Who in your opinion is fitter? Nadal or Federer?

2003

It would be better to take Federer in his prime say 2006, and well just take Nadal over the 2008-2009 season - (so far) as this is close to his prime.

It's an interesting comparison. Nadal has a more muscular body where as Fed has a more sort of leaner david hasslehoff style look (complete with the chest hair and all!). People say Fed has a gut at times but personally I have never seen it myself.

In terms of pure endurance and physical fitness prime Fed was amazing, he could go through rally after rally and not even look like hes panting at all. He also frequently made it all the way from A/O to Masters cup and peaked there without being tired at all.

Nadal is interesting too. He has a great body IMO. We all know about his massive biceps and he would obviously beat Federer in an armwrestle or street fight but thats more genetics than anything else. Federer is very strong in the forearm wrist though and thats what matters most, I dont see how big biceps help a tennis player that much. Rafa always gets tired, you would never see Federer with his hands on his knees at USOPEN, however Rafa fights till the absolute end as we saw in Wimbledon and particularly in A/O semi/and final. That took major guts to play 10 sets of tennis like that in 2 days with the draw and schedulling against him despite being world no 1.

Overall I think Fed had more stamina but Rafa made up for it by fighting with every last ounce all the way till the end, every point, on serve or off serve. He wont leave the court with anything left in the tank if nessacary.

Does anyone know what these 2 do outside tennis to stay in such great shape? Do they run or cycle or is the endurance cardio solidly from tennis, practice or championship games?

They would obviouisly work in the gym on core work and particularly Rafa would obviously (I HOPE) be doing strengthening for his tendinitis issues. Tape aint going to fix that one.

What does everyone else think? Personally I think these 2 are the fittest on tour. Murray is not far behind although he used to be a slab. I'm not sure how Murray training with track training though has much practical application to a tennis match as say shuttle running, but it certainly made Murray a lot fitter. He will need to be over the next few years.

Nadal is more powerful no doubt about it, but when it comes to fitness, I've never seen Federer spent on his knees, while I've seen Nadal on his knees several times after very long points, never did I ever see Federer stalling to catch his breath no matter how long the point was, points like that famous rally with Hewitt in IW comes to mind, where he laughed and returned to the baseline while Hewitt remained on the ground for a while, even though Federer ran much more in that point.

so yeah Federer is the fitter player.

Obviously Blanka, he has to be the way he plays. He uses way more energy then Roger. Only Muster could keep up with Blanka. He had a resting pulse of 27 beats/min.

Blanka cos hes a talentless mug who relies on brute stregth. Fed is Ken, relies on a combination of stregth and talent. Trust me i played with Ken and i fucked everyone up, epecially Blanka the mug. I uppercutted him to pieces. He would do that fast roll and with clinical timing i would uppercut him while he was in the air and take half his power away. I was way to cunning and talented for that moron mug.

Sure? Federer has a bigger serve, a faster forehand (arguably), faster backhand.

Stronger doesn't mean more powerful. It's a combination of technique and strength to attain power.

By the same token, speed doesn't = power either. There is more weight on Nadal's shots even if they reach their destination slower.

why so angry, chill dawg! the important thing is rafa wins, thats what matters to his fans. brute strength is the modern day way, win ugly is the modern day, its smart tactics, u win at all costs! winners are remembered, losers are fogotten! rafa is a winner! but i guess since rafa is a talentless mug and has a 13-6 winning record against federer, i guess federer isnt as talented as we all thought. surely a more talented player cannot possibly lose to a talentless mug that many time, its impossible!

Lol no worries i just felt like saying that. I know Blanka isnt as talentless at people think. The winning record seems a lot better thne it really is though. It was mostly on clay and Roger lost many close ones. More mportantly Roger is 13-6 against Blanka in slams

Federer in his prime perserved energy, i.e. you rarely saw him so much as break sweat because his game is so efficient, in fact when you watch federer move on the court he takes shuffling steps which makes him look like he's gliding and not running. It's actually physically difficult to perserve energy like that because a lot of fitness training goes into it,

Rafa on the other hand is like a heavy weight boxer, he'll slug it with you game for game, set for set and has out of this world endurance

I guess I never thought about it that way.

Will be interesting if he still plays the same way when hes Feds age. Maybe the shuffling steps have helped Fed not have to change his game too much as he ages?

^ erm well nadals shots require alot more muscle and work than federers, that way nadal plays wears his body down and makes him very tired, this being so federers strokes are alot more effortless and smooth, requiring less energy.
I still think nadal is fitter and because of his game he is susceptible to more injuries as a result of the way he plays.
