I think Anastasia has a bit more respect both for herself, tennis and fans. She'll hand around longer.

To be honest, I'm so sick of making fun of Marat! SO SICK! I just wish that he'll rock in Athens. Ofcourse I realise the thin chances of that...  :smash:  :bigcry: :rain:  :hysteric: :crying2: :sobbing: :timebomb:

Don't get too depressed Vass...it's not like he was trying hard...Frankly, you knew he wouldn't win this tournament...you knew Safin was lying during his interview
We can't push him or change him...We can't do much besides support him "objectively" ;)
it's easy for us to make fun of him...his last victory goes back 2 years...and we are right...but he's not that bad or pathetic...He's there and he's 14th in the world and there are lots of players behind him...or injuried players like Juanqui or Coria ( I know fans this year is hard for you)...he's healthy this year hopefully :worship:

I don't expect him to win Athens...we can't expect too much from him...maybe he will surprise us or not..we never know
we don't support player because he's winning

The ceremony was great:D
But I didn`t see Marat. Only saw Youzny, Andreev, the russian girls and Nalbandian, Ferrero, Moya, Strycova, Philippousis, Strichaphan, Federer, Mauresmo, Schaul, Hantuchova, Rochus, Schnyder.
I guess he wasn`t there, as nobody spottet him.

Smiling Safin Happy to Eat His Olympic Words
By Ossian Shine

ATHENS (Reuters) - Everyone is allowed to make a mistake. Even Marat Safin.

The larger-than-life Russian player admits that when he said tennis had no place in the Olympic Games, he might have been a little hasty.

That comment at Wimbledon was the result of a frustrating loss and his volatile temperament.

Now that Safin is in Athens at the Games, he has come round.

"OK, so it's amazing," he grinned on Saturday, the eve of the Olympic competition.

"You know it's the most important tournament of the year and it's great to be here.

"It is just different. You play for your team, not yourself ... it's a different experience.

"So am I happy to be here? Yes, I am very happy."

The Russian missed most of last year through injury but came back with a bang, reaching the Australian Open final at the start of 2004.

"I am doing a really good job actually, getting back to the top," he laughed with typical candor. "All is well."

Switzerland's Roger Federer beat Safin in that Melbourne final and the Russian knows he is the man who has set the standard.

"Yeah, Roger is playing just amazing right now...I need to get to that level.

"But I am playing well ... happy with everything and hopefully I am going to win gold for my country," he smiled magnanimously, before letting his guard slip for just a second -- "Plus, there are lots of ranking points to be won."

Marat does a Games u-turn
By Ron Wall in Athens

15aug04
MARAT Safin would not say whether it was pressure from his German sponsors or the Russian National Olympic Committee but the volatile Russian has changed his mind about playing tennis at the Olympics.

Last month at Wimbledon he said tennis should leave the Olympics to the little sports, but now he can't wait to get started.

"Okay, so it's amazing," he grinned on the eve of the Olympic tournament at a press conference arranged by his German sports equipment makers.

"You know it's the most important tournament of the year and it's great to be here.

What had changed his mind?

"Very many reasons. Russia is a big country, we are trying to beat the US to be the top team."

"I am doing a good job actually, on the way to getting back to the top ten," he laughed. "All is well."

Safin went to the Sydney Olympics after beating Pete Sampras in the US Open final only to lose in the first round.

He is hoping for a little more here.

"I am playing well. I'm happy with everything, I've been preparing well and hopefully I am going to win gold for my country.

"Plus, there are lots of ranking points to be won." And he did put the Olympics ahead of Wimbledon. But for a straightforward reason.

"Wimbledon is very hard for me. You know, even when I lie I tell the truth."

Men's Singles : Marat SAFIN and Tim HENMAN 14 Aug. 2004

Comments from Marat SAFIN (RUS) and Tim HENMAN (GBR)

ATHENS, 14 August - Comments from Marat SAFIN (RUS) and Tim HENMAN (GBR).

Marat SAFIN (RUS)

On his comeback season:
"I am feeling good and I am on my way to the top 10. I hope to catch up with the top 10 players and beat them a couple of times."

On the Olympic Games:
"It is the most important tournament of the year. I am proud to be here and to compete for Russia. I hope to bring home a medal for my country."

On preferring the Olympic Games over Wimbledon:
"It is difficult to win Wimbledon for me so I prefer the Olympic Games because I have a better chance here."

Tim HENMAN

On the Olympic Games:
"The Olympic experience is something I have always enjoyed. I like Davis Cup tennis, being part of a team, but the Olympic team magnifies that feeling."

On his chances of winning:
"The field is as strong as it gets. Everybody wants to be here. It’s going to be tough."

On the Olympic Village:
"It is my third Olympics and the team atmosphere is great. There is no chance of me being in a hotel instead of the Olympic Village."

On the favourite in the men’s singles event:
"Roger FEDERER is the favourite going into the tournament. He has distanced himself from the pack, winning eight tournaments this year."

Men's Singles : Comments from SAFIN (RUS) after win 15 Aug. 2004

ATHENS, 15 August - Comments from Marat SAFIN (RUS) after his 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Karol KUCERA (SVK).

Q. You had a very, very strong opening set. What happened in the second set? Karol's game didn't improve quite that much. Was there a problem with the wind?

MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, it's a little bit of both. Tough conditions. We have very bad balls, I have to admit and I have to be honest. It's not balls that we used to play.

I don't know who choose to play with these balls, but it definitely made a lot of people suffering. And especially for his game, you know, it's a little bit windy, quite windy, and strange balls for him, for his game doesn't suit.

