RAFA IS CHOSEN TO PLAY AT THE DAVIS CUP TIE AGAINST SERBIA

22nd of February

Rafa Nadal, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, Feliciano López and Nicolás Almagro (first reserve) have been chosen as the team that will represent Spain in the first round of the Davis Cup against Serbia from the 6th to the 8th of March in Benidorm.

The Spanish Armada is scheduled to travel to Beridorm on Sunday the 1st of March to start training at the stadium that has been put in place at the "Terra Mítica" park.

“I consider this team to be capable of winning”, was the statement that Albert Costa, the new Spanish Davis Cup Capitan gave at a press conference on Saturday after revealing the complete list of players that he’s chosen to play at next month’s tie.

Serbia is “a very difficult opponent that no-one wants to play in the first round. They are a very complete team, they have the number 3 player in the world, Novak Djokovic, then Janko Tipsarevic, a dangerous but equally irregular player; Nenad Zimonjic, best doubles player in the world at the moment; and Vicktor Troiki who is still in progress. Add to that the fact that they tend to get better when they represent their own country”, completed Costa.

The good news is that "we will have the courts available to us beforehand and therefore that will allow us to prepare ourselves in advance".

In regards to Rafa, he continues to be at home in Mallorca resting his knee, just like his doctor recommended. As usual, he is happy to be part of the Davis Cup team again and will do everything in his power to help his team win next month.

Vamos España!

I don't understand why Nole didn't throw himself into the South American swing of clay tournaments this year ahead of this tie. Or is he really not as into DC as he would like his rah-rah compatriots to believe?

Nole is a better hard court player than a clay court player. Also, the European hard court season is closer to home. He should not change his schedule just because this tie will play on clay.

And look at Nadal, even he's a better clay court player, he played the European hard court instead of SA clay court before this tie.

It's a tough situation. Though there are clay events, this part of the year is seen as the early hard court season. I think most people would think he was crazy if he had played the clay swing since the "heavy hitters" of the tour are playing on hard and his best results are on hard. If you look at the teams, only Robredo and Almagro, who's an alternate, have been playing on clay. It sucks that he has to go from hard to clay to hard so fast. But, Nole is a good clay court player and I don't think he should have changed his entire schedule to fit one weekend. Hopefully, the practice during the week will make the transition easier.

Nole is no slouch on clay. What he needs is sufficient match practice on the surface, without which he might as well recuse himself from the tie instead of worsening his h2h record against Nadal.

You do know that the Spaniard has a claycourt in his own backyard, right? I mean, literally "own backyard", not just "round the corner at the local tennis club" backyard.

Oh, also Venus is playing in South America after Dubai...think it's cos she's serious about finally filling that gap in her GS resume. Really, who cares what the other top players are doing if you have your own holy grail to pursue?

The problem with countering Nadal on clay is he, again literally, grew up on the dirt. But Nole going in "cold" on the surface while Nadal has had all this "recuperative" time to "get used to" a court that he already feels completely at home on, hah, literally, is a mistake of lamb-to-slaughter proportions.

Do excuse my excessive use of the word. Been watching too much Jaime Oliver, I guess. (Slaps self silly.)

This sounds selfish, but to me his own career is much more important than DC or something.
(except Olympics which is a more rare, short-term, international sporting event)
Even any other Serb player doesn't play on clay for DC, then why Nole has to do?
And I'm too skeptical to want to mess up his schedule for it.

Anyway I expect he shows extraordinary and passionate performance in the toughest situation.
Impossible is Nothing. :p

Sorry if I'm not allowing this lifeless equine a decent burial...

Nadal has nothing left to prove on clay. With his eye on the US Open to complete the real Grand Slam, he should and will play all the big and not-so-big hardcourt events to give himself the edge come September. Federer would do the same with clay except that he probably knows that still wouldn't be enough with Nadal in his way at FO, besides which, he's got #14 to worry about that is far more likely to come on grass or hard.

The Spaniard really has all the aces up his sleeve vis-a-vis the other guys. Except actual tennis talent, of course...

