Unless Fed learns to back off the baseline he can't beat Murray or Nadal on any surface. The depth on their shots to his backhand is killing him. If he stands 1 meter back he can take a full swing instead of all these half-volleys. Robby Koenig mentioned this several times.

I agree with Robby on that one. He needs more time on the drive BH to control it better. Another option could have been to just slice deep to keep the ball in play and anticipate the occasional DTL shot (easier said than done I know).

Your optimism is inspiring.Do you really mean it? Did you watch the game? Roger just try his agression just to see if it is still there - in the second and third set Murray just kept ball in the court /Simon style/. Federer was the one making the points /winners/UE/.
As a fan we have the right to be disappointed but I think you exaggerating to much.

Not really. I think the game has simply evolved to glorified counterpunchers(Nadal, Murray). I actually like Djokovic because he's more of an attacking player.

Counter punchers, pushers, moonballers, junk ballers have all ruined the game. It's no fun to watch whatsoever when it's all about who makes the least amount of errors vs who's hitting the most winning shots. Roddick is close to top 4 now and he's the biggest pusher out there. Roger and Djoker - both of whom can play attacking tennis are totally awol right now. I seriously may quit watching the sport if things don't change.

The Miami draw isn't too bad. Except once again Andy Roddick gets a bunch of nobodies in his quarter.

I know this is pie in the sky but I'm hoping IW was Roger shaking off the rust after not having played for 6 weeks and he'll play better in Miami. I know the surface in Miami is different that IW. Does anyone know if it's the same speed or is faster? I've heard that IW is one of the slowest hard courts out there.

I don't care about the draw. Roger can beat everyone to the final /incl.. Murray who reach his limit and I think there is nothing optimistic for all englishmen/. Federer just continue not to care about this masters. Everyone could see it at semi against Murray. I still continue to think Roger's main purpose was to see how far Murray can go. All we know that lately real Federer could be seen at GS only /and clay masters perhaps/ It is time for us to change our vision and accept the fact that psychological factors now reflect on Federer's game more than ever. And I think
two are clearly seen: lack of proper motivation at masters and other nonGS events and of course Nadal.

A nice draw on paper, of course you never know what to expect til they're out on the court but on paper I'd say Roger is a fairly sure bet for the final, certainly a semi at least. So basically you will only support him when he's winning? Well, that's an oxymoron.

To truly support someone or something is to encourage them and cheer them on, regardless of the circumstances. Unconditional and all that. To do so only if said person or thing is winning is called bandwagoning.

Not good but if he was angry after the Murray match, I think he will try to make the necessary adjustments like not get into a BH to BH exchange with Murray or a FH to BH exchange with Nadal by slicing a lot more or staying further back behind the baseline to gain more control over the drive BH etc.

I disagree with this as much as i hate watching fed play rafa, he needs to defeat rafa at his best. Its a tall order as rafa obviously has a huge psychological edge, however i believe roger needs a big win and then no matter the surface he will have a good chance of beating anyone, and will play more freely. To add to that, i must be the only one who wishes his draw was a bit tougher. I prefer when he plays good grinders from the get go so that he can practise his strokes more.

I agree with you. He will get a lot of confidence if he wins a big title irrespective of who his opponent is but given Nadal and Murray's form and the speed and bounce of the court, he will have to face one of them if he reaches the final. He simply cannot hit his way out of trouble on this court. He will have to be patient and re-learn how to grind out matches as he progresses through the tournament.

Federer says back not a handicap

MIAMI (AFP) — World number two Roger Federer says his back could be better, but isn't a serious hindrance as he continues his pursuit of a first ATP title of 2009.

"The back is OK," Federer said as he geared up to open his campaign at the second Masters 1000 tournament of the season here. "I still wish it was better, but it's not really handicapping me even when I'm playing."

Federer took six weeks off after falling to world number one Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open on February 1.

He made his return at the first Masters 1000 tournament of the season in Indian Wells, California, last week.

Britain's Andy Murray, ranked number four in the world, beat Federer in three sets in the semi-finals at Indian Wells.

"I just didn't play a great match against Andy," Federer said. "But the tournament was OK. At least I had the match on my racquet when I played Andy, whereas last year when I lost to Fish, I didn't have that much control.

"I haven't played in awhile, so it was a decent comeback," he said of his California campaign

I personally felt his serve was a bit off, it was quite slow compared to how it normally is. Against Murray, his average serve speed was something like 112mph. I don't know what happened to it, but from Gonzalez match onwards it looked like it was missing that "umph". A lot of first serves missed too . Hope it improves for this tourny though :yeah:

He was using very safe 1st serves in terms of power and placement. I just chalked it up to him probably not having worked on his serve much while he was strengthening his back and getting comfortable with it in IW. If his back is indeed at 100%, I expect him to add more power and place it better in Miami.

I disagree re: Nadal. This never worked on clay, so I don't see it working anywhere else, unless Roger is playing out of his skin. I don't think Roger has to beat Nadal right now to get the confidence back. He just needs to win a big title period. If he beats Murray and/or Nadal in the process then that's an added bonus.

I politely disagree, hamburg is not really clay. Plus the way he played at RG was so awful which matters do worse. I firmly believe that roger is the kind of player whose confidence rises when he overcomes players who give him problems e.g Hewitt, Nalby

yeye, i noticed that in 08,..he like,.hold serve easly, and then from no reason he makes (VERY QUICKLY ) 2-3 UE, AND one good return from 2nd serve,..and he's 0-40...
also when he's on like,.30-30,.and loses point,.. lately he loses 2 points in a row way to easy,..

The tour has slowed down tremendously since 2007. Look here: http://tennisinsight.com/tournaments.htm Compare tournament speeds from 2007-2008 and you will be amazed. The tour is still slowing down even now.

I haven't looked at the court speed stats but once they changed TMS Paris from carpet to medium HC, I knew their intentions. Roger and all other players that rely on their aggressive game have to adapt or should be in the process of adapting.
