OK - I know it's not definate yet that David will be 100% fit to play in Athens this year, but thought it was still a good time to start an Olympics thread for news, articles etc. This article comes from the Cordoban newspaper "La Voz del Interior" today, 5th August 2004. Apologies for my translation:-

With Guillermo Coria injured in his right shoulder and already unable to make the Olympic Team, attention in the tennis world has turned to David Nalbandian, who himself has an injury to his elbow,
and will go to Athens having played just one match (against Mikhail Youzhny in the Toronto Masters) in the last 61 days. After his defeat in Canada, the World Number 5 travelled to Miami where he made his
physical recovery and started to play again yesterday. His close circle commented that the withdrawal from Cincinnati this week was
not due just to a simple precaution so as to be in form for the Olympic Games, and it is only today that the 22-year-old will pick up a racquet for the first time. He will travel from Miami to Athens
between Monday and Tuesday, accompanied by his Coach Eduardo Infantino and his brother Javier. They are determined not to miss the opening ceremony. So how will the man from Unquillo respond to the
fast Greek surface? It is an unknown quantity. Since the semifinal he lost to Gastón Gaudio at Roland Garros on clay, he has played only once - against Youzhny. Anyway it is necessary to go back in the
2004 calendar to see what happened to Nalbandian after his return to the circuit from injury. On 6th February he played in the Davis Cup in Morocco against Hicham Arazi who had to retire through injury, but even then everything was complicated for David because of a twisted right ankle which occured while he trained in Agadir. That injury
marginalised him by almost a month, and he returned in Dubai (still in pain) and lost in his debut. Again he was out of the circuit for a
month, although his return was succcessful as he reached the quarterfinals in the Masters Series of Monte Carlo before losing to Coria.

Later, at Roland Garros, het had a small intercostal tear and could not go on to play at Wimbledon. And although he felt he could return in Toronto, he lost in a match were he had held a 4-1 final set
advantage. On the injuries suffered by his pupil and by others on the circuit, Eduardo Infantino said that "One of the problems is that
they are changing their type and each one presents/displays different
characteristics. As far as the circuit is concerned, in the last two years the balls are heavier and the fields slower. And also there is the matter of a demanding calendar with, for example, two Masters
Series following each other". Infantino added that "it is necessary to make things stronger and more organised on the circuit" and he
explained: "Mainly it is down to the individual characteristics of each player. The circuit is complicated by the amount of matches they
have to play, and it's always necessary to adapt to new techniques and have new objectives. We, the Coaches, are trying to obtain the right balance".

While Nalbandian has told him that his latest injury is not severe, Alberto Mancini, captain for the Olympic Games, gave his point of view on the continuous injuries of the players. "At the moment the
system of competition forces people to play too much and for too long and for that reason, many players suffer many injuries, Although some have a greater propensity according to then than others", Luli
aid. And because of these doubts, candles are lit and prayers are
said daily.

Well, apparently Coria will announce today if he can go or not to the
Olympics. In the meantime Mancini already explain that if he doesn't
make it Zabaleta will replace him in singles and doubles. Since Coria
and David got a WC to play, they can't change the team, so all he can
do is replace Coria with Zabaleta.
The bad news is that they never played together and will not have any
practise till Athens.

On David's side, everything's OK
Nalbandian started training again in Miami yesterdayt and will go to
Greece on Tuesday.
http://www.ole.clarin.com/jsp/v3/pagina.jsp?pagId=808454

While on Coria's side the situation is not the best, David
Nalbandian practised yesterday for the first time in Miami, after
quitting in Cinicnnati because of some pains in the right elbow, a
typic pain that appears after being so long without practise. The
Unquillense didn't want to risk his participation in Athens and even
lost a great possibility of getting a place for the Houston Masters.
Nalbandian is 9 in the Champion's Race and Lleyton Hewitt and Marat
Safin, two of his direct rivals, are facing each other in the QF of
the Master Series. In a chat with El Sello, of TyC Sports, Nalbandian
assured that his participation in the Masters was a fact.

David, his coach Eduardo Infantino and his PT Jorge Trevisan will go
to Greece next tuesday. The bad thing is that Nalbandian only played
1 match-the defeat against Mikhail Youzhny in Toronto-after losing in
SF of RG against Gaudio. There's a good reference though: in october,
after 49 days without playing, he beat Roddick and Henman in Basel. A
nice comeback.