I agree Hana. I'm not a huge DC fan at all :o and have always defended Roger when he put his own career ahead of DC in the past. These guys only have a short and finite career. and injury could end it at any time. So when they play as much as the top players, they must look after themselves imo.

It's a pity Serbia and Spain have to play first round.....I love both teams....
I think Spain will win easy...and I hope Nole won't lose too much to Nadal (and win the other tie)
I'm thinking along this line: Nole doesn't seem to have much hot passion/ mojo/ magic/ whatever recently. Being a big patriot, he could regain some of that by devoting to Serbia. I hope this can be the turning point of this season!

The official team nominations for all the world group ties were announced today. The Serbia-Spain tie page was updated.

Spain has never met Serbia in Davis Cup, although it did play against the former Yugoslavia on eight occasions, winning six.
Spain won its third Davis Cup title last year, defeating Argentina in the final.
After both of its previous victories, Spain lost in the opening round of the following year's competition.
Serbia played in the World Group for the first time last year, losing to Russia but then defeating Slovak Republic in the play-offs to retain its status.

A sign of hope? Should make absolutely no difference, but hey, Spain did win all of three titles in Olympic years, which some people pointed to as a sign it would win in 2008.

Thanks. I don't understand a word of what he's saying in the video but I could listen to him for hours  So the google translator told me they couldn't practice outside because of rain and the atmosphere in the team is good? It does seem to translate Serbian better than Latvian though, but I still don't trust that thing :p

How is Troicki doing lately btw? Are they going to prefer him to play the singles in stead of Tipsy?

I came to MTF for more news about Ernests because he didn't have an official website etc. Because I was a newbie on MTF I prefered to stay there in my little group in stead of jumping into the ocean and meet fans of other favourites of mine ;) (I'm a Rafa fan and I tried that forum first :tape: I didn't like it so I ran back to Ernie's board and didn't leave it for a while :rolls:).

I'm afraid I won't get coverage of the tie. I can watch Belgium-Poland, Czech Rep-France (which makes me a bit happy too), GB-Ukraine but no Spain-Serbia :sobbing: I looked for flights to Benidorm though, just to dream a bit... ;)

Yes - I totally understand. Big Forums like this can be pretty intimidating at first, and I always find it best to lurk for a long while before posting, just to get a "feel" for the place. I don't really ever go to Ernie's Forum so I don't know much about it, - but I imagine it's quite a peaceful, friendly, welcoming place. Most of the Player Forums here are to be honest - I lurk in a few (Simon's and Gaudio's for example) and they're mostly just like-minded people supporting their player and sharing their common interests. About the other place you mention :tape: Let's just say it has a bit of a reputation so I'm not surprised you didn't like it :o Each to their own though I guess  :)

ESPN article previewing the tie, which focuses on the daunting task Serbia is facing.

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/columns/story?columnist=tandon_kamakshi&page=Spain-Serbia

Vanquishing Nadal a daunting task
By Kamakshi Tandon

Of all the spectacular records Rafael Nadal holds, one of the most staggering yet least known is this: He has never lost a best-of-five-sets match on clay.

Yes, never. Not in 43 career matches, including four straight French Open victories, several Davis Cup ties and -- until 2007 -- finals of Masters events as well as selected other events like Barcelona and Stuttgart.

That immaculate record will be on the line again this week as Spain begins its Davis Cup defense on clay at home in the coastal city of Benidorm. Nadal will be on the squad, having recovered from a knee tendon problem that kept him out of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships last week.

He spent some of his unscheduled time off indulging his other sporting passion, soccer. Nadal was honored by the Mallorcan soccer team during a Spanish league match and also attended a Real Madrid game against Liverpool last week.

The break also allowed Nadal to be one of the first to arrive in Benidorm for the tie. "I feel very well, eager to defend my country," he said after a team training session over the weekend. "The court is perfect."

That will be a relief for new team captain Albert Costa, who is hoping to make a successful debut despite being handed a very tricky opener against Serbia.

