I HAVE AN AVVY AGAIN!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Deboogle!.
09-28-2006, 03:23 PM
:woohoo: I think the coolest part of the upgrade is the edit post function! can also upload pics from URLs now :D

Oh plus you can quote multiple posts at once with that quote marks looking thing at the bottom right of each post

09-28-2006, 03:37 PM
oh that is right. I had forgotten that. Did you watch the season premiere? Is it worth getting into this season?

Yup. Nip/Tuck is always worth it. ;)
Seriously though, this show never gets boring and never uses any repetitive storylines like a lot of other shows seem to be doing lol.

Whoa I'm blasted by the blue! I'm still getting used to this new layout. :)

acoffeygirl
09-28-2006, 03:39 PM
Did the different layouts (or whatever they different color schemes are called) go away with the upgrade?

Also...I need to renew my membership and for the life of me, I can not figure out where to do it. I received an email about it expiring, but the link given doesn't work. I'm sure it is somewhere simple, and I'm just being a dork but I can't seem to find it. Help anyone???

Now I remember why I don't watch much TV...
That good, huh? Guess it's a must-skip for us then.

"Lost" had a special on last night that gave us a condensed version of what happened in the past two seasons, which I thought was great because I missed several episodes and then after a while I got lost (heh.) and gave up watching. Now when the new season starts I won't be so clueless about the storyline.

Why?

Well I'm taking too many difficult classes this semester so I'm having trouble handling the stress. Yesterday we took an Honors Physics test that I had spent time studying for but did terrible on. Worse than I've done on a test before...I have a 4.0 and I'm scared to death that I'm going to lose it. It's sounds so pathetic...but it like affects my whole future with what college I'm going to and everything. Usually I don't have a problem with any subjects and I can do well on everything with little or no work. I've never struggled so much, it makes me feel stupid.

It's so trivial...sorry I brought it up! I hate stress lol...I just feel like I'm not good at anything but getting A's. That's what I'm supposed to be good at...but now I can't even do that anymore...

Thanks for listening Deb, haha

Well, it just so happens that I have lots of experience with this lol, and a lot of strong opinions to boot ;). I learned in my first semester of college that grades don't really mean anything. I went to college never having seen a B. Didn't know what the letter meant, didn't even have to work that hard and graduated at the top of my class. So I go to college with the mentality that if I work as hard as I can I will do well, then proceeded to bag 2 Cs my first semester after working my frigging ass off. I was so bummed, but then I woke up the next day and everything was the same. My parents still worshipped me, my friends were still my friends, and I was no less smart than I was the day before. My best friend even made it through college never seeing a bad grade, and I told her all the time that she'd be better off getting a bad grade because it can really help you improve your outlook. To this day, she doesn't get it, and she worries so much, it's just such a waste of all her energy.

When you put that kind of pressure on it like "it affects my whole future how I do in this class," it can be absolutely crippling. You can't live your life that way. If you were doing well enough to get into a good college before, one bad grade won't keep you from getting in. All you can do is the best you can. If you don't get a good grade on an exam or whatever, all you can do is make sure you have done whatever is in your own power so that you can sleep at night knowing you did everything you possibly could.

As I told Nat the other day, every moment you spend worrying/upset/stressing is a moment you spend away from relaxing or studying or talking to a teacher to find out how you can improve, etc.

It's my personal opinion that far too much weight is put on "prestige" of a school - I went to a top 20, elite research university, and I am at the same law school as people who went to Long Beach State or whatever. Who cares? If you go to a semi-decent school and are in the honors program and do really well, chances are good you'll get just as good an education as you would at Harvard (or perhaps even better.). Just like everything else in life, you get out of a school what you put into it. It's easy to get caught up in an elitist mentality because when you do well, that's what all the people around you reinforce to you. People looked at me like I had 5 eyes when I said I wasn't applying to Harvard "but you're #1 in your class!" "but your father went there!" I didn't want to go there, end of. I wasn't gonna make myself miserable in a place where i'd be unhappy just b/c other people thought it was more prestigious. I live for myself, not for all of them. The name on the school meant nothing to me if I was gonna be unhappy. I'm lucky that I found a school that is pretty prestigious while at the same time really fitting my personality. I know a lot of people who aren't as lucky but if I had to make the choice, I'd pick happiness over prestige any day.

I think it's very damaging what's happened to high school kids these days. This idea of when you're 16 or 17 and a couple bad exams can affect your future is way too much for any kid to have to bear and it makes me sick to my stomach that you guys have to worry about this stuff. Grades are so random and artificial and arbitrary. And the fact that not doing well in a class or two is making you upset is not a reflection on you but on what society has done to kids, and if you couldn't tell already, it really PISSES ME THE F OFF.

