Roger/Yves got a very good doubles draw, especially considering they were unseeded. They could definetly get a medal.

jtipson
08-12-2004, 11:16 AM
They should be ok for the first round, but that potentially Paes/Bhupathi in the second? I think that will be far too tough.

Fedex
08-12-2004, 11:16 AM
Not that easy, a doubles draw, Wyvern. ;) They would likely, very, VERY, likely have to play Paes/Bhupathi in rd. 2. Not the easiest task, but it gets easier after that.

Fedex
08-12-2004, 11:18 AM
Hey, everyone lets cheer for Fish/Roddick in doubles (1st rd), that way, Roger/Yves should have an easy road to the QF. But Fish/Roddick have a 1/500 chance of beating Paes. Maybe even lower.

Marc Rosset is Tall

Hopp Roger/Yves

I am happy that Allegro is going to play with his childhood friend at the Olympics, but Roger plays Davydenko in the 1st round, it could have been Hrbaty.

Fedex, cheering for Fish/Roddick is nasty.

ytben
08-12-2004, 11:26 AM
Fedex, when I first read your sentence that you'll cheer for Andy/Mardy I almost choked
Yeah Paes/Bhupathi is so tough, it will be very hard for Rogi/Yves to get past them. Except maybe if bad blood between Paes/Bhupathi resurrect somewhat during the match, Rogi/Yves can get past them easily :p
But it will be so great if Rogi can bag two medals for his country.

The single draw is pretty evenly spread out, not one quarter too tough or too easy IMO. Rogi has Davydenko for first round. Anybody think he can pose any danger to take Rogi out? I never saw his match so not sure.

Anyway http://www.smiliegenerator.de/smiley-flag/smiley-2050.png

Fedex
08-12-2004, 11:26 AM
I would only EVER cheer for Fish/Roddick, if i felt it gave Rogi/Yves a better chance at a metal. And it does tremendously. If Roger/Allegro play Roddick/Fish that would be far, FAR, FAR easier than playing Paes.

Marc Rosset is Tall

I agree Fedex, I was being silly actually.

Fedex
08-12-2004, 11:32 AM
Daveydenko pushed Federer earlier this year at Miami, so, so close to taking him out. Up a break in the 3rd i believe. But that was ages ago, and Federer had been tired from his IW victory. If Roger plays well, it shouldent be much of a problem. Its really a good draw till the QF where he will likely play Nalbandian, but before that it should be smooth sailing :)

RonE

I don't think too much should be made of the Miami match. Davydenko is a crafty and tricky customer, but remember Rogi had the flu back then and he was tired coming off a tough tournament victory in IW. So, if he stays focused and plays at his best, I don't forsee too much of a problem.

Olympic time! I always have great memories following this event but never tennis...this time round, my priorities had completely changed

How nice will it be if he and Yves can win a medal? I suppose WyveN overlooked the possible Paes/Bhupathi? ;) How can that be easy WyveN?

But why does he and Nalbandian always have to be in the same quarter? I don't think that first round match vs Davydenko in Miami will be a good indication too, we all know Rogi was recovering from sickness going into that tournament.

btw did you guys see Rogi's pic in Athens in his "dorm"? Really does look like he's going back to the students "dormitory" life he so longer for :haha:

I think the only action I will get on Rogi here is him carrying the flag...so carry it well, Rogi

I'm not surprised. It's always either David or Hewitt. Hewitt is not available, so... Davidenko belongs to the strange crop of players who can give Roger some problems- no pace, running down everything.

Fast court surprises Federer

Roger Federer admits he has been surprised at the speed of the hardcourt at the Olympics and believes it will narrow the gap between the top players and the rest of the field. The men's singles gold looks likely to come down to a fight between the Swiss world number one and second seed Andy Roddick.

Federer is not so sure. "There are lots of players who won't be nice to play against on this surface as it is so fast," the 23-year-old told reporters.

"My first practice was not so good. I felt the ball was flying, it bounces very high and I had to get used to it.

"It's going to be very hard you know. Maybe a few guys are missing like [Andre] Agassi, [Lleyton] Hewitt, [Guillermo] Coria and some others, but the rest are here."

Ominously for his rivals, though, the Swiss added: "However, now I've played many hours on the court and I feel good.

"The last few practices were much better. I have started to find my rhythm."

Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo has compared the blue hardcourt at the Olympic Tennis Centre to the surface at the Australian Open - a good omen for Federer who won his first grand slam of the year in Melbourne.

