Dear Fans

I arrived in Indian Wells earlier this week and I am eager to get back out on court. My back is feeling much better and I am ready to go.

I also have some really awesome news to share with all of you: Mirka and I are excited to let you know that we will be parents this summer! Mirka is pregnant and we are so happy to be starting a family together. This is a dream come true for us. We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well.

Speak soon and thanks for all your continued support!

Never lose faith in Muzza's ability to get unexpectedly hurt, ill or braindead. It's why we love him so much.

But let's not make this about Muzza, since it's about ExFed.

The natural extension is to hear from the MTFers what baby names they propose (either male of female).

negative. that is what the massive wealth is for. they will have somebody else take care of the baby.

this new development does have some interesting implications however. for once in his life, Fed has to think about somebody else other than himself. this may actually help him.

Name one great tennis player that had a kid that went on to be a great tennis player?

I´ve found this, but I don´t know if it´s true or not:

While Agassi and his partner Steffi Graf, the former world number one, eagerly await the arrival of their first child, Agassi should worry about his own career as history is not on his side.

Australian Evonne Goolagong may be the only mother to have won a Grand Slam in the Open era at Wimbledon in 1980 but since then only six men have managed to win a major title after experiencing the joys of fatherhood.

While three - Pat Cash, Andres Gomez and Petr Korda - were one- Slam wonders, multiple champions Boris Becker and Yevgeny Kafelnikov managed to add just one further Grand Slam title after becoming parents.

Jimmy Connors was the only player to successfully combine family life with playing on the tour, winning three of his eight majors after the birth of his son Brett in August 1979.

For the likes of John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg, the titles dried up as soon as they embraced the new additions to their family.

If it's a boy, ExFed's ego-trip will make him project his deficiencies into the kid and name him Clay Federer, and the kid will be handed over to Tio Toni as soon as right after his 1st birthday, to start all the necessary shaping and moulding in time.

The back problems started in November, didn't they? :aplot:

I was just thinking, during one of his oncourt interviews with Jim Courier at the Australian Open, Roger actually dropped a hint but nobody picked up on it:

Jim Courier asked Roger what he did during his holiday and he said he "lay on the beach, ate, slept, watched movies, watched the sunset, did nothing.....and you can guess what else" when the crowd started whistling.

This is pretty risque for a guy who's notoriously private and rarely talks about his life with Mirka. If she's expecting in the summer then she would have been in her first or second month at this time.

Roger Federer and his long-time girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec announced on Thursday that they are expecting their first child this summer.
"I have some really awesome news to share with all of you," the 27-year-old Swiss told his official website. "Mirka and I are excited to let you know that we will be parents this summer! Mirka is pregnant and we are so happy to be starting a family."

Federer, currently No. 2 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is competing at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California.

"This is a dream come true for us," said the 13-time Grand Slam champion. "We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well."

The couple met when they were both competitors at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Vavrinec reached a career-high No. 76 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings (Sept. 10, 2001).

As far as is know, they are 'just' boy & girlfriend. But I have no doubts that they have organized some kind of a legal structure, or perhaps even have gotten married in secret... and after all it's none of our business.

Many children in Europe have unmarried parents, it's no big deal with us at all anymore.

Many children in Europe have unmarried parents, it's no big deal with us at all anymore.

in France, half of the children are born while their parents are not married yet (many think that the French "flexibility" about these questions is one of the main reasons of the fact that France is the country which makes most babies in Europe together with Ireland)

The children often attend their parents' wedding, it's quite funny to see

This is a MAJOR development in the men's game. And, another challenge that Federer must now face. If, and I'm assuming by his interaction with children that he will, plays an active role in his child's life, then you could very well see Federer go the way of Sampras over the next year or so. Ask any parent: late nights with little or no sleep are the norm...and you WANT to be around your kids all the time. Travel becomes less appealing...home more important.

And that dip in the training as a result...that drop in the desire...the sting that comes from losses? The only athlete I've seen in an individual sport succeed at the highest level once they had children is Tiger Woods.

And, as evidenced by the rock on her finger, I'm assuming wedding plans will play a major role too.

well here's some news. Both me and my sister were born out of wedlock, my parents have never married and are still together after twenty-five years. On the other hand, it's a pragmatic move. "Hey, Mirka, I suck more and more. Let's make a baby, so that I could pull the wool over their eyes by saying I'm increasingly commited to my family and fatherhood, instead of letting them think I'm falling to pieces."

Nevertheless, a baby born into this world is always good news :)

Don't really care about Federer's personal life, but this should be good for his tennis. Federer seems to be very focused on the history of the sport and his achievements which place him under great mental pressure in finals against Nadal. Having a child will put things into perspective and allow him to downplay more his career.

please tell me this was a joke.

People from the Middle Ages don't have a sense of humour.

So very happy when I heard of the news :) Here's hoping the famous precise Swiss timing ensures the birth just after Wimby.

Just stop for a second.
Go for few steps away from the PC.
Find the nearest mirror in the place and take a long, long look.

well thats another kid who will never have to lift a finger to make a living. why work when your old man is worth $200 million.

There is a difference between not HAVING to lift a finger and lifting a finger cause you want to do something with your life. You think Fed or Rafa would have had to lift a finger had they not have become professional Tennis players? Definitely not. They both come from wealthy families, as most tennis players do. So just because your father has 200m doesn't mean his kid's gonna sit at home all day smoking pot.

No, not fat, she's been pregnant for quite a few years now.