So first set it took him a little bit ‑‑ took him like all the first set to get used to it. But then he start to play better and better, felt little bit more confident on the court.

Q. Were you surprised with the few fans that were around the stadium, at least the number? Do you think that perhaps ‑‑ I know you made some comments a month ago, a little different than what you made a day or so ago. Do you think the people might just be watching other Olympic sports instead of tennis?

MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, but even this, I didn't see a lot of people watching other sports. If you check on the TV, there are not that many people that are really watching.

Q. Is that surprising to you? It's an Olympic Games?

MARAT SAFIN: It's not surprising to me. But I don't know what is the reason. But I definitely know there were some rumors that not many people are coming here. Even that I saw the rumours that the hotels, they are reducing 50 per cent of discount they're making on the rooms.

So I'm not surprised.

Q. Do you actually notice it? Some players say they're so focused they don't see anything. Do you?

MARAT SAFIN: Of course, we have to focus a little bit on our job, but we don't care about those kind of things. But still, we have eyes and we see that not many people are interested in the sports.

It's not like I'm catching you by surprise, no? You've noticed that also, right? Obviously.

Q. You were a little bit reluctant to come to begin with. Last night you were saying that you were actually happy to be here. What made you come if you were a bit reluctant?

MARAT SAFIN: Okay, that's the thing. It's a little bit ‑‑ it is a little bit different, Olympic Games, like for the tennis players than for other sport, for the other athletes because we have a little bit different schedule. We have 42 tournaments, 42 weeks we can play tennis, you know. For other athletes, they prepare for the World Championships, European Championships and Olympic Games. So basically they have three biggest event, and Olympic Games is every four years. For us we have four Grand Slam events a year.

So that's what I'm saying, it's a little bit different. You cannot just, you know, what is really important, what is not? Of course, Olympic Games is important because you're playing for the country and it's a little bit prestigious, and it gives you a good image. So that's the thing. I don't think it's not really nobody cares. Of course, everybody cares; otherwise, no people would come.

And especially that we have points also for winning this event. So basically if you play well, you can get lot of points, which is good for the race, to get to the end of the year to the Masters.

Q. So what made you decide to come?

MARAT SAFIN: I said the reasons.

Q. What would you think about having the Olympic Games as a team event?

MARAT SAFIN: Like Davis Cup? I don't know. Maybe it's a good idea. But still like this, maybe there is more chances to win more medals for the countries. You know, there is singles, doubles. Otherwise, it would be by team, is only one medal.

Q. Or a combination of team and individual.

MARAT SAFIN: Could be also a possibility.

We have got today elections to request the Abrogative of our president's government. :help: The “SI” (“yes” in Spanish) is the watchword to revoke him. The people are still voting until near 12:00am. Perhaps, we achieve that this time; hopefully ;) . However this is as our dear Hippo’s matches, bcs nobody knows what can happen. My new avatar is the opposition’s symbol. ;)

Yes, Bea

I did need around 7 hours to vote. They have retarded the electoral process a lot because they know that people need a change. The people have been massively in the electoral centers during the whole day :) . The People did wake up very early this morning to vote as you said. There is not any pronouncement official yet, but the tendency seems positive… if there are not sabotages. We’ll see.

if there are sabotages the country will be paralysed by the demonstrations, the increase of the price of oil, etc...no way :scared:

is it true peter packed his bags and left in the middle of the match?

I think I'll stick with the oaf untill after the USO.. I'm really starting to give up on the guy. I don't mind him losing but it's the way he loses that makes me want to hit him lol.
I bet this time it was the fault of the wind. Wake up marat, that's the same for everybody. :banghead: The fact that he lets it bother him so much is an indication he has no confidence whatsoever.

ezackly what i was saying to someone on msn...

it's not the grass this time...it's HARD COURT so logically, he ought not to have any problems...then...

ahhh....it's supposed to be indoors!! no wind! no sun...whatever...

but then we think...once he's indoors? the balls are too slow? the court's too fast? i dunno....

but oops...i'm supposed to keep my mouth shut. i'll keep my mouth shut then. and skip the hippononymous this time round.

Shadow

It doesn`t matter if its the grass, wind, sun, balls or whatever. Its not the problem.... Marat is fighting against himself... and uses this as excuse, because he can`t explain why his head is like that on the court. He is not fighting with the wind, the balls or the opponent... but with himself.

I don't think he will give up there, as it's a grand slam and he's been saying that the GS are the most important events of the year, but I hope he can play in ideal conditions lol. eg good draw, no wind, balls ok, court not too slow or to fast, crowd not too noisy, his favourite music during changes ;) etc etc (did I miss something) :p

I'll see after USO. Btw I hope peter lundgren doesn't walk out now, that could be a disaster

marat, no excuse for him now, himself is the point

i don't know whether there is a lot of problem on his attitude , but it's sure to be

USO, even if he focus on it, maybe he can't help himself losing again

angry and disappointing loss

I really hate to be the one to say this but I think Marat has absolutely no desire to play tennis anymore.
He's always full of excuses, refuses to fight and doesn't have enough consideration for his coach and trainor to make any kind of effort.
I think he's a great and talented player but lacks passion for the game. Just because you are good at something (like he is at tennis) doesn't mean that you should make a career out of it!
I think he should just leave the game now and find something to do that would really make him happy.

yes we all know its a question of his desire... at the moment its not there, but there were already many periods like this, but then it came back at the most unexpected moment.

Well, if in the indoor season the problem's not the light, then I'm certain all linesmen will conspire against our dear Hippo

We can always be certain to find amusing interviews, a couple of great shots per matches, some PG rated cursing & if we're lucky a broken raquet, that's the Hippo Entertaiment Guarantee ;)