Federer opens up against Russian Nikolay Davydenko on Monday. The Russian is ranked 56 in the world and will be no pushover.

"For me there are no easy matches around, it's very close to the level of the third round of a grand slam," Federer added.

"It's going to be difficult for every tennis player to play well from the start."

Rogi has shown quite a bit of frustration throughout the last few weeks... I think he is expecting too much from himself.:
That statement reminds me of something Johnny Mac said during the Wimby finals. He said, "It looks like Roger is reading too much of his own press." And from his reactions recently, I am tending to agree. Obiviously, he is the most naturally TALENTED and GIFTED tennis player ever. He has raised the bar of men's tennis to a new level, but he is not perfect(though he is damn close). I wonder if he is placing too much pressure on himself. The constant super high standard and level of tennis that he has made people expect from him might be taking it's toll. Though, I hope I am completely wrong and this was just a one time thing. Anyways, Roger you are a tennis god. :worship: :worship: :worship:

RonE
08-16-2004, 08:46 PM
I have seen Berdych play earlier in the year- he seems to have talent, but doesn't quite have the mental capacity to do too much damage, at least not YET.

He is your typical "assembly line player"- that is, he hits every shot well and clean, solid groundstrokes but there isn't one defining shot or characteristic about him.

Gee, I kinda like Roger when he shows his emotions and throws a racket once in a blue moon. ;) But I agree, maybe he is expecting too much of himself. There's an awful lot of pressure on him to maintain his tennis god status and I can't imagine what it must be like to maintain such top form day in and day out.

But once he settles in and gets used to the conditions there, he'll be on his merry way to the podium. :)

Pls, can we stop calling Roger God? That's not a nice thing to say, especially with a capital letter. He is no God. God is God and let's leave the respect God deserves to God. Roger is a divinely talented player who plays an almost perfect game. Simple. Any comments of Roger being God is very pompous and arrogant, as far as I am concerned, and are not helping matters about how he is perceived or how his fans are perceived. Pride cometh before a fall. Thanks for listening, and I hope no one takes this wrongly.

Is he playing singles tomorrow?

I thought Roger was playing well until 5-2 in the 1 st set. Then he failed to convert a few set points in the 1 st set and a few break points in the beginning of the second set. I guess it brightened up Davidenko's hopes. He started to play better and hit a couple of winners out of nowhere. Roger played three horrendous games at the end of the second set. Davidenko basically had to do nothing to break Roger two times. It's disturbing. In the 3rd set Roger collected himself and Davidenko couldn't hurt him in any way.
On the bright side, I liked that Roger was very agressive throughout the match and mixed baseline play with s&v which is important on this fast surface.

I will see it when I get home tonight. Barry must love Rogi. All the old guys who played tennis when it was an art form love him because he is just like them and he is bringing back the golden days of the 50s and 60s with his play. I'm just kidding about the god stuff Rogi knows he is special and sets the bar very high. He is a perfectionist. That is why he gets hard on himself. Maybe in my next letter to him which will accompany his late birthday gift I will address that.

rue
08-17-2004, 12:21 AM
I think that since he has been winning so much he kinda does expect more of himself because he knows that he can play better than he may have been in the last few weeks. I think also that he may be just mentally tired and he did defend his Wimbledon title, but it may now be a bit hard for him to push himself to continue to play good tennis. He will be fine soon enough and he is only human.

http://www.athens2004.com/en/LatestNews/newslist?oid=481a28c51e86ef00VgnVCM4000002b130c0aR CRD

Q. That was the most frustrated and angry I think I've seen you in a match. Did it have to do with the wind or anything else? I had never seen you smash the racquet on a court before.

ROGER FEDERER: I don't know how many times you've seen me play, you know. It happens quite often still. Come by in practice sometimes. It happens even more often (smiling).

 Obviously this reporter missed all Rogi's matches in Toronto or Rome. Just continue to throw a few more racquets each match Rogi, this question will eventually stop coming ;)

Q. Some of the players complained about the surface that has been used in this tournament. How do you find it?

ROGER FEDERER: I find it okay. You know, I find it fair. It's medium speed for me. Took me also one or two days to get used to the conditions. But you come to certain tournaments, you feel good right away. Like for me in Toronto, I arrived, my practice was great, my first round. Here, just took me a little bit longer. So that's all I can say. You know, the wind was tricky today. But about the surface and balls, nothing to say.

