I worry about DC. :scared: I fear that the clay is going to ground to dust any momentum Nole could have taken into IW from Dubai. Hope I'm wrong.

Ajde Nole! Defend this Title! :rocker2:

I know, it's quite unfortunate, but I love how much he enjoys playing for Serbia. Brings a tear to my eye.

But thanks for the thread Lee! Hope your magic works in IW too!

As for DC - hope I don't upset people by saying this, but I've never liked it, and I wish he wasn't playing next week :o Yes, I'll cheer for him and for Serbia too of course, but I don't think they really have any chance at all against Spain away on clay (sorry Natasha and other Serbs here  ), and I'm kind of scared that a bad loss will ruin his new found confidence before he has to defend IW. I really just wish he'd get to The States quickly and start to prepare for that.

To defend his IW title, Nole has to beat:
1) the heat
2) jet lag (Europe to America)
3) change of surface
4) tiredness (if he plays well against Rafa in DC)
5) the pressure of being defending champ
6) his previous unpleasant memories playing in the US
7) the pressure from the rising Murray
8) probably 2 of the other members of Fantastic Four
9) the little demon in himself

The greater the opponent, the greater the win.
Ajde Noleeeeee!!!

The heat is not likely to be a problem. The average high temperature is around mid to high 20sC with record high at low 30s plus the humidity is low. It's the nicest time of the year, weatherwise, in the desert here.

Indian Wells is a 2 weeks event and top players have BYE to first round so won't play until Saturday, lots of time adjusting to jet lag and recover from tireness.

Rafa, Nole and Murray all subject to change of surface and for Federer, what surface as he hasn't played since AO

The crowd in Indian Wells is quite different from USO and he's pretty well liked there.

Of the top 4, Nole seems to be healthiest one (:tape:) for the time being so....

The worst is the little demon in himself, as Rose said. :p

Not upseting at all.;) I, on the other hand, think that a chance to play Nadal on his beloved clay, where he is an overwhelming favourite, is actually a nothing-to-lose situation that will charge Nole + the fact he's playing for his country. Everyone here is more than aware of our *slim* chances, so whatever they manage to come up with will be just fine.

The more Novak is confronted with Rafa, the better he'll learn how to beat him on clay. Besides, our team is very united, they all get along great, and I think Novak cherishes those moments. It'll do him good either way.

But if Serbia was to somehow magically win the tie.. That would propel Novak like a scorching, sharp rocket and he would arrive in IW with a huge grin on his face.

Totally agree with the bolded part. They do all seem like good friends and enjoy their time together. Guess I admit, part of it from me, is a very personal thing. I'm normally pretty ambivelent when Nole loses - I don't get  or upset, - I just think there will be another tournament next week....... but when it comes to Nadal, because of my own personal dislike :o, I do take his defeats very hard and get upset :tears: and I'm really not looking forward to another one.

Agree with all of this. Two years ago it was 100 to 104, but that's unusual. I think it will be in the 80's this year -- maybe jumping into the 90's.

I think Djokovic is liked at IW. The crowd loved him two years ago, and last year too. I don't know if they will be a little soured on him after the USO, but California is a lot different than New York. I think Djokovic isn't too fond of Indian Wells because it's more of a retirement community and there's no night life to speak of unless he goes to Palm Springs. But, maybe he'll appreciate the calm a little bit more this year. :)

Rome - Jitterbug
IW - Jelena78
AO - Jess

Hi Ellen :wavey: Nice to see you back here :D

I always thought IW was 8 hours behind the UK, - but I know the US has just had some kind of time change, so I think you may be right. However, I'm now confused totally, because on Nole's site they do a "what's the time at the current tournament" type feature, and it says there that it's currently 11.00am there (which would be only 5 hours behind us :o ) so I haven't a clue  I think they may have got that wrong though :o

Thanks. So the draw comes out at 8.00pm here and 9.00pm in Central Europe:) I have a "World Clock" site as one of my favourites on my PC, but although it gives the major US cities on it like New York, Los Angeles etc, it didn't give IW, and here I have to admit that my US geography is dreadful :o and I don't really know where IW is (apart from somewhere in the desert :o ) so I couldn't work it out :o

I don't think the draw is bad either. Could be problems, but shouldn't be if his game is on. I just hate to see possible Roddick drama in the quarters. Rafa in the SFs, just like last year. Definitely not what I would call a hard draw, though.

Thanks! I wore my ankle brace whole day. It's OK in the morning but by the end of the day, a little bit sore. I walked around a lot instead of watching matches. Most of the men's matches were first up in the morning and half were finished by the time I arrived. Then there were all WTA 2nd round quali. And I was too tired to wait for the last few men's match after the women's.

I usually write journal (guess today everyone call a blog) for my trips to IW. But right now my head is ready to explode so I will probably write down some notes for myself and write up something later.