After Roger Federer pulled out of Switzerland's tie against the United States, Spain versus Serbia became easily the biggest matchup of the first round. The nation that wins this weekend will be the heavy favorite to go all the way to December's final.

The Spanish Armada has not lost a home tie in nearly a decade, and showed its depth and versatility last year by winning the final on indoor hard courts against Argentina despite the absence of an injured Nadal.

Fernando Verdasco, the hero of that tie, is missing this time around, but Spain still has a strong lineup behind the returning Nadal: David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez. Ferrer or Robredo is likely to fill the second singles spot, and Lopez will bring his attacking skills to the doubles.

But with world No. 3 Novak Djokovic and doubles No. 4 Nenad Zimonjic, Serbia is one of the few nations that can hope to challenge the Armada. The Spaniards are aware their status as favorites depends heavily on two things: home-court advantage and the presence of Nadal.

The Serbs know it, too. Janko Tipsarevic, currently the third-ranked Serbian in singles behind Victor Troiki, sees Spain having a "60-40" or "70-30" chance thanks largely to Nadal's formidable clay record. "It is a great advantage, especially at home with 15,000 or 16,000 fans," Tipsarevic told DPA. "But if Nadal does not play, it makes a big, big difference.

"Because then we should win [Djokovic's] two singles ... and though I don't want to put pressure on Novak, [we] are the slight favorites against any doubles team put up by Spain."

But overall, percentage calculations will be less relevant to Serbia's fortunes than the physical condition of Djokovic, who is just as vital to his team as Nadal is to the Spanish side.

Winning the title in Dubai last week was a significant mental boost for Djokovic, but he was huffing and puffing during the final and had only one day off at home before having to fly to Spain for the tie. Considered suspect early in his career, his stamina re-emerged as an issue this year after he retired during his Australian Open quarterfinal against Andy Roddick because of the heat.

Coincidentally, Djokovic's opponent in the Dubai final was none other than Ferrer, but Djokovic is not expecting a repeat of last week's easy victory if the two meet again this weekend.

"David's going to be favorite in that match, to be honest, if we play against each other," said Djokovic in Dubai.

He might have been bluffing -- Tipsarevic would think so -- but it shows just what Serbia is up against: If Nadal wins his first match, as expected, a loss from Djokovic would put the Serbs down 2-0 right off the bat. (In Davis Cup ties, the top player from each team meets the second-ranked player from the opposing team in Friday's opening singles. If the contest is still alive after Saturday's doubles, the top players on each team face each other in the first match on Sunday, followed by the second-ranked players.)

When the Davis Cup draw was made last fall, Djokovic's father raised eyebrows with his farfetched accusation that things had been rigged against Serbia to prevent the young nation from making its mark in the competition.

Djokovic has stayed away from such discussions, but the pugnaciously patriotic Serb is also determined not to be daunted by the task at hand. "One thing is for sure, we are not going there to just play some good tennis," he said. "I think we have quite a young team, which can really challenge every team in the world and on every surface."

Neutral observers will be hoping that the contest stays alive until the reverse singles on Sunday, when Nadal and Djokovic could face each other in what would be the highlight of the tie.

Nadal has won 10 of their 14 meetings, including two wins on clay at Hamburg and the French Open last year that seemed to drain the Serb's energy for months afterward.

Djokovic may want to think about the curious fact that he shares a name with the only player ever to have beaten Nadal in a Davis Cup singles match: Czech Jiri Novak, who subdued the Spaniard on a fast carpet court in 2004.

But that was very early in Nadal's career. He had yet to turn 18 and had yet to play a Davis Cup match. In fact, he had yet to even play a best-of-five match on clay.

Djokovic will not want to think about what has happened since.

If Nole wins against Ferru (even with the bad clay-H2H :tape:), Janko will proceed to loose from Rafa. That would make it 1-1, on Friday. Hopefully, if Robredo/Flo have no rhythm as a team, Nole/Ziki can pull it off, which would make it 2-1. Nole will loose to Rafa on Sunday, making it 2-2. And the decider? Ferru/Tipsy  Which may just be 50-50

I think the Serbian captain is just being tactical putting Nole in the doubles. I think that if Nole can beat Ferrer on Fri, Victor will probably replace him to play doubles so as to give Nole time to rest for Sunday. However, if Ferrer beats Nole on Fri (it's possible, Ferrer leads Nole on clay), then maybe Nole will play doubles. Nole doesn't have a good record in doubles, but still he's the one who can control the ball better and he'll pump up to save the tie better. Nole and Zimonjic won the doubles tie against Russia, right?

- “Nadal can’t have wanted this kind of surface. The court is concrete underneath the clay, it’s extremely hard and the ball bounces really high. The clay itself slows it down a bit, but the balls are also hard and quick. This tie will certainly not be a typical clay-court encounter,” Obradovic speaks his mind.

- “They have so far played out the pair of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, but the latter is now injured, so there will be some changes. We have the standard lineup with Zimonjic and Djokovic, who have proved they fit together perfectly. However, if Novak has an exhausting encounter beforehand in the singles, we may opt to substitute him with either Tipsarevic or Troicki,” says Obradovic.

Matches will not be played on Friday!!?!

Part of the stands fell on the court...and everything is delayed at least for 1 day. That's what I heard 5 minutes ago.

Here's a report from bbc sport: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7924062.stm

Spain tie suspended after gales

The first day of Spain's Davis Cup tie against Serbia was postponed after strong winds damaged the purpose-built stadium in Benidorm.

Gusts of wind blew off some rows of seats and affected the whole stability of the 16,000-seat stadium, said the International Tennis Federation.

A decision will be made at 1000 GMT on whether the tie can be pushed back one day and played from Saturday to Monday.

kalisita
03-05-2009, 11:14 PM
It sounds like the stadium was hastily constructed. I think they were still building it a couple of days ago. If they don't finish until Monday, then that gives even less time to recover before IW. But, who knows how long it'll take to repair the stadium. I believe it's supposed to be very windy tomorrow as well.

ITF may want to check with a Feng Shui master because anything that may go wrong, went wrong. :tape:

 It has been a very news worthy DC weekend. And the vast majority of the news hasn't exactly been positive. :tape:

The ITF officials on site will meet with the teams tomorrow to decide whether to push the tie back to Monday or play doubles and reverse singles on Sunday.

From tennis.com ticker: http://tennis.com/news/ticker.aspx
The Davis Cup tie between Spain and Serbia will not begin on Friday as scheduled after heavy winds overnight made the stadium unfit for use. Some of the stands have been blown away and the "whole stability" of the structure has been affected, said an ITF spokesperson.

The opening singles matches, David Ferrer vs. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal vs. Janko Tipsarevic, will take place on Saturday. Officials and team members will meet on Friday to decide whether to hold both the doubles and reverse singles on Sunday, or extend the tie by one day and play the doubles on Sunday and the reverse singles on Monday.

Djokovic is slated to play both singles and doubles for Serbia, meaning that he could have to play two matches in one day if the doubles and reverse singles were both held on Sunday.

Why am I not surprised about the badly-built stadium? Some friends of mine went to see Spain v Argentina DC semi final a few years ago. The Davis Cup is cursed:

Israel and Sweden are playing in an empty arena with only cops watching inside and lots of protestors outside.
Spain and Serbia are playing in a ready-to-collapse stadium under hurricane like weather. Maybe they are going to play in an empty arena too. I suppose the arena is safer not having to bear the weight of like 40000 spectators? Or they should move into an indoor stadium immediately to get rid of bad weather and fragile stadium. But then that would immediately favor the Serbs and Spain might not want it.
In addition to all these ill news, we have an ill Andy Murray, injured Roger Federer, and Nalbandian, Del Potro, Soderling, whatever pulling out. USA got to be cursing about Fed's absence in what would originally be an epic tie already. More cursing to come for other ties?

That stand is ridiculous - looks totally unsafe for the spectators. They should move the tie indoors surely  Or perhaps do a Sweden/Israel, and play it with no spectators?

