Ferrer was probably a little tired from the turnaround from Barcelona. Still, a great win for PHM. PHM had easily beat Ferrer in their only previous meeting, so I thought he had a good shot. He now has a good draw to make the 4th round against Roger.

after the way Verdasco destroyed Ferru at Monte Carlo, there can be only 1 conclusion:

Ferru is inconsistent. he had no business losing to Mathieu on dirt.

That's 4 years straight Ferrer has gone out first match in Rome, and 3rd in a row he loses to Nadal in Barca just before.

Of course, when the schedule is a repeated problem every year, you'd think he'd be more careful to avoid three setters (eg vs Potato and Kuku in the early Barcelona rounds, not helpful).

Well done to Paulo, he needs a decent result here. Not a big deal for Ferrer, as it was his 3rd week playing in a row.

Poor PHM now plays Zverev after the Gonzo/tipsy match, which could finish in 60-90 minutes or so. I wonder how fast they push them out the door, supposed to be "suitable rest" but schedule is quite tight now, need to take advantage of a non-rain day.