Nole will take part in K-Swiss chairty event today.
http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS307037+05-Feb-2009+PRN20090205
The K-Swiss Desert Smash meshes the worlds of Hollywood celebrities and the
world's best professional tennis players. On the heels of the PNB Paribas
Open in neighboring Indian Wells, players scheduled to appear to date include
Novak Djokovic, Marat Safin, WTA Tour world number 4 Vera Zvonareva, Tommy
Haas, Australian Open Doubles Champions Mike & Bob Bryan, and 2008 Indian
Wells Finalist Mardy Fish.

Following a schedule similar to years past, this year's event will feature a
tennis pro-am tournament and another stellar pro-tennis exhibition played on
the gorgeous La Quinta tennis stadium which is free to the public. Capping
off a great day of tennis, the evening event is going to rock, literally. The
evening will kick off with a silent auction and cocktail party followed by
dinner and a special, private musical performance by a chart topping recording
artist.

And although he is dreadful in DC, his frustrations are not as much as before. Hopefully the sunny Djokovic finally re-emerges. And I hope Nole and the other Serbs will encourage each other more. I mean, the trio of Nole, Ana and Jelena should do that after the three are being criticized by the media together.

For prudence, I won't invest too much of my emotions into Nole defending the title. You know, Nole is like some risky shares of stock which can ride up high and then drop down low which drive investors mad (but create excitement too). But all the same, AJDE NOLE!

Yeah I wonder why. I was amazed when I look into the doubles draw.
Is it because there's a lot of money to earn in the doubles?

No I dont think that would be the reason cos isnt there usually peanuts for doubles players? Though I'd still happily take their pay over mine  Maybe it's cos IW is more spread out and hence playing doubles is okay as there is more time to recover for their singles matches? only my speculation

Interestingly though, Roger and Rafa can meet in the 2R if they both win their 1R doubles. Hard task for Roger though..he's playing the Bryan bros first up!!

IMO, a lot of top players didn't play that much lately due to illness, injuries etc., especially in outdoor conditions. So they want to adjust their games for singles, not for doubles itself. When changing conditions drastically or after taking a long-term break, singles players tend to play doubles more than usually they do.

Anyway I always think Nole needs to play some more doubles and take it a little bit more seriously for improving his net game.

 Well I was about to leave, but now I have to stay :) Miljan :inlove: Somehow I imagine that he wouldn't like American football - I know he's a big fan of what we Europeans call "real footbal" (what you call soccer), and often football fans here look at US football as some kind of "poor relation" - I hate both so I'm staying out of it

Well Sky only have rights to ATP matches - not WTA - so whenever there is a womens' match on one of the courts, they have to switch to another court, show a replay, or just talk :tape: Not that it bothers me because I hate watching WTA anyway  And sometimes their chat is quite informative and interesting - apart from when they get into their Murray worship  The guy played an atrocious game against a journeyman today, and they're carrying on as though he just beat Federer in a GS final or something

btw, I love Nole usually practice on the outside more open courts instead of what I called the "diva" courts. i.e. practice courts A-D. I onlly saw Roger practice in court A while Nadal in A and C. Ana, Jelena, Safina usually on B but Ana and Jelena also in the outermost open court. If you have tennis coverage, you will notice that have an overhead camera in the grass hill right next to practice court A.

Some players, like Dementieva, Gasquet and Simon were very confident with the integrity of fans  They left their racquet bags (with the credentials) right on the steps of practice courts where fans can sit and watch instead of the other side where there are benches and a low fence.

Yay I succeeded in waking up and watching him.
I laughed and laughed when he dropped his racket while serving! Comical stuff!
He seems to be quite sunny today, with occasional drizzles when in the 2nd set he squandered the lead of a break again.
He has to work with his mind when he's up a break, he's playing crap when he is leading. Too complacent?
Anyway he is through and I'm happy for it. Haas and Shuettler still battling each other.
Time for bed again. 6am here and birds are singing outside already. zzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....

:wavey: Everyone.

I wasn't really pleased with Novak's form today. He didn't seem to have the fire he has had in the past. But take heart, the crowd wasn't against him. Not really enthralled with him as the IW crowds are with past champions -- they do love the people who have won here, eg. Daniela Hantuchova is always a crowd favorite even though she's not a star anymore.

So, I'm wishing him well and keeping my fingers crossed.

I haven't seen him at all on the practice courts, but he may have been there. I don't patrol the practice courts. I'd rather be at matches.

So far so good.

He's still way too serious. (I keep wanting to type serial, as in that infamous South Park episode).

“Winning Dubai meant a lot for my confidence level and for my game overall,” he said. “I’ve changed my racquet. Probably that was the big reason for mental instability in certain stages at the start of the year. I was thinking about that more than my game. Luckily for me, it has changed.

“The quality is there. The game is there. The fitness is getting much better. It’s just a mental ability to play the best tennis. My confidence has raised in the last month and a half.

Djokovic served 2 aces. He hit 22 winners to Arguello’s 11, and made 28 unforced errors to the Argentine’s 13.
Nole converted on 4 of his 8 break point chances, while Arguello capitalised on both chances he had.
