This is the thread where we keep up to date with all that is new in the Super Mario world :D Post articles, clips and/or pictures as a way to report Ancic's progress throughout the year(s) Also, why not post your favourite news articles from the past?

From the archives, this (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/wimbledon/article451907.ece)is one of the most memorable articles for me (when Ancic beat Henman in Wimbledon 04 )

Two quotes particularly stand out:

Now, at the age of 20, Ancic has provided his country with a big fillip. If Croatia was suffering a collective hangover after the retirement of Goran Ivanisevic, Ancic has supplied the hair of the dog.

And this very touching: :awww:

“I remember when Goran won Wimbledon and watching it on television,” he said. “Half of Croatia cried. We were all nervous and cheering him on. It was remarkable. The whole town was silent, nobody was working and it was the biggest thing of the day. Goran is an ambassador for our country, not just tennis. When I was 15 he told me to keep improving the volley and keep going to the net. When I was 12 he told me to keep breaking rackets.”

 It seems he never took the racquet breaking advice seriously. The volleys OTOH :hearts:

And I'm kinda glad he didn't :p

And I'm kinda glad he didn't :p

I don't particularly mind it if it helps them vent the frustration and move on, but Goran managed to take it a step further by having to default a match because he had none left once :rolls:

Speaking of Mario's interviews, I loved the ones during last year's Wimbledon, when he was talking about how at one point he thought he'd never play again and how much playing on Center Court again meant to him. I'll try to find some quotes.

I agree, but at the same time racquet throwing is addictive. Just go ask Safin :p

Yay!!! :bounce: :bounce: would love to see those quotes. I actually remember seeing a video on that, I'll see if I can find it :D

EDIT: Can't find it :sobbing: I think youtube has removed it :awww:

The easiest to find was the post-match interview after the win over Ferrer
http://2008.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/interviews/2008-06-27/200806271214606248031.html

I was going through a rough time for a year. Always when I was ‑‑ many times I tried to come back, and always
in my mind was to play Centre Court at Wimbledon. That was what was always motivating me, to play big matches like
this in a big stadiums. That's what I work for, and that was what was pushing me in this tough year, to come ‑‑
to be able to go through all that. So that was going through my mind.

I remember, I mean, last year I was at this time running intervals, spending time in gym, doing everything I could to be fit again.
You know, I realized how much I missed it last year, Wimbledon.

Of course it was not easy for me. But to come out today and play this great match, I think, with a top five player
and to win on Centre Court, you know, it was a big moment for me.

I mean, I had great memories here in Wimbledon, and this is going to be one of them for sure.

Q. At the end, you kneeled down and kissed the grass. Why?

MARIO ANCIC: Just because of that. It was a flashback from everything what was going on in my head, what was going on in
‑‑ like I said, in this year that I was not able to play.

It just, you know, was almost like saying, Here I am back again. Thanks. I love this court at Wimbledon.
It means so much to me.

But there was a better one for some British newspapers or something like that.

Edit: Dont' know why it won't wrap the text to some normal width, had to break down lines to fit the screen

Dini
04-27-2009, 05:59 PM
Thanks for that :yeah:

The bit where he says Wimbledon was his motivation was great :worship: it just highlights how much that means to him,
and I think his answer to the second question highlights the passion he has for this tournament and the memories he
so much treasures from his matches there:

It just, you know, was almost like saying, Here I am back again. Thanks. I love this court at Wimbledon. It means so much to me.

:awww: That in a nutshell is why I love him so much. He works really hard despite all the obstacles in his way and yet still manages to come back strong.

Good semi-official news for all those eager to see Mario back.

http://www.zutaloptica.com/karika-koja-ne-nedostaje#komentari

The doctors have given him the green light to start playing again. It's not specified when he should be back, but presumably with the start of the next season. They just mention him playing DC next year.

Mario Ancic breaks up with his girlfriend
Croatian Times

Croatian tennis ace Mario Ancic has ended his relationship with his long-standing girlfriend Dolores Goles.

Ancic, 25, revealed the news to the weekly Gloria.

When asked whether he was thinking about marriage, he promptly said "No way". Asked how his girlfriend had handled their long-distance relationship, Ancic said he had nothing else to say about that topic.

Mario and Doris, 23, who lives in Split, were together for more than three years.

The end of the relationship is not the only news from Ancic. He has had his hair cut, losing the black curls that had thrilled many girls.

Ancic, whose career has been interrupted by injuries over the last two years, said his main wish was to get well and to return to tennis in great style.

Ancic, who has had mononucleosis and thyroid problems, told the weekly he had had his last medical examination at a clinic at Harvard University in September.

The results, he said, showed he was completely healthy

Some news on Mario from http://www.tennistalk.com/en/news/20091222/Ancic_hoping_seventh_return_to_tennis_sticks

Hard-luck Croat Mario Ancic is desperately working for another comeback after several years of battling glandular fever, training over the holiday period with his coach in the heartland of Swedish tennis, Vaxjo.

Since 2007, it's been a struggle with his health rather than ATP opponents for the legally-trained Ancic, 25 and now ranked 95th in the world. His illness returned six times to thwart his efforts of returning full-time to the circuit.

And Ancic is concerned only about taking baby steps to get himself back into the game. “I don't even want to consider a return to the Top 10," said the one-time No. 7. "The most important thing is to start to roll now.”

Ancic is pointing towards a possible Davis Cup appearance for the March tie against Ecuador, followed by the winner from Serbia and the US.

“I'm in Sweden, preparing for a new start,” says Ancic, who spoke with Magnus Norman, a former hip surgery subject and a former player familiar with comeback efforts.

"He told me that the most important thing is to start playing as soon as possible and play as much as possible”, said Ancic.

