Stupid question about Rafa and Fed's legacy

I'm just going to assume that if fully healthy come the French, Rafa is unstoppable and nearly assured of winning it.

Therefore, and I know this sounds ridiculous, what would be better for Federer? Losing before the final, or making the final and getting beaten YET AGAIN by Rafa. If Rafa were to beat him, it would be his sixth slam final that he conquered Federer in, his 4th straight slam final win over Federer, and yet another high profile knock against Federer's GOAT status.

While if Federer were to lose before facing Rafa, it would most likely be overlooked once Federer retired.

fed should get to the semi's then lose if nadull already made the final.. if fed's SF is first then he should just make the final and hope for a miracle :P

but it wouldn't surprise me that nadull would get injured in the final and someone else would get the trophy for free..while rogie cries for tanking? nah can't see rogi tanking a grandslam or not bending over to nadull either.

Nadal is king, the end

well since the appearance in GS finals does count in your legacy then it would be stupid to tank a final for anyone no matter what reason, and also Federer's losses to Nadal in FO finals are very much justified and almost no one blames him for them rather than praise Nadal's dominance in best of 5 matches on clay, therefore even 6-0 6-0 6-0 wouldn't do that much to him mentally, however losses in other slams do hurt him more.

therefore no he should make the final and get his ass handed to him yet again if Nadal makes the final too.

Yes, but should Fed go back to all black to embrace the emo inside of him?

fed should start to enjoy losing just as much as he enjoys winning... heh heh... and i dont think its a silly question either Jimmy... cos, history will see the absence of a strong Nadal at the start of Federer's GS collection make it look like he dismissed mugs, would-be's and has-beens without any real test... and, i guess Federer is on the edge of being damaged goods by many if the Nadal & Federer finals show keeps going Nadal's way...

yet... the presence of Nadal offers Federer's career some worth... IF... (and its a pretty big if at this stage)... if he can overcome Nadal somewhere this year and next..

not hard to fly like an eagle when you are surrounded by geese... but how about when someone moonballs on your parade...?

Wouldn't be suprised if Verdasco/Murray/Monfils bt Fed at RG before final.

Monfils should easily beat Fed every time due to his uber-athleticism.

I would be shocked and let me tell you why:

Verdasco is not as good as Federer on clay, and the thought of him taking 3 sets from Fed makes blood pour out of my ears.

Monfils could not beat MonoFed on dirt last year. I have no reason to think he could beat RegFed this year.

Murray will not beat Fed before the final as he is always drawn in Rafa's half at Slams.

FedFan, for a second out of the corner of my eye I thought your signature said: "Roger your tennis is dirt."

Clay is Murray's weakest surface, Verdasco is best on hard courts and has been owned by Federer, and Monfils is impossible to gauge. I wonder if Simon might trouble Federer though? Should they somehow end up on the same half. ;)

Also, I know Federer utterly annihilated Del Potro, but if there's any surface where JMDP is going to overcome his pathetic record against the top 10, it's on clay, where he actually could give Federer's backhand trouble. Beating him is another matter though.

Nadal owns him, especially on clay, so it doesn't matter if there's one more win for the Spaniard
Federer losing before the final would mean another impact on his status as no°2 right now and won't help him at Wimbledon

Where's the option "growing some balls and stop playing like a junior against Nadull"?

Obviously you weren't watching the match, Rog threw the kitchen sink and it all came back. He would have destroyed NoleMug or murrayMug in 3 sets in that form.

if a kitchen sink is a shitty limp backhand that doesnt meet the ground past the service line for the duration of the match without fail... then yeah...

What if Federer wins RG but Rafa didn't play because he was injured....

How would history remember this?

that he won RG? details won't matter that much in the long run, who cares whom Agassi beat to win his RG and who remembers whom Sampras defeated to reach the semis? only results are remembered but tennis-tards will always know

Of course he plays the finals. Just because he took a beating last year doesn't mean it's always going to be this one-sided. It would only take an off-day from Nadal and an in-form Federer to turn the result around.

You nailed it mate.

It must be great motivation for Federer, sure he'd take a slam final vs a mug where he'd win easily, but the thought of beating Nadal must be an even tastier prospect. A couple of slam final wins vs Nadal taking him past Sampras' record followed by retirement would seal the legacy in history forever. He'd be known as a legend who, as well as being a great player, overcame adversity and found a way to beat the young guns even whilst well past his best. Not a bad way to bow out if he can manage it.

He should consider withdrawing for the sake of his mental health and men tennis.

Obviously Jimmyv says the truth :yeah: :

if Federer meets Nadal again on clay, the fans will remember another win for Nadal in their h2h

... and not see that outside from clay, they are equal.

I don't think Federer is as stupid as fans, but as fans are the ones who speak about GOAT, then for that debate yes, he should lose before the final.
