even it seems stupid that he plays Sopot (clay inmitten hardcourt season), but its Marat, that he plays there "to keep a promise".:)

yes marat is the top seed, this would probably a tier 3 event at wta standard for the quality of the field, apart from marat the rest are mostly top 50+ the cut off being 114

BelgianWaffle

yes marat is the top seed

so do you think he will be under pressure to win this :o

PennyThePenguin
08-08-2004, 03:53 AM
i'd say he'll feel the pressure seeing as how everyone else will be in athens. but if he's playing to gain some confidence or build on his confidence...then...all the best for hiM!!!!!!!!

hmm, feel very mixed about this. but I'll not be negative, let's keep our finger crossed it'll turn out well ( a title??)! so I'm getting a gravel-avatar out again lol.

The field in Sopot is so weak, that Marat normally couldn`t lose :o
On the other side we don`t know if he will lose by default to leave to the olympics in time.

joeb_uk

and also i dont know what he is doing playing clay court champ before the olympics, not ideal preparation

I think ATP does'nt care about Marat...about his balls...about his recreminations...his change of mood...his injuries or his schedule

i read this on wtaworld, from people who were in Sopot-->

I've seen Dinara practising, and Vera Douchevina playing doubles qualifying today. It looks as though Nastya will be arriving tomorrow. Ooh, and I also got Marat's autograph

I mam here with Epigone so I saw Vera D. too :D . But she's not the one I like most. i saw Dinara as well and today going to press conference with Marat and Nastya.
But what was the best yesterday was seeing Marat train ing without the shirt :p God he is so hot live, and his face is even prettier in real. I really look foward to seeing nastya, hope she is fine. I am gonna ask her on this press conference if she really is thinking seriously about designing and why.

I have just came back from the conference. Wow it was incredible I have to say. Nastya and Marat were together on one table and people were just asking question one to Nastya and one to Marat. I am working on transcript now hope will do it soon. But have to say I didn't expect Nastya is so easy going, she was laughing at Marat a lot and it was very cool. i wish you all couldn't see that. By the way Nastya looks great live. Off court, I will have pics from this. More later.

Safin Looking Good

Marat Safin did not disappoint the crowd gathered at the central court this evening. The number 1 seed of the Idea Prokom Open tournament overcame the Spaniard Galo Blanco 7:5, 6:2 in the first round. The Russian played very well, especially in the second set relying on his powerful backhands and lightning fast serve. He was however a bit nonchalant at times, missing a few simple "put-aways". That's where the firs set score came from. He broke his opponent's serve to go up 4:2 and should have easily held his serve, but at 5:3, 40:30 he got impatient and over-hit a couple of balls and the score board read 5:5. At this moment Safin stopped fooling around and really got to work. After that, Blanco didn't have much to say in the remaining games of the match. As seems to be the custom at clay court tournaments, a lot of Spanish players, who are usually really good on this surface appear. That is why after beating one Spaniard in the first round, Safin has to deal with another in the second. He will face the winner of the match Marc Lopez - Oscar Hernandez. Marat seems to know how to handle their game though. Small wonder since he used to live and practice in Spain for many years.

thats the typical thing in marats "should have been 6-1 6-2" matches... no match without the stupid mistakes that costs him the score.

SOPOT, Poland (AP) -- French Open champion Anastasia Myskina left the Idea Prokom Open without explanation before her semifinal Friday, forfeiting her match against Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic.

Myskina will explain her decision at a news conference Saturday, the Polish news agency PAP said. The match featuring the top-seeded Russian eventually was washed out along with the entire day's program.

Tournament officials could not be reached for comment, but Myskina was not listed on the official schedule for the women's semifinals Saturday.

The other semifinal pits ninth-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy against Marta Domachowska of Poland. The men's quarterfinals also were postponed.

but hopes aren't high. the singapore contingent usually aims to just improve their personal marks or the national mark in swimming and athletics.

as for badminton...we have high hopes for ronald and lili....but they somehow BOTH managed to draw the world no.1s in the first round. so..... sigh.....i hope they put up a good fight though. they both play on saturday.

and table tennis....we got 4th in the womens singles in sydney. hopefully they can go one better!!!

No.1 seed Anastasia Myskina withdrew from tournament IPO 2004 because of a light shoulder injury, confirmed by a supervisor and a doctor.
With a possibility to play 2 matches in Saturday a player won't risk a serious injury in perspective to play match in Athens on Sunday or Monday.
She thanks to all for a nice time in Sopot and promise to be back in 2005.
