He played well, better than MC.
Some beautiful shots from him and Davy. He serves better by the way.
He should win tomorrow, no ? :)

Bit of a strange match, Davy played very well for 4 or 5 games at the start of the first, missed his chances and saw Rafa break ahead, then got discouraged. It was all Rafa till about 3-1 up in the 2nd when HE started playing like a bit of a clown and the rest of the set was more of a struggle than the scoreboard would indicate.
Overall, not bad from Nadal but far from spectacular. I think he's raised his game a notch from Monte Carlo, but he still has several levels to go in order to peak in time for Roland Garros, his groundstrokes were routinely falling very short and his serve has been completely MIA for weeks

Could have been interesting if Davy somehow took a bp.... course, he's barely done that since his return. Also needs to stop getting down on himself after failing to convert - both sets he threw away his serve immediately after.

Starace-6-4 6-2

it will be just like their Rome Masters final in 2007. Clay Monsta steamrolled him 2 and 2 in that one.

it could be 3 and 3 or 3 and 2 this time. Gonzo is dead meat and he knows it.

Don't feel bad Crazy Girl, Davydenko is the player that best plays against Rafa on clay, on a quicker clay surface, Denko has as good a shot as anyone.

It was a high quality match. It was a competitive match but as usual Nadal was too good on the bigger points and he is truly invincible on clay.

It won't impact on him yet, as he is that far ahead of anyone else on the clay. It's just when he loses that little bit of speed across the court, that will become more of a factor and this isn't happening at the moment.

Already been established that Nadal this year is hitting the forehand with less net clearance, he's keeping it flat so it becomes instinct when the US Open arrives, US Open is the main focus of this year even if the reduced topspin causes unforced errors on clay, Roland Garros isn't the focus this year:D

^^ Mate, are you arguing that Stepanek is a better player as compared to Davydenko? I don't agree with that.

Davydenko has achieved a lot more than what Stepanek has achieved so far (for example slam semi finalist on many occasions, ranked in the top 4, etc.)

If we are just talking about Volleying abilites, then yes Stepanek is the better volleyer. In most other areas Davydenko is the better player by far (he is one of the finest and cleanest ball strikers in today's game).

Everyone disagrees a little bit about Rafa's level of play in this match. IMO, since Miami, this is the best that he's played. I think his game has slowly come back around from the "horrible disaster" that it was in Miami. I thought he played real well today. Pretty aggressive (relative to the clay), and one big thing I noticed is that his slice was incredible. It obviously has been improving over the past couple years, but it always looked a little mechanical to me. Today it looked like an actual slice, very low, deep, and spinny. Awesome! It won't help him much on the hard courts, but it could be amazing for him at Wimbledon. He could've served a little better today, but it was windy, so meh.

He'll win comfortably tomorrow, maybe 6-2 6-1 or so.

Yeah he didn't serve perfect but he hasn't been broken in this entire tournament so it isn't bad and he comes up with the serves he needs on breakpoints which really points to his serve being capable of a high level when he's challenged (and thats all that matters).

Yeah I've got a good brain so when I don't use it for my school I use it here and I'm not doing schoolwork for the last 3 days so I posted more in these 3 days than ever before, but usually I'll post a lot less because of the schoolwork. Tomoro I have maximum schoolwork to do so I won't post much.

Awesome! Isn't the expression "an amazing tragedy"? Anyway, I agree, the slice was what made what could have been an epic struggle into a pretty routine victory for Rafa. He barely hit it anything less than terrific all match and frustrated Denko to no end with it as he continually had to create all the pace and angle off his own racquet in tough conditions. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it in play at Wimby