Ok, Coria is officially out and Zabaleta in. He'll play doubles with David and also singles. The bad news is that gaudio is in doubt cause he got injured in Cincinnati. He'll decide what to do in a few hours. His replacements can be Calleri or Cañas.

So sorry to hear about Gaston - it would have meant so much to him to play for his country - especially as he is one of the older players and may not get another chance in 4 years time. Hope he gets well soon. At the same time I am pleased for Calleri though - and it looks like he and David will now play doubles together in Athens. This is an article from La nacion this morning:-

The mens' team that will travel to Athens next Tuesday will be made up of David Nalbandian (who is currently in the United States), Juan Ignacio Chela, Mariano Zabaleta (who will play instead of Coria), Agustin Calleri and the doubles specialists Gastón Etlis and Martín Rodriguez. . Although Mancini has not given confirmation yet, is probable that, due to all these changes, the second doubles' pair will be the Cordoban pair of Nalbandian and Calleri. Nalbandian and Calleri played together last year, in Montreal and Long Island, on cement which is the same surface as the Olympic Games. After his calling to the Team, Calleri, will play in Athens after two months of inactivity due to a leg injury he received at Roland Garros, said that he was sorry it Gaudio was injured. "It is such a sad thing that has happened to Gastón" he said. "But to be in the Games will allow me to fulfill a dream, an opportunity that I can't let pass me by".

I really like this doubles pairing - I think they could do well :)

Just a small piece from Clarins newspaper this morning - 8th August:-

Nalbandian in the Running

"Everything is going well and David's training is going according to
plan. First thing on Tuesday morning he will go to Athens", says his
brother Darío Nalbandian. Dario was clearing up a rumour that came
from Greece, saying that the Number 5 seed may not be able to play in
the Olympics. David pulled out of the tournament in Cincinnati this
week due to an elbow injury, but is currently training in Miami with
his other brother Javier, and Coach Eduardo Infantino. Unfortunately
Argentina have already lost two members of their Olympic Team -
Guillermo Coria (right shoulder) and Gastón Gaudio (heel injury).

No I know there won't be much TV coverage - but I'll be at work through most of the matches anyway - so guess live scoring will have to do. As for the El Gordo thing - afraid I have to agree! I haven't personally seen David for about 6 weeks now, - but people who have, are all telling me how heavy he has become  Reckon he needs some of your high altitude training - and fast!

I know what it's like and if I am not careful I can get to the El Gordo phase myself, something about us stocky individuals :) . Yes, I am serious about that high altitude physical base training, then again whenever I have needed to shed it's come off fairly quickly, that would be the same for David, if he took it seriously.

I think last time they played, David won in a Final set tie-break - that was in the first round in Kooyong this year, - so it definately won't be easy. As Fedex says, normally David would take care of Dent easily, but the fast hard courts will suit Dent's big serve so it won't be easy. I don't feel confident about it, but then I never do! And wonder how long it will be before someone in GM starts a "Battle of the Fatties" thread :p or tangerinus starts spouting "Come On Taylor!"

Well, it would help him even more if the court is slower, then again as long as his return is working he should handle Dent well, though a tough match is what he needs, but actually holding his nerve and winning it.

But think the most most important thing is, we don't know how he feel these days, how is his state now, coz he is out of court for such a long time, unless we saw his practise, any estimation could be not accurate.
And the worst thing is, he could face Roger in quarter. Let's see his first round first, and see further. Dent could be a good testing opponent, which can show his current state.

Good Luck David :) - Dent is a tough first round, but looking through the draw it could have been tougher. If David can get Taylor into some rallies from the back, he could do well.

Doubles draw - David and Agustin play Andreev/Davydenko. I have no idea how that will go, it's too unpredictable with all these players playing with compatriots they have never played with before. Here's the full doubles draw - http://www.athens2004.com/en/TennisMen/results?rsc=TEM002501&frag=TEM002000_C75

I think David is probably the only Argentinian that has real chances for a medal, especially after seeing the draw. Chela will face Mirnyi, Zabaleta can face Roddick in the third round and Calleri is playing Beck...

The mysteries continue, can David play well at the Games, and who was the bomber?

The troll who practically ravaged the "Say What You Want" thread on Sunday night. It now looks like I am talking to myself, since bomber was banned. And, as a parting "gift", it repped me (not good or bad, but I'll take it as bad) and told me to "respect others". Go figure....

