Do you want to jet Marat as one of your favorites, but can't turn your eyes from that car-crash of a match because of the dim light in the back of your mind that was the 2000 US Open?

Well, then welcome to Hipponymous, where you can vent as you struggle with the phenomenon that is the Hippo.

No one will be denied the chance to speak, no matter your age, race, sex, poster rep or mental state.

Hello, fellow Hippononymites :wavey:

I've been very Hippononymous this week. No Marat, no one to cheer for. I'm not happy the Hippo's reputation is growing so dark. You can't read about him without it being about his tanking matches or not wanting to play the Olympics. Tennis-X headlined his loss in Sopot: "Marat takes the appearance fee and runs". I wondered if he called Myskina up on the line...

I really hope he doesn't put in the same misguided "effort" into playing the Olympics, although he said the Russian players will get paid for being there. All things shouldn't revolve around money--especially when it begins to damage your soul. I think if he doesn't want to be there, he should concentrate on preparing for the US Open, like Lleyton and Agassi. Go to Washington. I'm sure Mrs. Guga would love for him to be there.

Tennis-X speculates that he will tank his first or second match. I didn't hear that he was practicing at all in Athens, and he didn't walk the ceremony, while I hear Igor and Mikhail were wildy excited.

I want Marat to put in the effort. We'll be watching, anyway. :)

Tennis Fool
08-14-2004, 07:27 AM
Also, maybe "angry" isn't the right term for the thread. Anyway, about Sopot, I wasn't really angry. More perturbed. I don't want to become apathetic.

exact...angry isn't the right term...I don't know...maybe more frustrated, worried or disturbed ;)
anyway Hippononymous is the perfect term - you inspired my new signature :worship:

concerning Sopot I wasn't angry at all...But I saw yesterday the opening ceremony and I don't know why I was feeling uncomfortable.
They all were so happy to be there....But no Marat...and I don't think he was there
I have a bad feeling about Athens...(please Hippononymous help me)...as you said TF we didn't see him practising at all...it's hard to watch andy's or roger's training session pics....and no Marat
I have the feeling he wasn't even in Greece :hysteric:

BelgianWaffle

I saw Mikhail Youzhny and he was verrrrrrry excited ;)
Basically was the only one in the russian delegation not to wear that white hat so maybe that's why they showed him a lot lol

btw I don't really care that marat was not at the opening ceremony (although it was nice to see Federer for example, he seemed so happy :D ) but if there are no reports of him training, well...
doesn't look very good :o

Imagine Marat wanting to go to bed early to train the next day and be totally concentrated for his match(es) :haha:

I'm not so much an angry Marat fan, but I do get cynic at times

But venting? yessss lots of need for that. This thread is gonna be on top so much and all the newbies, passers by and lurkers will get very strange ideas about "so-called Maratfans"!

I didn't see the match so it's difficult to judge but what I'd like to know is if he tried(but was bothered by the wind) or that he tanked it. I couldn't stand it if he tanked it. Not after first saying the Olympics is not for tennis and then changing his mind, smiling and all.
In that case he'd just be lying and I do not support a lyar. I know he's not always honest but that would be too much.

Tanks Ulrike!....at least Justine is still there for you :)

I'm starting to calm down, I'm not angry anymore...
I can't say much about today's match as I didn't see it but I don't think he tanked...just my opinion

It's sad to see him wasting his talent but I really think he is seriously sick...too fragile mentally.
he really needs a psychologist. He's not only fighting with Lopez but with the wind, the balls, the court, the empire, etc...it's not only his "volatile russian character" .
He's lost on court. He's becoming more and more impatient : with so many UE's, he can't stand tough conditions, etc....

USO conditions will be the same: wind, balls, umpire, etc...he sufferers also a little bit from parano´a

Ulrike and others, don't give up....
I'm new on this forum but I've following Marat and tennis for several years. I will not give up on him because of his loses or his present state of
mind.
I like Marat because he is Marat...and can't do anything about that :help:

Marat needs to get his act together and go on a USO run to the finals. That's the only result I'll be happy with.

li'l red

marat really needs to be mentally tough... even if conditions are unfavorable to him... sure it affects his game but those are the things he has to deal with.. the way other players deal with them... i mean, they're playing the same balls, with the same wind, same surface... he needs to learn to adjust....

well... im not an expert to know what he should do or what he should not do... its just my opinion, we dont know for sure what's going on in his mind... it's marat.... but same with most of u, im supporting him all the way... guess im still hoping he'll come around soon...and im keeping my fingers crossed... ;)

red Jennifer
08-18-2004, 04:41 AM
yes, totally agree with all of you

i don't know whether he made efforts on the court or not, but it seemed that when he lost the 1st set, even the 1st set tiebreaker, he couldn't control himself, impatient, make errors, sometimes he shouldn't always offense, he should use his mind to play, but he didn't do that.

other players can win the match even if they lost 1st set, Andy is the best example. But for marat, maybe losing 1st set means losing the whole match, how fragile his mind

if he can't accept any broken by opponent or losing 1st set, it's difficult for him to win a tournament.

and his ability of adjusting the conditions is bad too. he just want to play in a very ideal conditons, God, no such that kind court exist.

anyway, i wish his better performance in US Open.