Anyway, try not to worry about it. Do the best you can and find the colleges that will be right for YOU. Do you really even WANT to go to a place that doesn't want you if you have one bad grade????

Ah but I am not your mother;) Don't think I would mind though
And yes it was at least a decade ago that MIT had this epidemic of freshman suicides. The other night at Rosh Hashanah when I went to my neighbor's to have dessert and drinks, we were discussing the schools here. I love the fct that the kids at least in middle school are not overloaded with homework and the place so supportive and friendly for the kids. My friends have a son who just started high school and they were lamenting how few kids from the HS go to Ivy League schools. Now mind you they have had their son in 3 different schools. Anyway I mentioned Nate was interested in going to his dad's alma mater Univ of Wash for the engineering school. It is tough to get in and he would need to be a resident. These folks were like why doesn't he try MIT? My reply- why does he need the stress of that. Life is stressful enough. I opted to not go to an Ivy School and I still got into med school, never felt stressed, had wonderful training and I am happy. I want him to be happy. He will do great no matter where he goes. They thought I was selling Nate short. That pissed me off as well;)

My grandfather was a high school principal. It was somewhat sad that only at his memorial service did we really get a picture of how forward-thinking he had been as an educator. For about a decade in the 1960s-70s he ran a school without grading. It was ultimately brought down by some neurotic parents, who could not handle the absence of an "A" to show them that their student was the best and would succeed in life.

I taught briefly in an elementary school, and those poor teachers were just sweating trying to get the kids to pass the standardized tests. They felt there was no time for real experiential learning.

Even in college, I hate the grading system, partly because there is so much grade inflation that grades are largely meaningless, partly because music is a difficult discipline to evaluate with scores, and partly (unfortunately) because too many students these days have no ethical qualms about cheating and care only about the grade on their transcript.

Society sucks :hug: but that's the point. It never ends. It's high school getting into college, it's college getting into grad school. It's grad school getting a job. It's all the same, except that in high school you're even younger and less-equipped to handle the stress. And my point was that what constitutes a "good" college is very subjective, and you should be worried about what YOU consider a good college, not what US News and World Report or your guidance counselor or whoever else considers a good college. What is a good college for others might not be good for you, and if it's not good for you, that should be all that matters. :)

I see what you're saying. The college that is right for me isn't necessarily the one that society considers a "good college." Like, I can probably get the job I want without having had a perfect record in everything. My biggest advice in deciding on what college to go to is VISIT VISIT VISIT. Go to schools, take tours, STAY OVERNIGHT to see what life is like there, ask questions - not of the people who volunteer to give you a tour or host you overnight (b/c chances are good they wouldn't volunteer if they were miserable), but the people in the classes you sit in on, the people you see sitting on benches, whatever. IMO that is really the only way to know if you will like a school or not.

I knew I was gonna go to law school but what can you do with any non-engineering degree? You can go to grad school and teach, you can go into government and research, go into your own business, journalism/media, etc. There aren't that many degrees that let you be successful in right out of college anymore ;)

Good point, which makes the selection even more difficult. What kind of skills to you need to succeed in law school? Sorry for all the questions...

At the moment I'm thinking Journalism/English...

At the moment I'm thinking Journalism/English...Of all the grad schools, law is probably the least demanding in terms of a particular skill set. You can major in anything and go to grad school (in fact people in law school who have science/engineering degrees are in high demand right now). To do well in law school you have to be a good writer (but of the particular legal style of writing), logic helps.... just sort of an overall intelligent person who picks things up quickly, is good at memorizing, etc. It's a lot of analysis and comparing and contrasting and whatnot.

Wow, that actually kind of sounds like me. I never even thought about that before. :eek:A lot of people just sort of think of law as the criminal lawyers - prosecutors, defense attorneys, etc. There are lots of different kind of law :) I'm not gonna try to convince you to think about law because it's one of those things that's definitely not for everyone. Then you have someone like my best friend who majored in history, applied to law school, thought that was what she wanted to do, then did something called Teach for America for 2 years and is now getting her masters in public policy and will most likely go into gov't research. like i said it's all about the open mind. :)

But, if you are easily stressed and if grades are a mental hurdle for you, law school is probably not a good idea. You're graded on a curve at most schools, so your grade depends on how everyone else does around you. Moreover, in most classes, you have one exam at the end of the semester and that one exam is your grade for the WHOLE CLASS :scared:Deb you were a Chemistry major??? OMC. No I'm not ordinarily stressed because usually the grades just happen for me without too much effort, except maybe in physics lol. Oh that does sound gross though :scared:! lol...maybe if I go to a crappy school and everyone there is bad I'll always have good grades

JLee, you have a lot on your plate, but don't worry and stress about school so much! Life is so much more than that.

