I got to watch two half-matches today. I caught the second set of Thomson-Lazaro (won by Thomson, 6-2 7-5) and the second set of Los Santos-McCulloch (won by Los Santos, 6-1 7-6 (2)). Both good second sets. I definitely enjoyed myself. :)

I'll try to post pictures when I can. :)

I'm trying to find updates and results on this (not yet online), but apart from the results that I got to see, all I know is that all the Filipinos playing today, except for Patrombon, lost their first round matches. Patrombom defeated Turudic.

I was planning to catch the Alcantara-Thomson match, but alas, it's at 9am, and I'll just be waking up at that time. Oh well.

I'll do my best to catch Morrissey and/or Barry. The way the courts are setup, though, is that audiences can only clearly see three of the seven available courts. Apart from the rafters on Center Court, which can hold a LOT of people, there are only two smaller sets of rafters which are facing one court each. There are four other courts on the inside, and it's next to impossible to view the action there. :(

And, heh, if you're so inclined, I'm on Twitter, and I'll try to Tweet how the match I'm watching is going. My username is hyperren . ;)

I sadly missed almost all of the Boys action today, as they switched the order of play for today (yesterday, it was Girls then Boys, today, it's Boys then Girls) and I arrived after lunch. All I caught was Civarolo come back from 4-5 down in the third set to defeat Claeys 7-5. Tough match. The heat (and the length of the match) was clearly getting to both players, and Civarolo even took an injury timeout.

The scores aren't up yet, officially, but I took note of the scores on the board, which they mercifully updated this time around. So, unofficially, here are today's results:

Liang-Chi HUANG (TPE) (1) d Pavel KRAINIK (CAN), 7-5 6-1
Sebastian LAVIE (NZL) d Sam BARRY (IRL) (14), 6-1 6-2
Laurent-Olivier DAXHELET (BEL) d Alessandro BEGA (ITA) (9), 6-1 6-7 (6) 6-3
Daniel BERTA (SWE) (6) d Sudanwa SITARAM (IND), 6-2 6-4

Dominik SCHULZ (GER) (3) d Mads ENGSTED (DEN), 6-1 2-6 6-2
Stephen HOH (AUS) d David THOMSON (GBR) (13), 6-1 6-2
Ben MCLACHLAN (NZL) (11) d Jeson PATROMBON (PHI), 6-2 6-4
Suk-Young JEONG (KOR) (8) d Juan Antonio LOS SANTOS (MAS), 6-4 6-2

Riki MCLACHLAN (NZL) (5) d Alastair BARNES (GBR), 7-6 (3) 6-0
John MORRISSEY (IRL) (10) d Christian Oliver LEE (MAS), 6-1 6-1
Kaza Vinayak SHARMA (IND) (16) d Zachary WHITE (CAN), 6-4 6-2
Jeroen BENARD (NED) d Emanuele MOLINA (ITA) (4), 6-4 7-6 (3)

Maximilian NEUCHRIST (AUT) (7) d Joey SWAYSLAND (AUS), 7-6 (4) 6-2
Muddappa APPANERVANDA (IND) d Jordan KELLY-HOUSTON (NZL) (12), 1-6 6-2 6-1
Matteo CIVAROLO (ITA) (15) d Jeroen CLAEYS (BEL), 2-6 6-2 7-5
Francis Casey ALCANTARA (PHI) (2) d Mathew THOMSON (GBR), 6-3 6-2

Again, these are UNOFFICIAL results until they're put up on the site. Don't kill the messenger if they're wrong; the officials already miswrote that Engsted beat Schulz (they fixed it already).

Home from another day of tennis. I went home early, missing the doubles matches, but I caught a couple of Boys' Singles matches. I watched the Alcantara-Civarolo match, which was a thrilling three-setter that, unfortunately, Alcantara lost. :( Then I caught the Berta-Daxhelet match, which was far less thrilling, with Berta winning 3 and 1. (I was definitely hoping for a longer match.) I also caught the third set between R. McLachlan and Morrissey, though it was from afar as it was in the far court. Morrissey started that set strong, charging to a 3-0 lead, but R. McLachlan rallied and won the next six games to win the match 6-3 in the third.

I have pictures from all three matches, and I managed to have my picture taken with Civarolo in the bleachers while watching the R. McLachlan-Morrissey match. :)

Anyway, here are the unofficial third round results.

3rd ROUND
Liang-Chi HUANG (TPE) (1) d Sebastian LAVIE (NZL), 6-4 6-2
Daniel BERTA (SWE) (6) d Laurent-Olivier DAXHELET (BEL), 6-3 6-1
Dominik SCHULZ (GER) (3) d Stephen HOH (AUS), 6-2 6-3
Suk-Young JEONG (KOR) (8) d Ben MCLACHLAN (NZL) (11), 7-6(6) 6-2

Riki MCLACHLAN (NZL) (5) d John MORRISSEY (IRL) (10), 7-5 6-7(5) 6-3
Kaza Vinayak SHARMA (IND) (16) d Jeroen BENARD (NED), 1-6 6-3 6-3
Maximilian NEUCHRIST (AUT) (7) d Muddappa APPANERVANDA (IND), 6-4 6-0

Big and nice win for Berta!!!

Alcantara is so much overrated...like lots of Asian players , they earn only a lot of points cause Asian Tournaments often has a nice Grade but less competition.

The upper half is much better now!!! 3 favorites for the win!!

Alcantara plays smart and not strong. He had some really good drop shots against Civarolo, and of course, the crowd was behind him. I was rooting for him, obviously, but all in all, it was a great match.

The doubles matches have been delayed, some first round matches are being played today leading into some second round matches.

John :sobbing: Missed out on a very winnable QF. How does he actually play from what you saw, hyperren?

It was a great baseline showdown from both players. Morrissey stands waaaaay behind the baseline. I would know coz I had a hard time trying to take his picture, he was always behind the fence separating the two courts (Court 1 and 2). It looked like a really good match, too, if it weren't on the inside court.

Good win for Berta, next round will be tougher but I hope he can take it

I hope so too! With Alcantara gone, I'm rooting for Berta, because (1) he's Alcantara's doubles partner, (2) he seems really nice in person (I caught him catching with one of the ball boys after the match, and I got to congratulate him after the match as well), and (3) he's Swedish, and I have Swedish cousins. :) I'll try to catch his match tomorrow.

The Berta-Huang match was a good one. Berta broke Huang once in the first set to win that set. Huang broke Berta twice in the second set to win that set. Berta saved a LOT of break points as well. Berta then broke Huang once in the third set...

...then we were hit by a rain delay with Berta to serve, up 3-2 in the third.

The rain delay last about two hours. The next games went on-serve, and Berta won the match.

Berta is very, very agile! He moves around the court really well, chasing down balls like anything. Huang's strength was in his placement; he made Berta run around the entire match.

After a couple of hours, Berta was back on Centre Court for his doubles match, which - of course - was packed, as he was partnered with local boy Alcantara. Good match against the Thomson brothers of Great Britain, but Alcantara/Berta won in straight sets.

I also saw the last set between Riki McLachlan and Sharma. McLachlan has a wicked serve that seems to turn as it approaches his opponent. Very cool.

Chris-swede
03-27-2009, 02:58 PM
Thanks for the correspondence! Nice to read!

Berta is only 16 i think, turns 17 in the end of the year, pair of days later and he would only be born 1993....never forget!!! He can really make some noise in the future.

hyperren
03-27-2009, 03:11 PM
Yes, Berta is very impressive. And maybe it was because of his association with Alcantara, but the locals (myself included) were cheering for Berta during his match. He had a lot of great saves, rushing to the corners that Huang was hitting the ball to.

It was also funny seeing how differently Huang and Berta dealt with the rain delay. Berta was with his group, chatting and relaxing, while Huang seemed to just be quiet with his coach/trainer.

The local crowd was also cheering for the McLachlan brothers during their quarterfinal doubles match. THAT was a good one. The first set went on-serve, then the second set went on-serve, except for one break each. Some great shots and lots of great rallies as well. The crowd - whatever was left at 7pm, anyway - lapped it up.

All semifinal singles matches - boys and girls - start at 9:30am tomorrow. Berta-Schulz is on Centre Court, while McLachlan-Civarolo is on Court #1. The girls are relegated to the inside courts, #2 and #3. Then it's the doubles semis - again, with the boys taking the main court - followed by the doubles finals, the boys on Centre Court and the girls on Court #1. Berta and McLachlan could be playing three matches in a row tomorrow!

Today's Results:

Boy's Singles:

Berta beats Schulz 6-3 ; 6-3
Maclachlan beat Ciravolo 7-5; 75

Boy's Doubles:

Semifinals
Maclachlan brothers beat Huang and Schulz (5-7; 6-4 - 13-11 tiebreak)
Berta and Alcantara beat Lavie and Barry (6-1; 6-2)

Finals

Berta and Alcantara beat Maclachlan brothers (6-3; 6-0)

Tomorow I'm picking Daniel Berta to beat Riki Maclachlan, no disrespect to Riki but I really don't see anything in his arsenal that could bother Berta who just playing too strong and solid.

Berta and Riki McLachlan both played three matches today, and they face each other again in the Boys' Singles final tomorrow. I think Berta is the better all-around player, which is amazing as he's only 16. McLachlan does have a wicked serve, though.

Berta has also become a local favorite, thanks to his association with Alcantara. And everyone just seems amazed by him, myself included.

I'm behind, and running out of Flickr bandwidth, but I added a whole bunch of pictures from Day 3 (Thursday), including a little girls' singles (the Babos match), Francis Casey Alcantara vs. Matteo Civarolo, Daniel Berta vs. Laurent-Olivier Daxhelet, and a dash of Riki McLachlan vs. John Morrissey.

I have a looooot more to add, mostly from Berta's singles and doubles matches.

Nope, not a professional... I just have a really nice camera and good timing. Hahaha!

So... Berta won in straight sets. :D He's definitely gonna shoot up the rankings after claiming maximum points for winning both singles and doubles. I also had my picture taken with both Berta and Alcantara, as well as their respective autographs. :)

Francis Alcantara's slump continues as he lost to an unheralded Japanese player in his first match straight sets in the recently concluded Japan ITF junior open. Too much pressure I think is causing him to loose all these matches, the Philippines really made a big deal in his winning the Australian Open doubles early this year and maybe he is trying too hard. In doubles he is still playing great because of his natural talent and he usually have a steady partner he can depend on, however I don't see the same confidence in his singles game (he actually played better I think last year)as he has been too defensive and error prone lately.

Well all is not lost I hope he rebounds and plays good again in the claycourt season starting this May. I still think is he is our best prospect in tennis in the Philippines for a very long time.