He actually felt good right away in Toronto? Nothing to say meaning? I guess he didn't feel good about that but didn't want to say it out?

Federer is not playing his best these days. I believe that the big successes of this year, the anxiety of equaling records like the Pete’s 24 wins in row :worship:, and the big expectations that Roger has generated in fans and journalists have been able to affect his game and that can be reflected as a mental exhaustion. I do understand the frustration of a player, which has had a brilliant year, and suddenly doesn't find his game, to exception of that brilliant final at Toronto. I hope this “little slump” doesn't affect him psychologically. Go for the gold Roger. :yeah:

"I've been dreaming quite a long time to again be part of the Olympics. Now it's the case. And I feel good to be here and to have won my first round. At the same time, I'm very proud to have -- to have been able to carry the flag for Switzerland. It hasn't been a dream for me in my career to actually carry the flag. But once some of the people were starting to talk about it, I said, "That would be really, really nice." I'm very happy it was me."

:haha: I don't think he meant it as a joke, but it's just funny the way he said it.

So Rogi has to play 2 matches at very close time gap today, tough.

Like Rogi said himself, he is really under loads of pressure now, thinking that probably he is the only hope of Switzerland to get a gold medal in this Olympics. Now that he has done for the first step, things should get a little easier afterwards. Roger really should get rid of the idea that he is playing the once-in-a-four-year Olympics, should just focus on his game.

Roger is God ;) the tennis God :) We all know that ;) Nothing should stop him achieving his goals in tennis.

Not knowing your opponent is no excuse for 3 dfs. He is messing up. Simple. What's the essence of that? Making all those errors repeatedly?

Lady Natalia
08-17-2004, 03:44 PM
This twice that he served for the match and loses serve. What is going on? He must have something pressing on his mind. He started both matches excellently and then hands the second set over.

Mrs. B

Roger's serving better.... 1-1

Mrs. B., watching this live? Any general comments on Rogi's tennis today? Berdych playing better or well??

Struggling early on, not a good sign... just too much pressure I think... he wants it so badly...

Yuk...

Pls, Rogi, regroup and take the 3rd easily... come on, you have dbles... this is too tough.

Hmm... this is tougher than Toronto... wonder if Rogi's still tired, mentally, that is. He still has so much pressure until the end of the TMC Houston...

OK, ROGI, HOPP to it!!!

OPA!!!

Look guys, Roger is taking too many chances on his own service games, and even on the return games. The court speed and bounce dont favor that. I must say I have never seen a court with a bounce as high as that. Roger needs to find a fine line between being aggresive and being defensive. He cannot just be going for it all the time and giving his opponents confidence. That's pretty disgusting. Everyone keeps saying pressure is on him. Pressure is on everyone playing there. So, what if he is the favorite for the Olympics gold? Does that mean he should not play within himself? He needs to mellow and keep his head in check and stop reading all those press. That's it.

When you don't know your opponent you start thinking too much. Therefore it ruins your concentration and as result there are more errors.

I cant stand not getting any information. Damn these scoreboards. The Athens2004 is so far behind.

Rogi needs to calm down and play his game. I can't believe this. Maybe this is just too much for him.

Mrs. B
08-17-2004, 03:50 PM
the Czech's playing with more confidence now. Roger making ue's. he doesn't look comfortable there, sideglances while waiting for serve to his 'supporters'?

WyveN
08-17-2004, 03:51 PM
I dont think its a pressure problem, he had pressure at Wimbledon and played well. Probably just the court, Roger looked awful in Australia in the tune ups as well, of course here there are no tune ups.

Roger serves 3 aces in a row for 40-0, puts an easy fh to the net, shakes his head, serves a 4th ace.

Thank you, WyveN, the court is a pretty much stupid court, even if Roger said it doesn't matter. The court has so many weird bounces, and the bounces are too high also. The court favors people with huge serves as they are able to get freebies easily. But, Roger seems to be to be trying to overpower his opponent. From the match yesterday, he was going for some shots unneccesarily and they were on crucial points. He needs to find his rhythm, but not at the expense of the match.

Dirk
08-17-2004, 03:53 PM
He can still do it. Come on Rogi. Score?

That is so true. In America they have 7 channels devoted to the Olympics. And the channel that shows tennis is now showing rowing. I have to reduce myself to looking at scoreboard that is 3 games behind.