I've basically experienced what Deb had experienced...that college grade shock in my freshman year. Everything came so easily to me in high school and I got great grades but I got caught up in that whole "omg what college are you going to!!" herd mentality because my high school was so competitive. I got into Berkeley, my parents were proud, my friends ecstatic, and I thought that I "just got it". Then came college and I got a C in math, for both semesters of that first year. What had been my strongest subject had just become the weakest link on my college transcript and became something I was utterly disgusted with...and yeah it didn't feel great, but ya know what? It was probably the best thing that happened to me in my academic career. I felt like I no longer needed to perform at an extremely high level to validate myself and to others. Not to my parents, not to my friends, and not to my teachers. Not that I didn't want to do well, but I knew some things were just out of my hands so why push myself beyond what I am capable of to the point of insanity?! So yeah, at that point I just pretty much said "fuck it" and while Deb just tried to do her personal best I just started to slack off, had a "whatever" attitude, and my grades dropped :p (something you shouldn't do ;)). So yeah, don't follow me...I'm a bad student. ;) But the basic idea behind all this is the same, don't stress over a little ink mark on some paper. :)

As for your career goals, interests, majors, and all that good stuff, I think I'm a good example of how you shouldn't worry about not having an idea of what you're going to do or what you wanna be. I was an architecture major, and while most people switch majors by their 3rd year, it wasn't until in my 3rd and 4th years that I decided it was not for me. It was too late to change majors then but I graduated with a degree in arch anyway and now I'm pursuing something completely different and I have no qualms about it nor I do have any regrets about what I studied in college. :) So please don't get caught up in that whirlwind of grades/SATs/APs/Ivy League, it's seriously bad for your health.:hug: My parents sometiomes still tease me about changing career paths but I play mindgames with them and brainwash them...and now they're a believer. ;)

You can't ask for more out of yourself than your personal best (just don't slack off like I did;)) and you'll be successful no matter what. :)

Good goddess, I finally caught up on reading all the posts since MTF went down last night!!!!!!!!! :yippee:

Could someone please explain to me why so many people think I'm a guy (despite the fact that my effing profile says 'happily married woman')? WHAT THE HELL?

The fact that you are "une fée" always made you a bit feminine in my eyes. ;)

Anyone see the movie The Devil Wears Prada? Well Ugly Betty was like the same exact thing. I think some of the lines were EXACTLY the same. But I'll probably keep watching it because I have nothing better to do, lol.

I burned my hand in physics today.
I'm probably going to get killed before the end of the year.

The end. :)

Oh, everything happens to me in physics!
We did an experience and the flame was too high (I BLAME THE TEACHER) and I was convinced it was about to kill the guy I was working with so I tried to take the little pot we were working with out of the flame and it obviously fell and the teacher was like THAT POT IS 600$ so I had the great idea to try and catch it. Keep in mind the pot was like inside the flame 5 seconds ago.

On the bright side, the pot never broke.

please promise me you'll quit science and go into like....literature or something.

well let me know:p

JIAT HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!

haha yes!! How fun.

By the way, have you heard anything about the premium membership? Steve posted a few days ago that it was somewhat on hold while they did the upgrade. It isn't a big deal. Mine runs out today so I was just wondering.

And I feel silly for asking this in the bug thread, but what is the index page they are referring to?

Deboogle!.
09-29-2006, 03:35 PM
Nope no clue, bug forum is the place to look for that.

Love the av Deb ;)

I tried the sour cherry juice, and I have to say NEVER again!! Unless you like straight cranberry juice I wouldn't recommend it. Definitely wouldn't say it tasted like cherries at all!! Maybe mixing it with something will help, because I hate to just throw it away.

My college has a room called "Ping pong" but it only contains Macs, no table tennis. ): I'd still rather they'd have called it the table tennis room, even if they weren't talking about the game (because that's how it's should be called here!.).

I could have a huge headstart and I'd be beaten at "ping pong" but put me on the lawns and I'll beat your sorry asshat. d: I like the purest form of tennis. (:

Ooh, this new sentence in edit profile made me laugh. Please contact the Administrator if your date of birth has changed. Only thing is now I'm stuck being born in 2004. ): Oh well, it is the year of my MTF birth, so it's like when I was reborn. |:

Anyway I've not been posting here lately for some reason, hope everyone is doing well. *returns to lurking*

A smoker has more good matches.
