Lol, I stopped watching with Safin 4-1 in the second, and I think he had a ball for 5-1 but not sure.

Quality last game there. Safin just gave up, slapping every ball as hard as possible like some whiny 14yr old. On match point he didn't even bother making any movement for Robredo's (midpace) serve. That's really shoddy, have some class ffs.

He should retire now, this is worse than any normal decline of an old champion.

Wrong. The * next to the 4 means Safin was serving.

Damnit Marat.

Even with these monumental meltdowns Safin looks like he cares more than a lot of players on tour of late. And his ranking is higher than it's been in a long time. (Yeah, Wimbledon's around the corner...) If he can win one of these matches it'll do him a world of good.

Don't worry, not as good as the Lapentti one by a long shot. Lapentti's more fun to watch than Robredo and that match was more dramatic with a lot more extreme shifts. (Safin's ace-change of sides-double fault in the tiebreak of that one can't be improved on.)

In this one, Safin was annoyed as hell with the talking and shiftless moving of the spectators. Koening and Goodall pointed out that he'd given them plenty of talking points.

safin need to stop proving to people that he's a choker. we know you are well capable of this. you don't have to prove it anymore. seriously, i hate choker. if you're in control of the match, why can't you keep it up when your opponent look down?

One could think that a two time GS- champion whose career has been downhill for several years and who has already decided to quit after the season would be relatively free of the kind of mental issues that cause chokes like this. But no.

choking a 6-2 4-1 lead? and to someone like Robredo who just sucks? :o

Remember Robredo is the same guy who is 0-2 vs. Roddick on clay, and 0-10 vs. Roddick overall. :help: :o If you can't beat Roddick at least once in your career, you shouldn't be allowed in the top 20

Really this is an embarrassing loss for Safin.

^^^

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if that mischievous critter, Tursunov, is present in Rome, in spirit. Perhaps he bet Marat a couple of rounds of beer that he couldn't possibly lose 3 matches in a row from such a strong position. Marat goes ahead and does it...well, what does it matter if he wins or loses these days, given that he is retiring and all. Net result = night on the town at Tursunov's expense. Well, we're heading to Madrid next (?), so plenty of exotic locations... :aplot:
