I can't understand why you don't like Monaco? Is it because of the elitism and hypocrisy that define the principality? Well, that certainly annoys me as well, but it's such a beautiful place. :inlove:

Herdwick
04-10-2009, 01:19 PM
I loathe it and I don't think it's beautiful. The location is stunning but the place is devoid of anything of architectural interest or character. It's well nigh impossible to walk anywhere, it's totally artificial, grossly overpriced and populated by people of whom the kindest description I can muster is that of 'international riff-raff'. Same sort of people who live in Dubai in short.

That the tennis community to some extent identifies with, and patronises, such places is, to my mind, one of its biggest failings...

No taxes :p But seriously - I do hear what Herdwick is saying, and I sympathise and agree to a certain extent, - but I can't deny a big fondness for MC. Apart from some very early trips to Roland Garros with family, it was the first "foreign" tournament I ever went to alone, and - bizarrely - the place where I first met my Argentine ex-boyfriend and we used to go there quite a lot  I took Alex there for his Birthday last year and he :inlove: it and wants to go back! OK, here comes clay season and MC...What to expect from Novak?
First, I hope that inevitable loss of #3 spot won't affect him at all. It's inevitable becouse I doubt that Murray can be as bad on clay as he was last year. And he doesn't have to do much better than last year and switch will happen, either in MC or in Rome.Novak knows that and he should be already over it in his head.If that's the case then nothing will change, it doesn't matter if you are #3 or #4 draw wise...
Second, weather and his endurance...sadly we need to take this into consideration in every outdoor tournament.Spring time in Europe should suit him and I expect no troubles in next period. He definitely has some problems and I can only imagine how hard is for him to concentrate on his game when he is affected by extreme heat or high humidity or both combined...Especially with is kind of a game.I saw some article long ago about his game and thin line that he walks on trying to find exactly right measure of patience and aggression, and it summed it up perfectly. If he's too passive guys like Tsonga will kill him, if he's too aggressive he can go into huge error fest like in that Cincy final last year when he had 30 UE in first set alone against Murray (and even then he lost that set in tiebreak...)...It's a different measure of both for each of his opponents and finding the right one is very hard when your body falters and your mind is filled with thoughts like "I am feeling sick...why again...I thought I solved this...should I ask for a medical help...can I endure this..." or whatever is crossing his mind when he should be focused on his game only, and he really needs perfect focus to execute his game right. And we all know what it looks like when he is able to do it.In that surge in second set in Miami final we saw his game is out there and that he is able to produce it.Murray really couldn't do nothing much but sadly it didn't last long, he lost his focus again and it was over...
So, if there are some outside stuff that occupies his mind and he isn't physically at 100% he needs to solve it and we'll see old Novak again. He has good clay record and I hope he can do something close to what he did last year. With Rafa around I doubt that he expects some titles so semifinals and finals could do wonders about his confidence going to RG and Wimbledon after that.

Nole's quarter: :help: Wonder if he can enter SF at all. 3rd round Almagro (2 clay titles this year, I think?) and QF Verdasco or Ferrer.......summed up as the craziest clay-courters besides Nadal :help: So I am not happy even if he's on Fed's half

Fed's quarter: can meet Gillou who leads him 2-0 in QF. But is Gillou good on clay?

Murray's quarter: a bunch of qualifiers. Much easier path that Nole :help: The erratic Nalby and just-out-of-injury Kolya can't do much...

Rafa's quarter: I don't even need to see his quarter. He'll win the tournament anyway. But Delpo-Rafa could be fun. (Delpo ALWAYS meet Rafa in QF, why?) Gael could be something to watch too

I considered him as a clay courter in this time last year. :p He has the games on clay but I can't expect him to beat Federer here in his recent form.

Well Nole is not a natural clay courter, so I think we shouldn't expect too much anyway as he tries to adjust his game to this surface  I guess he entered because he lives in MC anyway, and so it's a rare chance to play a tournament where he can stay in his own place instead of Hotels, - and if he loses early it's not like it's one of the Masters' Series events anymore, so it won't be so disastrous.

Yes you're right :) But I guess because it's not mandatory it's been a bit "downgraded" in some peoples' eyes. Guess that's what I was trying to say.

Used to be my favourite surface - back in the days when people like Coria and Gaudio played. I loved the fact that the smaller, less physically strong guys without big serves, could win through using clever play and brain rather than power. As you say - sadly Nadal has ruined that - can't imagine someone with a graceful, pretty clay game like Gaudio winning the French now :tears:

I remember Coria:)where he is now:confused:

He had shoulder surgery I believe, - and when he came back onto the Tour he had lost his nerve and had some real psychologocal problems, mainly as a result of that famous French Open final when he was two sets up against Gaudio and lost the match. He started serving endless double faults, and slipped right down the rankings. I believe he had some marital problems too  I think he's tried to make a few comebacks on the Challenger Circuit, but none very successfully, and now he seems just to do TV commentary back home in Argentina.

Nole needs this as he only has one 500 event so far this year. He needs 3 before USO. Since he's not playing Barcelona, he has to play MC. The remaining 2 500 events before USO are Hamburg which is a post Wimbledon outdoor clay and Washington which is right before the double header of 1000 events in Montreal and Cincy.

Honestly, I don't know if there's any good draw for Nole at all these days so I am happy with him playing Benneteau who's not really playing well this year. And I hope the qualifier Benneteau will play is not one of the clay court specilists. Almagro is hurt after winning Acapulco (and that's the only clay court title he has this year) Even he is recoverd, he's definitely not in shape. And I am grateful if he makes QF this year so I don't really care who he'll face.

I kind of have this feeling he'll play Hamburg  He has friends there I believe, and trained for a while in Germany. I sure hope so, as I have friends there too, so could be a nice (cheap :o ) weekend break for me :)

About the draw - I agree with you, and - for the qualifiers - I hope for no clay court specialists either. My real fear would be Lapentti  who irritates the hell out of me at the best of times, and is currently beating my beloved Mikhail Youzhny, Cuevas would be scary too.

Somehow I missed that Novak will also play doubles in MC - with Viktor. That will please Herdwick for sure, as they usually play doubles on outside courts where you can get much closer to the Court (:secret: and she can embarrass JP  ) Here is their quarter of the draw:-

[8] COETZEE, Jeff (RSA)/KERR, Jordan (AUS) vs BYE
MELO, Marcelo (BRA)/SA, Andre (BRA) vs DJOKOVIC, Novak (SRB)/TROICKI, Viktor (SRB)
LOPEZ, Feliciano (ESP)/VERDASCO, Fernando (ESP) vs ANDREEV, Igor (RUS)/SAFIN, Marat (RUS)
BYE vs [4] BHUPATHI, Mahesh (IND)/KNOWLES, Mark (BAH)

It is a hard first match, but I saw them play doubles together in Bercy last year, and they're fun to watch!

Here are Tignor's predictions for MC:

First Quarter

There’s another tennis ritual at this time of year, of course: The dominance of Rafael Nadal. Over the last four years, he’s lost a total of two matches in the lead-up to the French Open, while winning eight Masters events. Every spring we wonder if he can run the table again, and every year he comes out like a new man on clay, his recent losses forgotten, and does it again. Even those two losses, to Federer in Hamburg 2007 and Ferrero in Rome 2008, seemed fortuitous for his French Open aspirations.

There’s another element to Nadal’s dominance. He tends to use this time of year to avenge earlier hard-court losses and stop players from gaining any momentum against him. This year his quarter may afford him a chance to do this again. The top two seeds after Nadal are Juan-Martin del Potro and Gael Monfils, both of whom have beaten him in 2009. Those two are slotted to the play in the fourth round for the right to face Nadal in the quarters.

Other worthy names, but likely losers to Nadal: Hewitt, Monte Carlo resident Marat Safin, and Stepanek

Semifinalist: Nadal

Second Quarter

Andy Murray brings his 26-2 season record into Nadal’s half of the draw. With him are . . . well, not a whole lot. Davydenko, Nalbandian, and Cilic are the other three seeds here, and the only guy I can find who even remotely qualifies as a dangerous floater is Monte Carlo resident Tomas Berdych (he and Murray are 1-1, though they haven’t played since 2006).

Murray’s results on clay have been the biggest disappointment of his career so far—he trained on the stuff as a kid and has developed the patience and stamina for it in the last year. His draw in Monte Carlo gives him an excellent chance to get his clay legs underneath him and make some long-awaited strides on the surface.

Semifinalist: Murray

Third Quarter

This section is the province of the ever-more-unpredictable Monte Carlo resident and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic. He reached the semis last year, and while these days it’s hard to tell from week to week what kind of patience level he’ll bring to the court, he should benefit from the lack of intense heat and humidity, which staggered him in Indian Wells and Key Biscayne. Djokovic’s strongest competition will likely come from one of a mini-Spanish Armada: Verdasco, Ferrer, and Almagro are all in this quarter, and all could outlast or outhit Djokovic on a good day. While Verdasco is more comfortable on hard courts, Almagro had a solid start to the year on dirt, winning in Acapulco, and Ferrer beat the Serb on the stuff in Davis Cup last month.

Semifinalist: Ferrer

Fourth Quarter

The name-brand player who got hitched over the weekend was, of course, Roger Federer. It’s been a topsy-turvy year for Federer, both professionally and personally, but in taking an 11th-hour wild card into Monte Carlo he seems to have decided that the best place for him at the moment is on the tennis court. It's hard to argue: Judging by his total lack of consistency in the U.S. last month, the more balls he hits, the better.

His quarter is not a frightening one. He could be pitted in a third-rounder against his countryman Stan Wawrinka, provided Stan can get past Igor Andreev and his vicious clay-oriented forehand. After that, Federer’s most likely quarterfinal foes will be Simon or Robredo. It’s hard to say how the world No. 2’s form will be on clay right now. He’s had his ups and downs and his share of happy distractions so far in 2009. While his backhand remains a major question mark—Simon, who beat him in Toronto last summer, could make him hit a lot of them—Federer survived many a grinder over the last three clay springs. He has been the runner-up in Monte Carlo three straight times and hasn’t lost to anyone not named Nadal here since 2005.

Semifinalist: Federer

Semifinals: Nadal d. Murray; Ferrer d. Federer

Final: Nadal d. Ferrer

The KING Hernandez   I watched a bit of it too, - but I find that kind of typical clay court match quite boring these days :o so switched to watch Chela v Kunitsyn, because at least there is enough choking going on there to make it faintly amusing :o I sure hope Nole doesn't underestimate Hernandez - as you say, he is solid and dependable, and he is right at home on clay.

"So far so good," said the Serb Monday. "I didn't have a long time to adjust to new surface and conditions.

 It's not amusing when your heart stops every 8 seconds :tears:

Is Hernandez a dangerous opponent for Novak:unsure:

Well - he's a solid clay courter, so I guess that probably means yes  Obviously he's not in the league of the top clay guys ike Ferrer, Robredo, Almagro etc - but he works hard, he moves well, he seems to have a pretty calm temperament under pressure, and he can hit balls all day that will probably bore Nole to  I hope Nole can focus and not get stressed by his style, and just take his chances.

Depends on how long the preceeding matches take  But if you calculate two hours for each match, plus 15 minutes between each one to change court staff etc, I would think about 4.00pm CET - but may be up to an hour later if preceeding matches drag on as clay court matches sometimes do.
