Hmm, definitely tempted to go up to Notts for a day or two (especially as the coach can be only a Ł1 each way ).

And there is Adrian, Nico and Doud, with maybe Seb too. Good line up for me (I'm such a Francophile)

Liking that Kei and Frank will be there too and the legendary Gooch of course. ;) It's a fun entry list.

Any ideas when they're scheduled to do that?

Done a quick write up of the matches I saw. Hope it gives some useful info.

First match I saw was Dimitrov v Thornley (6-3 6-2 to Grigor). Had never seen Dimitrov play before and was curious to see what the hype was about. I was pretty impressed. He has a textbook "smooth" gamestyle, hits a good slice, decent serve and volleys. He had a tendency to go for it too much at times, but Thornley wasn't really a match for him. Thornley does have a pretty good serve however which won him a few free games and if he gets into better shape could be a bit higher ranked IMO. Match ended on a very friendly handshake which was good to see.

Goodall v Marsalek was a decent contest; watched the end of it and Goodall hits some pretty powerful shots, if a little clumsy looking IMO. More than enough to do the job though.

Milton took out second seed Im in two easy sets; wasn't too impressed with Im or with third seed Ward who lost to Anderson - Ward hit a few great shots followed by inexplicable errors.

Dent didn't show for his match against Groth; replaced by lucky loser, Seterling-Johnsson (I think). Groth's serve is easily his biggest weapon from what I saw, but it's a good one. He kind of throws himself into it, but it's pretty effective.

Jonny Marray lost to (Andrew?) Ward in straight sets. Pretty surprised at this one, as I always remember Marray as a good grass courter (remembered that match where he took Hewitt to two tie breaks at Queens). Think he might just be back from injury though.

Saw a bit of Ghedin beating Oli Evans on the court opposite Dimitrov. Didn't see enough to make a judgement on him as a player, but noticed he hit a few good volleys here and there. He also seemed like a friendly likeable guy. Later saw him at the Ianuzzi-Ito match. Think he was there to cheer Ianuzzi on (they walked off together at the end), but he spent most of him time looking at his fingernails and smiling to himself during the match. Don't think he even claped for a single point, lol. Ito won in straights; a good solid player. Ianuzzi seemed grouchy, muttered to himself a bit and got a warning for hitting the ball out of court at one point. After the match, Ito's coach and (what I assume where) his family came running up to congratulate him, which was nice to see. He also took the time to shake hands with the ball kids afterwards.

Saw Muller practising on an outside court and spotted the Gooch at one point, although I didn't see him on the court. A good day all in all, except I'm now pretty sunburnt.

Reports (from a British point of view):

Top effort from Josh he won from a set and *4-3 down, very long game in the 8th of the second set before Josh finally broke through and then broke again to take the set. Final set went with serve all the way through to the TB, not for want of trying though. Josh missed 3 match points at 4-5 after brave play by Jenkins. There was really absolutely nothing it for the duration of the match, both players having big but solid and unspectacular games relying on their serves to set up the point. Finished with a double fault from Jenkins, a bad end to a terrific, hard fought, match.

Watched the above match more than the Eaton match but from what I did see Chris was very, very, very good at the net. As I am sure you know both players have massive serves but Chris had slightly the better movement which shone through at 4-5 in the breaker when a long rally ended with Anderson not getting to a big Eaton fh quick enough and netting which was the defining moment.

Saw none of the Evans-Amritraj match, sorry.

Tough loss for H&H in the doubles, Hutch must be sick of the sight of Bubka. Kudryavtsev & Bubka just pelted everyting from the back of the court. H&H were winning the MTB until Huss had a hissy fit over I have no idea what at *8-7. Bubka hit a return winner down the line and then Huss told Kudryavtsev very clearly, and for no reason that was apparent to me, he was a t***. When the Russian said he didn't speak English very well, he went up to him and repeated it right in front of his face (*), amazingly not getting a warning from the umpire. Huss then proceeded to double fault and then miss a return and then depsite Ross pulling out a good return he netted a volley on match point and it was all over.