Seems the lovely Mr. Obradovic is not so happy - this is from Nole's official webaite:-

We’re spending more times at the meetings than with the players. Everything that has been happening around this match is unexpected. First we didn’t have enough training because of the weather conditions, and now the safety of audience and players is endangered not because of the courts but because of the stands, and the start of the match is delayed. Niki Pilic hasn’t experienced this in his career. We’ll see at the meeting whether we can use training grounds and share the additional terms with the Spaniards, and then try to find clay court somewhere near Benidorm, so we can work undisturbed. All this has been disrupting our preparation for the tie, but that’s tennis, that’s sport.

Oh god. I dont understand why they had to build a new stadium for the tie?? I thought Spain was all about the clay courts...so couldnt they have just used one of the million clay courts available in the country?? This really sucks for the players who have to rush to IW afterwards! They would have no time to readjust to hard courts and different weather conditions. Ugh.

The Spanish tennis association RFET announced at midnight local time that play for Friday would not take place, and on Friday morning officials from the RFET and their technical advisers held a news conference in which they said continuing strong winds were preventing their technical staff starting repair work. This in turn prevents any definitive announcement about play for the rest of the weekend, although practice schedules for Friday afternoon on the practice court at the Terra Mitica park were announced.

The weather forecast for the day does envisage the winds easing, and organisers are hopeful that repair work can begin in the early afternoon.

Davis Cup rules allow for play on up to five days, so play on Monday or even Tuesday is theoretically possible. The rules also allow for a certain amount of flexibility of scheduling, so three matches on Saturday or Sunday are possible, although with Novak Djokovic due to play in three matches and daylight only until just after six o’clock in the evening, it seems unlikely that this will happen.
I don't like the option of three matches on one day at first then even it seems impossible. :spit:

I read somewhere it's picked by the players.

My understanding is that the players, specifically Nadal and Ferrer, lobbied for Benidorm, but it's ultimately the Federation's decision. It certainly didn't have a problem going against the players wishes when it chose Madrid for the SF against the US last year. Though, with all the trouble between the Federation, or its' old president at least, it may have wanted to be as appeasing as possible this time around.

Sorry missed the sarcasm there as I haven't had my first cup of coffee in the morning.

It's in Spanish and basically says that they expect the tie to begin tomorrow at 10 am. A meeting will be held today at 3 pm to decide when they'll play the doubles and reverse singles. The stadium should be fine, but a final inspection of it will take place tomorrow at 8 am, which is when the final decision of whether they'll play will be made. They have until Tuesday to complete the tie. The tie will be rescheduled for a later date in Spain if it can't be completed by Tuesday.

For Europeans following US-Swiss tie, time change over the weekend here in US so Sunday's match, spring forward an hour.

Tipsarevic warns of dangers of reading

DPA , BENIDORM, SPAIN
Friday, Mar 06, 2009, Page 19
Reading a lot can be dangerous, and being too smart can lead a person to unhappiness: that is why Serb tennis player-cum-intellectual Janko Tipsarevic hit the brakes.

“I realized that I was reading too much, starting to doubt myself, life, my profession and tennis. I stopped a bit,” Tipsarevic said in an interview ahead of this weekend’s Davis Cup tie against Spain.

“That was a time in my life in which I was really crazy over reading books. I still read many, but not quite that many,” he says.

“But I don’t want to make a big fuss of this or say that I am so deep, or a philosopher. That is a part of my life, something I like doing, like others like Play Station,” Tipsarevic says.

He got into reading Nietzsche, Kant and other philosophers by following the example of his mother.

“She started to read these books, which end up driving you a little mad ... Yes, she suffered a bit,” he says.

“Anyone who reads philosophy knows the word means ‘the search for truth.’ Many of those philosophers had painful and unpleasant lives because they searched for truth. And the truth, in most books, is nothing, it’s depressing,” Tipsarevic says.

“You start to wonder why you are doing this, why you pay US$1,000 for a plane ticket. Am I happy? All those questions,” he says.

Tipsarevic is now sure that “thinking too much is not the answer.”

