Dear Fans

I arrived in Indian Wells earlier this week and I am eager to get back out on court. My back is feeling much better and I am ready to go.

I also have some really awesome news to share with all of you: Mirka and I are excited to let you know that we will be parents this summer! Mirka is pregnant and we are so happy to be starting a family together. This is a dream come true for us. We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well.

Speak soon and thanks for all your continued support!

Roger

From RF.com. Though it deserved its own thread :woohoo:

Congrats Rog and Mirka!!!

Imagine how great it would be if the baby was born a day or two after Roger wins Wimbledon. :D

:secret:Girls, we better take maximum use of our remaining time now, as the baby might make the heavy fangirling a bit too inappropriate. Well, more inappropriate.

Oh no Maya. Fangirling Rog will never be inappropriate . I am sure Mirka doesn't mind at all , she has the insurance of a kid , so we all know he won't marry me anymore (:sobbing:), so we at least have the eye candy to cling onto (:hearts::p).

On a much more serious note, I don't care if its a boy or girl, as long as the baby is healthy and Rogi remains a happy, prosperous man. So happy for him (and Mirka too of course ;)).

Oh oh, the Agassi's and the Sampras' will have some competition in 5 years time. Gosh those junior leagues are going to be competitive. ;)

On a serious note, wow I am so glad for both Roger and Miroslava, may God bless both in this new stage of their lives.

Even if they all decide to play tennis, Agassi's kids will be on the decline as Roger's kid hits his peak.

I can't believe the amount of excitement and happiness that I feel for two people who other than on my tv screen are pretty much strangers for me.

So happy for him I was pretty much speechless the first few moment I found out about this lol.

I guess they're announcing it now because Mirka must be really showing now, cos the baby's due in summer. omg I can't wait for pint-sized Roger jr. to arrive in the world :D:D!

Aww, congrats to them both! Hope it all goes well & everyone turns out healthy & happy :)

On a selfish side (if I can be selfish about the future child of two people I don't actually know :p ) I hope it's a boy, just cos I prefer boys as kids & I want future Federers on the ATP tour...a girl would be nice later ;) Oh and I hope this just inspires Roger more, I know there haven't been too many fathers who've won slams but hopefully he'll use this as a big incentive & inspiration to push on for some fabulous tennis over the years :worship:

Anyhoo, congrats & hope it all goes swimmingly.

How long have the media been wishing for a baby Fed to be on the way  They won't bother asking him about how he feels losing to Nadal... it'll be "How's Mirka etc etc ... I've felt Roger has wanted children for some while - in spite of what he may have said in public. I'm very happy for them both - truly I am. They'll make great parents - be it boy or girl. Does anyone know exactly when the baby is due? Don't tell me ... Tuesday 23 June when I've got tickets to see him play at Wimbledon!! But I won't mind for something as endearing as this news.

I have mixed feelings about this announcement. Congrats are in order of course and hope they have a healthy baby. On the other hand, we may have seen the last of Roger's GS wins with USO 2008. I was hoping that he would get to 15 slams but that seems pretty hard now.

My life and focus completely changed with the birth of my first one and I unfortunately (or fortunately - depends on how you look at it) see that happening with Roger. He will probably have a nanny but he will definitely be distracted a lot more and at this level of competitiveness, that pretty much means a slow death to his game.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Hope they have a lot of fun with the baby - it is a lot of work but worth it.

This is just one way to look at it. It might also just be the other way round: being more relaxed and enjoying playing more, in stead of being so focussed on record breaking, getting to GOAT status, constantly having to deal with the immense pressure and expectations, and the like. It might just bring back a much needed relaxed attitude to the game.

We'll have to wait and see how it all pans out. It's different for everyone. :)

Being too relaxed means that he is going to lose. He needs some adrenaline to win the big ones and that is only going to flow if he has some level of stress and a strong belief that tennis is his only focus. Believe me, I would love for Roger to perfectly balance a new baby in his life with winning slams but my own experience and the experience of pro players who became dads tells a different story.

Anyway, I will continue watching his game like I have been doing for the past several years.

Hopefully Mirka will continue to have an uncomplicated pregnancy.

Mirka and Roger will surely be wonderful parents :)

And I just think you're too negative on this. Being more relaxed doesn't necessarily mean too relaxed.
And if you think that tennis isn't his main focus anymore... well would he have broken out into tears at losing the AO final, if he didn't mind it any longer? I highly doubt it. But well I'm a rather positive person, and I live by the rule 'it ain't over till it's over...' :)

Like I said it's different for all. I have indeed seen people lose their focus on things that were important to them before when they started having kids - but I've also seen the exact opposite happening, people finding new inspiration to finally get hold of their goals.