Bobby Starlog become Tennis Fool again??? :worship:

I visited # Marat Safin forums and some people are very hard with him.
As I said on GM I find it very rude and not appropriate to say he has to quit tennis....it's his life and he does what he wants.
I understand why everybody is disappointed but he's still 14 in the entry ranking....not that bad and there are lots of players behind him.

If they have no expectations for him anymore....that's OK take a break or choose another player.

I don't know if he'll win another slam but I'm not supporting him only because of his results (and of course neither you). Hope is primordial...if they have no hope anymore "and it's understandable"...take a break but stop saying he has to quit tennis.

They are just so hard with him because they really care about him and are really frustrated and i think its safe to say that like its going on now, its just sad to see.
And you see how sad Marat is on the court laterly, its not difficult to say that he is not happy at all also.

Yes he is still 14 in the ranking, but its not resemble... this position is basically still because of his AO Final, and the Estoril Final, Monte Carlo SF. But basically, after the AO he was done nothing, and especially the last weeks or months were a disaster.

I don`t think any Marat Fan support him only because of his results/success, he is a too special player/person for that, but I understand the frustration, because of course with Marat`s talent we have a lot of expactations and its sad to see when its going on like that.
Anyway for me, of course, I will always keep supporting Marat :) and I think all the others will too, its just a very, very difficult situation now.

Shadow

ALL Marat Fans please listen up! Our guy needs our support more than ever NOW.

Thats what Ruth wrote on tgfr.com :

A little bit of 'insider info' on Marat post-match - he was thoroughly upset (surprise surprise ) and he and Amit seemed to be having a long & private heart-to-heart in the hotel room. I guess there was lots of soul-baring and possibly a few tears too Although Peter is his coach, I think he is more distant with Marat, whereas Amit will listen to him rant and rave and then sit and talk to him quietly but rationally. I'm glad he's there for Marat right now.
More than anything, I was told Marat needed 'cheering up' from the fans. I think I'd forgotten, Marat can be his own harshest critic and it sounds like he may be really punishing himself for the loss last night
I'm pretty sure Marat & co are aware of the degree of his fans frustration and loss of faith/hope. But I think Marat's reached rock-bottom > he played the match, we watched the match, and we were all heart-broken by the end of it. He needs true fans now, more than ever - maybe even more than during his injury.

---
With all our understandable frustration, I hope we can all stick together and SUPPORT Marat as much as we can NOW, because he really needs it now and i hope all the hearts of true fans will show up. I think you can easily forget that its also very though for Marat, and that he really IS upset with himself (not like the people who say he doesn┤t care  ), and we know that Marat is the worst criticer of his own.
I wish we can also reach him somehow and tell him our support. I think we can write letters to his management and they will give them to him.

I don`t think he claims it. Other people said it.

I know that, but Marat does not have much fighting spirit and I doubt he'll suddenly start getting it. Marat needs to find a winning way that isn't like Hewitt's "never say die"attitude, but I doubt he'll find it. He just needs to think about his previous years and evaluate. I won't be surprised if he has never done that.
If Marat really reads what his fans write and how they feel, then he should know that all we say is being said out of enormous love for him.

Shadow
09-01-2004, 09:38 PM
We all know that Marat is not a Hewitt, but first of all, Marat must find his "way" on the court back, he looks totally lost out there, like he doesn`t know how to play anymore. Marat has already shown some real fighting heart in matches (its not his thing, but he can when he wants to) but for now its not possible, because he lost totally his way, he is a sad man out there.

what's most impt is that we band together and keep our faith in him... so that he knows that he's got a fan base that'll always be here for him.

I agree some things were cruel, but its the heat of the moment.

I think we cannot compare Marat to the other players who also have a bad year, Marat is DIFFERENT. First of all, with Marat its already since more than 3 years more or less, that he is wasting his talent... and second they are not as worse as Marat this year, and most important, they don`t have the talent of Marat, so we Marat Fans have much more expactations... and there comes the frustration.

They are not beginning to hate him, they are just frutrated with his performances. That doesn`t mean they will stop beeing a fan. I`m sure they will keep supporting Marat. As a fan its not bad to critize your player at times. Its better than the opposite.

A helpless depressed man

Safin hardly musters a fight
Watching No. 13 Marat Safin face reporters after his opening-round loss to unseeded Thomas Enqvist yesterday, it seemed the Russian had done something far more serious than simply lose a tennis match.

What's wrong with you, they wanted to know. Why can't you compete? What would you say to your fans?