“Of course I would not rather be stupid. But they say being stupid is a sort of blessing, because you don’t know anything else, you don’t want anything else and you don’t need anything else,” he says.

“I was taking books too seriously,” Tipsarevic explains. “Now I am a little bit older than I was then, and I understand that you should never, ever, no matter how right the author is, read a book and completely change your life.”

“In my opinion, you should always take small things from a book to change life, and not let the book have a 100 percent influence on your life,” he says.

Some news..

One of the most eagerly awaited ties of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round will get under way on Saturday morning, when Spain’s David Ferrer takes on Novak Djokovic. That is subject to an early morning inspection by safety authorities at the 14,000-seater temporary stadium in the Terra Mitica theme park on the edge of Benidorm, an inspection that will hopefully be the last act in a two day series of extraordinary events.

Players, organisers and spectators were left frustrated on Friday afternoon, as glorious sunshine and gentle breezes that would have been perfect for tennis were instead used by engineers to repair damage to the stadium wrought by record strong winds on Thursday afternoon and evening. Wind speeds reached 89 km/h (55mph) late on Thursday, causing damage to some of the upper tiers of the arena.

The Spanish tennis association RFET had announced at midnight local time on Thursday night that play scheduled for Friday would not take place. On Friday morning officials and journalists arrived to find seats lying strewn around the ground, some in pieces after falls from considerable heights. The stadium was a complete no-go area until lunchtime.

Officials from the RFET and their technical advisers held a news conference in which they said continuing strong winds were preventing their technical staff starting repair work. That work began in the middle of the day, and early inspections made it clear that play could, in all probability, begin on Saturday morning. The referee, Soeren Friemel, later announced that play would begin at 10 o’clock local time on Saturday, an hour earlier than the scheduled start time for Friday, subject to an 8am safety inspection.

By starting early, organisers are clearly hoping to keep open the option of getting the tie completed in two days. Spain’s captain Albert Costa said: “The players want to finish on Sunday because they have to leave for Indian Wells, but we’ll see. It depends how the tie goes, how long the matches are, and who plays on what days. Anything can happen as we can see!”

The crucial figure in this is Novak Dokovic. He is due to play three matches, but he is at least first on court against Ferrer, so if his match is quick, he might be in a position to start the doubles. The only rule amendment for these circumstances is that captains will need to notify the referee of any changes to their doubles teams 10 minutes after the end of the second singles, not an hour before the doubles as is usual.

The weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday is generally good, which will be a relief to more than just Spain’s tennis community as Benidorm is not the only part of Spain suffering abnormal conditions. The capital Madrid has been under snow this week, and the winds have caused other damage along the coast, including blowing the gangway off a moored luxury cruise liner.

Davis Cup rules allow for play on up to five days, so action on Monday or even Tuesday is theoretically possible. In addition, the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells doesn’t start until the middle of the week, so there is less pressure for the players to be on a plane than in most tour weeks. ( And what about the time difference??)

The match referee Soeren Friemel, who took part in the RFET’s news conference, said: “This is not about the wind being too strong for tennis. In tennis terms we could play. It is about safety of spectators and all concerned. The Spanish federation has done a great job in organising the tie, and the players are all happy with the court. These are exceptional weather conditions that could not have been predicted.”

The RFET has twice used 14,000-seater stadiums like this one which are built from scratch on a base of scaffolding. It did it first for the 2000 semifinal in Santander against the USA, and for the 2003 semifinal in Malaga versus Argentina

Thanks for the info Ellen. So guess that's a 9.00am start for us in the UK  Not too bad I suppose, though I probably ought to get up at 8.00am and check the tie is actually going to go ahead first. If not - just go back to  for a couple of hours :)

Some news..

Thanks

( And what about the time difference??)

Indian Wells is about 8 hours behind so it's not too bad. Someone mentioned before that all Spanish players have first round bye so they won't play at least until Saturday. Serbs are mostly affected as Janko and Viktor both need to play first round, so as Nenad for doubles.

Hi :wavey: Some people like tennis and appreciate all (most) of the players, and some people just follow tennis to hate particular players.