Hopefully he takes Norman's advice and we see him in a bunch of tournaments :D

I know he played two very good sets against a red-hot Soderling in Wimby R1 last year as I watched it live from court 1. :p He won the first set and lost the second after Soderling just raised his level a notch. His results have been nothing to speak of, but he still seems to put in solid performances against some of the higher quality opponents.

Could prove to be a tricky encounter but I have faith in Mario. Ajmo! :rocker2:

Here you go, I only left out most of the questions/introductory comments

"It was a tight match, two very difficult sets. I think I played very good, I had a lot more chances than he, but unfortunately, the time I spent away from tennis left a mark. It is difficult to say that I'm disappointed. Of course, I want to win the match, but four months ago I lived for merely hitting the ball a few times. Now, I'm back on court. From tournament to tournament I'm playing better and better and it makes me very happy. What is probably most important is that I feel good and healthy. Regardless how tough the match was, I had the feeling that I would have no problems if it went to the 3rd set."

"I have to be somewhat disappointed knowing how many times in the past I went through these situations, when I could have won duels with some more matches in my feet. But you can't simply make up for the time after a break overnight, everything must be passed all over again. This is all going through school again, I need all these situations, it's a process. I need more matches to be able to use opportunities when I have them in a match. That was the difference against Muller."

Mario's game against Muller was much better compared to his first three matches this season. "In Heillbronn, I had no idea what I was doing on court. It was all so fast and foreign. In second tournament, it was already better. This was the best match since my return. The most important thing is to keep raising my game week after week. Wins will come, it just needs patience."

What is the greatest difference compared to the time before the illness? What elements need to be raised on a higher level?

"My reactions are late and I'm slower in seeing the ball than usual. Then, there is control in a point -- when to attack and come to the net and when not to and play a longer rally. All of these are situations that have nothing to do with training, but with playing matches. These are the things that used to come automatically and I never thought about it, but now I have to again come to this automatic process."

"Playing doubles with Zovko helps me a lot. You simply get that feeling that you're in a tournament. I need a lot of matches now, either in singles or doubles, it helps a lot."

After Belgrade, Mario will play a futures in Texas, use protected ranking to play IW and he received a WC for Miami.

oranges
02-22-2010, 03:02 PM
It wasn't mentioned lately, but he said before that he doesn't plan to play the first round. I'm not entirely sure why such a decision. I mean I understand if he doesn't feel up to playing singles rubbers, but Prpic would probably stick with Marin and Ivo for singles in that case anyway. Just playing doubles with Lovro would be a boost to us IMO. Even if not, it's not crucial, but he always enjoyed DC so much that I'd think just being on the team would do him good. Perhaps he has some plans tournament/training-wise, the media here isn't very informative most of the time when it comes to details like that.

Brownie
02-22-2010, 03:43 PM

Oh, those pics were :hearts: Makes me want to put it in the avatar in absence of new ones.

That's probably it, if he was already set to play that futures, traveling back and forth two times in a short time would jet leg him for a month  But like I said, he said a couple of months ago already that he'd skip the first round and I doubt he planned the futures that far ahead, was probably going to see how his form develops. Either way, if all goes well finally, we might see Marin-Mario action in quarters :D

A report of the match from GM:

I was there today, it was soooo awesome to see him win. That first set, Smitty and I were trying to 'find the positives' then all of sudden he broke in the second and we looked at each other and said 'can he go three?'. We thought he was just out of shape and rusty, but he just needed a little bit of time to get going and get a feel for his strokes. It might also help that Reynolds is also coming back from a layoff, but Mario kept firing himself up even when he was a set and a break down. He never gave up and it paid off. It reminded me of his match two years ago on that same court against Gonzo.

At the end of the match he did a very brief interview on court and thanked his coach and manager for sticking with him all this time. He also said he got sick and stopped playing one year ago at this event and to win a match there today meant a lot to him. He thanked everyone in the crowd who supported him.

I spoke to him after that. He remembered me (sort of, he may have thought I was someone else) from two years ago and gave me a big smile (then a hug and a photo a few minutes later). He was very lovely, and he signed things and took photos with fans while he waited for the golf cart to come get him. He's kind of cute the way he kind of shyly speaks to people, but he was very patient with all the requests he got.

I'm so happy to see him get a win, I hope he can stay healthy and get stronger and really get back in the mix again. It's like having Taylor back, these guys just add a little bit of variety to the whole game and it's good for us as fans.

It was indeed great to see him on TV again after so long. Obviously I would have liked him to win, but I really don't care that much. It was cool to see his first and third round matches there, in person. Shame I couldn't make the second round match, but I can't be in two places at once, I haven't figured out how to clone myself just yet.

I also saw the end of the doubles match, didn't even know they switched the court until I saw the score on the big screen during a changeover in the Stadium while watching Fed's match. Fed was looking at me when I RAN up the stairs and out at 6-5 in the second set (yes, I had close seats in the stadium, sitting almost right across from his chair).

With a few more matches he'll play him self into form. Just hope he gets some luck with the draws and enough match fitness to peak for the grass court season.

I guess we just keep checking the entry lists, that's all I can think of. Unless he comes on here and tells us himself.

Edit: I am looking at the photos I took of him in IW, he's so darn cute!

smitty8
03-28-2010, 04:35 AM
Well, he can ask for some WC or use the PR for these larger tourneys or keep on playing Challengers and Futures to get more match time and hopefully keep gaining points. I think he needs some more match time, gain more confidence for these larger tourneys.

Dini

I think right now challengers is the way to go. Get as many matches as possible and work your way into form.

We can always count on him putting up a fight even if things aren't going well.

He said in an interview that all matches help him get into form, IIRC he even played with his brother in Texas futures. I suspect he'll be playing them often at least until he feels he's got enough match practice.