Then it went to the Andy forum and proclaimed "VICTORY FOR DUCKNATION" because it had talked to me for an hour. The ignorant asses over there had nerve to answer this doofus. It doesn't matter about what they said; it's the fact that they said anything at all.

You forgot the elbow! And I agree about the weigh thing.

It's a logical progression, because he is El Gordo now and that excess weight does not help his recovery time and he is more likely to get injured, and that's happened recently.

Maybe GWH training methods are needed for David then, and some practice on his serve.

Don't worry about me UseTheSearchTool - I'm devastated but not stupid enough to do anything drastic. To tell you the truth I'm just getting more and more annoyed with all the shit I'm reading about drugs on GM, and also about David's Team being at fault. So maybe just keep a low profile until all the recriminations die down because I get really upset about that kind of stuff.

Good idea to keep a low profile, but at the same time I think if the three wise men trained David, he would be in fine phsyical shape.

08-29-2004, 04:59 PM
Yeah, you must be right!
Besides, some of the basketball players had such a tough year that this was amazing.
For example Herrman lost his mother, girlfriend, and younger sister in a car accident, and a year later (a month ago) when he was winning a championship, his Dad die from a heart attack, and it was on the same day his family die in that car accident. Awful! And the best part was that they kept on saying how good friends they are, and it showed.
And the football guys were great too, I remember a couple of years ago the arguments between Tevez (Boca) and D'Alessandro (River), and now to see them together and celebrating, and saying so many nice thing from each other is amazing!
I'm gonna miss the Olympics!

Marc Rosset is Tall

Thanks for all that information about the basketball team and the sadness that Herrman must have suffered, but I think he won the gold medal in his memory.

Bielsa was sooooooo critisized. Everyone wanted him out, the journalists were awful to him, and I think I didn't want him in the team either, but I don't know why exactly.
Anyway, I'm happy now, it must be a relieve for him, he had a LOT of pressure because if we didn't get the gold it fault would have been his like always. And I think he changed now too, he didn't want to put Tevez in the team, I think the fans convinced him to do it, so that's great. I hope everyone can leave him alone now, working the way he wants to.

jazz, it doesn't help when you have 40,000,000 coaches in Argentina, but after the WC Bielsa got hammered and hammered, but if he has changed for the better, than that's good for him and the team.

jazz_girl is totally right what she says about Ginobili. I saw many games of him, most of them with the Spurs in the NBA, and during this Olympics he played a terrific tournament pushing his team to the Gold medal.
For me, he belongs to the top5/top6 international players in the NBA!

I didn't follow the Argentinian success in soccer, but I've heard that they didn't concede a goal over the whole tournament! Wow, amazing! :worship: Congrats for two Gold medals in less than 24 hours! :clap2: :clap2:
it was about time! ;) :yeah:
Thanks a lot Neely!

I don't know much about the b-ball, you already know that the first game I watched was against Serbia & Montenegro, but I think Manu is amazing! Not just as a player but as a Human Being. He's so down to earth!!!
Anyway, I'll start watching all of his matches from now on.

Well, Bielsa was not the only one critisezed, the press also distroyed Batistuta, Verón and Crespo. And now that Bianchi left Boca, everyone was saying that this was Bielsa last tournament...

Hi guys!
I was just visiting Manu Ginobili's site and the guy is a genious! He
sent a diary to his site of every moment he lived in Athens and also
took a lot of pics and sent them to his site so his fans could see
them. In one of the pics there's David, I can't copy it, but I can
give you the link:

I think you might have to register to see it. In his diary he also mentions David and said that he had long chats with him. I love this guy!

thanks jazz!! i copy it though, think it has watermark on it, so no problem. ;)
and i also recognize Agustin in the right side besides Montecchia.

congrats for your second wonderful gold, athen can be good memory for Argentines, and i hope it can continue to our Beijing after 4 years.

why are your press critisized Bielsa?? because of the World cup?? in our media here, seems Bielsa is really a good coach, although he has many different opinions with the press. i know the press sometimes can critisized someone when he didn't reach their expectations, but the America Cup final and olympics gold are sure to change them, or they are too hard on Bielsa.

Yes, he was critisized for the WC, and for other matches too.
I have to tell you the truth, I'm sad that this Olympics are coming to an end, and I cannot wait till Beijing!!!!