Anyway, I will continue watching his game like I have been doing for the past several years.

Of course! When Edberg called it quits I thought I'd never watch the game anymore... and look what happened thereafter.
Even if one thinks the current bunch plays boring tennis, once in a while there will be someone appearing on the scene again that does manage to attract our attention again.

Cheer up ;) You don't know how it's going to affect his career, so no need to be pessimistic about it all. Just wait and see.

I personally think it's great news. After all it is his life and he is really happy by the looks of things. If Rogi starts losing day in day out and doesn't win a title this year, then I think we could question and start speculating the reasons. But the truth is he hasn't played for 6 weeks. All I am saying is don't count the eggs before they've hatched (is that the saying btw ?), i.e. wait and see how it turns out and then judge. I am sure he will be fine, after all Roger is so passionate about Tennis, and getting a baby will not change his motivations of that I am sure. He has set himself a target of staying on the tour for as long as possible, and in the meantime his life has to continue.

Guys, please don't hang me for asking this but what does this pregnancy mean for Roger's tennis career? Would he take a paternity leave after birth? How would this affect his concentration on the court? I'd always thought Roger would retire from the tour before starting a family but I guess life doesn't always turn out the way you planned.

I feel like a bad fan because I'm not exactly over the moon about the news although I have not a single doubt in my mind that Roger is gonna make a fantastic father. I just hope this doesn't derail his ambition to get #14.

If my post offended anyone, I apologize in advance.

Not offended at all... but disagreeing with your fears.
Of course, we don't know which effect this will have on his career.
But to me 1) he now looks very happy, 2) if his tennis wasn't that important anymore, would he have broken down like he did in that AO trophy presentation?
Even more 3) this might well take away a lot of pressure on the whole GOAT, #1 and [CENSORED PLAYER NAME] -business he's had to deal with the past few months/years. Might bring back some enjoyment of his game!

So, I am positive that he WILL get that #14, and perhaps even more.

(you can quote this post of mine when he does - and even when he decides to call it quits within a few months, and I'll hang my head in shame for being such a terrible optimist! :D)

The way I see it is that Mirka will be the person mainly in charge of bringing up the child i.e. probably less travel around the world with Rog. She is older than him after all and Roger has time and time again stated that he wants to play on tour whilst he is well into his 30's (around 35, can't remember exactly). So by the time Roger retires, Mirka would be older than she would probably prefer to be a mum. At 30 now I think is the perfect age for her to be full of energy and for Baby Fed to grow up with a mother that is not toooo much older than him or her.

I can't see why it would derail his ambition, if anything it would give him more inspiration and he will certainly find the joy of the sort he has never felt before. Why not let him feel that happiness? I think a lot of people have overreacted pessimistically if I am honest, I don't feel its appropriate to be even judging him like that. The thing that saddens me is that people are actually still questioning his passion for tennis. His tears at the AO for both his wins and losses shows you how much it means to him and would take a super gigantic miracle to make Rogi hate what he has been all about for nearly all his life.

From what I have seen, Roger is a very happy man at the moment. And for that I am so thankful. Didn't think I'd see the sparkle in his eye back again this soon after that painful loss. It is easy to feel selfish about it all, but I believe Roger deserves to have a beautiful life off court as well. Tennis shouldn't mean the end of your own life, and your own life shouldn't mean the end of tennis. Same applies to every profession.

Roger is special, very special and he is not about to give up his motivations now.

Don't worry

i think from now until a couple of months after delivery of his baby he might be distracted from tennis... so it might affect his game during this period of time... but after that... he'll refocus and have new motivation to win more slams... that can only be a good thing...

Congratulations to them.

But I have the same worry as some here. I have no doubt about Roger's motivation about tennis at all. But, what I see is that Roger is a quite family type guy who attaches great importance to his family. He will absolutely make a great dad which only raises the possibility that he would put family/kids over tennis in the years to come. It might bring inspiration to him initially but in the long run, I will be very surprised that it won't be a distraction to his tennis and career.

I can see he is very happy about the coming baby. That's good to see. I want him to be happy, but call me selfish if you want, at the end of the day his life has nothing to do with me/us. As a fan, I want to watch him play tennis, and good tennis, and win more slams, and play for a long time. Anything that prevents that from happening can't be good news to me personally.