Jim Thomas played amazingly well in his match with Bopanna against Boggo & Cox for someone who has been out for 7 months. Cox said he had hit 15 lines. Lipsky & Booty were a class above Eaton & Slabba and Coetzee must have played well in his match because he earnt a bow from Brendan Evans at the end.

Would be interesting to know what caused Huss to get so angry. Should not have done what he did but WTF was Kudryavtsev doing in that picture. When you clearly anger a guy who isn’t renowned for getting angry very often you don’t lean on the net towards your opponent and pull a pose like that. That is just asking to get hit across the face.

"I'm happy to get through my first match on grass, my serve worked pretty well today. My next round is going to be tough but I'm trying to get as many matches on grass before heading to the big one, Wimbledon."

Sebastien Grosjean (FRA) bt Dan Cox (GBR) [WC] 6-1 6-3
"I'm really disappointed with the way I played, I didn't play the way I wanted to today. I got off to a really bad start, I was up in my first service game and ended up dropping serve and it went downhill from there. He might have been out injured but a player of his ability doesn't forget everything he knows overnight. He is still an amazing player and he still moves expeptionally well. He took the ball early and I wasn't able to get any rhythm or put any pressure on him," said Dan.

Butorac and Lipsky Win AEGON Trophy

Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky served up an ace-fest at the Nottingham Tennis Centre to take the AEGON Trophy men’s doubles title over Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming 6-4 6-4.
All four men contributed to what was a classic display of tactical doubles, the final punctuated by some thrilling volley rallies at the net.
In the opening set Butorac and Lipsky edged ahead in the fifth game, breaking to lead 3-2 and maintaining that advantage to serve out the opener despite some stiff opposition from the British pair as they served it out in the tenth game.
Games went with serve until the seventh game of the second set when Butorac and Lipsky claimed Fleming’s serve on the sudden death deuce point, Butorac making the return before placing a winning forehand in Fleming’s forehand corner for 4-3.
A straightforward Lipsky service game extended that lead to 5-3, leaving Skupski to serve to keep the British pair in the match. He did so, nailing his service game with an ace to trail 4-5.
Sadly for the Brits, their stay of execution was short lived. While they managed to advance to a 30-40 lead on Butorac’s serve, the American pairing got back into the courtesy of yet another Butorac ace, leaving match point to be decided on another sudden death deuce.
The Americans claimed the title when a Fleming backhand lob landed wide of the tramlines.
After the match Butorac was happy to have clinched the title in spite of the rain that forced play onto the indoor courts for the second-consecutive day.
“It was a good win for us, the courts were quick out there and that made for quick points with a lot of serving and returning and no long rallies,” said the world No.45 ranked doubles player.
“One of our greatest strengths as a partnership is that we both serve well. Today we got a lot of first serves in which meant that we were able to hold easily and put a lot of pressure on them in their service games.”
World No.61 Lipsky said that he was proud of the pair’s results on grass throughout the week. “I think we both have games suited to grass because we both serve and return well.
“The matches we won this week on grass should help us in the next few weeks in our warm up to the big one at Wimbledon,” he said.
After the final Skupski said the British pairing had felt out of touch throughout the match.
“It was a tight one,” said the Lancashire player. “Unfortunately they served too well for us to get the breaks today. We didn’t serve as well as we have been and that meant we didn’t have much opportunity to get into the match, and we had some tough deuces that didn’t go our way which didn’t help.
But Britain’s No.4 ranked doubles player said both he and Colin Fleming were feeling optimistic about the remainder of their grass court season after a good week in Nottingham.
“What we’ve done here this week is good for us going forward to the AEGON Championships at Queen’s and we are looking forward to that challenge and hope that things go our way in the next few weeks,” he said.