"What can I say to myself?" Safin responded. "What can I say to most of the fans? I don't know."

maratski
09-02-2004, 02:04 PM
Personally I don't find the remarks on safinator cruel. I can understand where some of the comments come from. If Marat doesn't like tennis or if he has no passion for it or whatever then he should do something that does make him happy. Of course that's easy talking, but if he doesn't like to play, then it's better to quit.
What can annoy me most is that he's not being honest with himself and the rest of the world and the fact that he contradicts himself. One moment he hates the Olympics, then suddenly he loves it. One moment he hates grass, then he says he'll come back next year. One moment he says it's all about the slams, then he goes and plays some weird tournaments that don't fit into his schedule at all imo. There's so many more moments where he is contradicting himself and he needs to stop that. If he's not being honest with himself then in the end he's going to hurt himself badly and that's what we don't like to see. I believe that's the main reason why we can be hard on him at times.

I think the thing is that Marat doesn`t know himself what he wants and whats wrong with him.
He said all these things the last weeks, because he is lost and doesn`t want to open himself in front of the press. Deep inside he knows that what he said are all excuses, but he is a person who keeps it inside him, when he has problems with himself... that he in fact IS upset and disappointed with himself and does care, but he doesn`t show it outside, because he is lost and doesn`t know what to do. But one time it will all come out.

I know that most posters are true fans...of course...I was just a little bit surprised by the violence of few posts...they were very hard "from my personal point of view". I mean he's just a human being with his defaults and qualities...We don't have to be sooo obsessive
Anyway I don't want to make a fuss...I was just giving my "little" "very little" opinion ;)

haha...I'm laughing at myself right now...We are as lost as Marat...

andrea, you make me think of a saying, which says a person who is always amusive is virtually the most complex man. he keep everything inside instead of showing them. day by day, he has gotten a heavy burden...maybe he needs to release it as soon as possible...in fact, sometimes, I even hope he would seek the help from psychologist... could Freud work on him?

*sigh* I saw the first set, checked the result, still haven't watched the video and can only now visit over here again. I was not sad, I was indifferent, already numbed by past results. Got a bit sad reading this thread. He really doesn't see a way out of this. Again a break perhaps? The hunger was there at the AO this year, but it passed away. Some bad draws, no good wins, some hardfought journeyman wins on RG. Nothing since.
It's true though: he has a great ranking atm, every week the last months I am surprised no one passes him by. Thanks to the zero he has to defend of course. Just today I wondered how Tommy Haas is still only in the 40's, ok he had to come from way down and doesn't have a slam final. I'm gonna take comfort in Junekidd's signature, after a down, an up must come. For sure. Impossible is nothing.

As incredible as that 2nd set tb against Fed was, no *more* of them :( Marat should have consolidated his early break with good serving. Instead he OAFed and gave back the lead.

If he can just do that, we'd have a great rivalry.

TF, you're "bumping" all over the place! ;)

Yep, there's a lot of things marat shouldn't or should do, but those are part of him. Still need for improvement, still need for a pinch of confidence. The chance is slim to none the youthful, innocent, all-daring Marat of 2000 will return, but here's to an agressive, mature (but not tˇo ;)), all-daring Marat in 2005!

 Cultural moment!

The Hippo opened its doors July 7, 1972 and is believed to be the oldest gay nightclub, with the same name, in the country. The Hippo is composed of three rooms - the main dance bar with one of the most progressive light shows on the East Coast, a large saloon style bar with pool tables and video games and an additional bar which splits its time between a piano bar and video bar.

no, I stand by what I said, Marat's time is running out. I dont see him going at it for more than 4/5 years more, not with his body, not with his mentality. If he hasnt already passed the best tennis years of his career.... yes he's getting his act together but he's far from his best form but if he's going to do anything (else) at all it's now or never, harsh as it is it's true.

What do you call an insincere hippo?
A hippocrite.

How can you get a hippo to do whatever you want?
Try hipponotism.

How do hippos commute?
In a hippopotabus.

What do you call two hippos riding a bicycle?
Optimistic.

How can you be sure that a hippo is telling you the truth?
Have him take the Hippocratic Oath.

What do you call a hippo who thinks he's sick?
A hippochondriac.

Did you know that a hippo's yawn is not a sign of sleepiness or boredom but is actually a threat gesture? Yawning is the hippo's way of displaying its most fearsome weapons: its long, thick, razor-sharp canine teeth, or tusks, with which it is capable of biting a small boat in half.

I thought he practised 2 weeks on clay in Valencia...He's supposed to be a TOP player, no?

He has a great coach, he has a great body (healthy), he has a great game, he has a great life...And I'm not biased..but he has great fans. :fiery:

I know that he will surprise me one day...in a good way...again...But he's already 25...and Nadal, Gasquet, Monfils are there...waiting for him.