Of course, it's too early to judge what this change will bring to his career, but I just can't be happy now.

I'll leave you all with this quote:

“Nothing can ever demotivate me,” Federer said in preparation for his first tournament in six weeks, the BNP Paribas Open — where the desert has been a hospitable host, as three successive titles from 2004 testify. The Swiss has won 14 Masters events — a number that he insists will not become a grand-slam tournament bogey.

Night all :wavey:. Don't worry, take his word for it ;)

:haha: Roland!!

I seriously hope it's not one of those weird celebrity names, the ones that make you cringe, literally.

How about Roger? Seriously can't think of a better name if it's a boy

haha, yeah, no 'Cruz' or something the like. :help:
Well I wouldn't be all too surprised if they name him Robert, after Roger's dad, in case it's a boy. I'd like to see that, as Roger's dad is such a very nice person himself! :D

Ah... there's surely a part of me that understands your fears all too well, and I can only hope being right on my optimistic point-of-view right now. We just can't tell now, but the fact that he looks extremely happy right now just gives me good hope that he won't be leaving us soon.

I'll leave you all with this quote:

Night all :wavey:. Don't worry, take his word for it ;)

I'd like to... a lot. But Roger has his ways of fooling us all once in a while, hasn't he? Okay enough with the Doomsday Scenario. Sleep well! :D

Selfishly, I hope this doesn't mean that no. 14 is out of the question:lol:

Hee, I'm still over-the-moon about this news. As long as Roger and Mirka don't decide to call the kid 'Roland' as someone in GM suggested... good one, though. :o

Awww, great news for the couple. For some reason, I've always liked the name Raphael but imagine how it would be for the baby if he carries that name and the specter of 20 grand slams and counting.

Who cares about Roger in this situation? Imagine being Mirka. All of a sudden she's under all this pressure to deliver a child in front of the world from just being a gf trundling around behind him all these years.

Wowowow. Congratulations to Roger and Mirka! I'm sure Rog'll make a great dad.

I think it's only natural to step back and question how this might impact on his career. But I am happy for them. What news.

I am happy for both of them. At the end of the day a baby is far more important than any GS or any record. A baby fed in july or in august...that is exciting. I feel like an aunt...anxiously waiting for the big day.:lol:

I find it interesting that no one is throwing out girl's names. Personally, I kind of hope it will be a little girl~~because usually a little girl & her daddy have a special kind of relationship.
He is her hero for life!

A little boy could be under a lot of pressure to live up to his dad's achievements..

Mainly I hope there are no problems health wise for either the baby or Mirka......I am so very happy for them.

Tennis is only a game.
And I'll always be a fan......

Love and a relationship is what is really important in life!
And happiness~~~I love to see my hero happy. That's enough for me.
Just my opinion.:)

I thought the same, Luna, everyone seams to assume it will be a boy. :D I think a girl as their first child would be just lovely. Do you remember that photo of Roger hugging the little girl last year around USO time? :awww:

Awww, great news for the couple. For some reason, I've always liked the name Raphael but imagine how it would be for the baby if he carries that name and the specter of 20 grand slams and counting.

Oh I definitely agree about the name. I always thought the name Raphael is just beautiful, it sounds so angelic. Imagine, baby Raphael Federer, just too, too cute. :hearts: :awww:

I actually kind of want it to be girl, not that my opinion really matters or will have some kind of effect. Either way, I'm sure Roger will be a very doting and loving father, but it would be super adorable to see Roger with his little girl. As long as the baby is healthy, though.

Hopefully Mirka will continue to have an uncomplicated pregnancy.

We have to wait and see what this news will mean for Roger's career, but what do all tennisvictories and records count compared with a child who will accompany you for a whole life? :)

Mirka and Roger will surely be wonderful parents :)

Well said, Doris :yeah:

What do you mean? :D
I do love Faulkner Federer, but maybe a bit too dramatic?

I think maybe everyone's getting too far ahead of themselves jumping to the conclusion that it's a boy.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a girl.

And since we're all expressing out astro wishes, I'd like to see a hyperactive little Gemini to cause Roger lots of trouble and giggles.

But a Cancerian little girl would be beyond adorable. :awww: Especially since that way she'd have her Sun close to conjunct Roger's Mars, so she'd look up to him even more.
Either way I'm just happier about these news more and more with time. :D
