Impressive by Cilic, though Ancic should have done better imo.

But 13-1 this year already for Cilic and 2 titles. Wow

Bad tactics from Ancic, although I am not sure that the different one would have worked either. Exchanging power shots from the baseline is exactly what suits Cilic. Mario tried coming to net a few times but he was too slow and he got passed every time. Maybe he should have tried mixing a bit, slicing with a purpose to get Cilic out of the rhythm and the comfort zone.

so Cilic will make sure he plays Vienna this year

it'd be sad if his career ended up the same as Ljubo's though :p

(most unsuccessful no.3 in the modern history of the game (2001-2008 :p)

Cilic is already a great player but he could become even better cause there a few things he could improve a lot in his game: net play, slicing, patience in rallies, movement when changing directions. Potential is strong within him.

It would be kind of disappointing if he didn't win any more titles till October

Although it is conceivable that he will focus more on the bigger tournaments soon, like AMS and GS. Those big tournaments are worth big points this year, much more than MM titles such as Zagreb (for example AMS = 1000 points, ATP 250 = 250 points). Because he only has few points to defend until the grass season, he could easily make the top-10 with a few good results in the bigger tournaments.

Ljubo wasn't that bad -- at his peak in 2005/2006 he was just about the only player giving a dominant Fed a bit of game on fast surfaces. He lost a lot of close matches with Fed who was unbeatable at the time. If not for Federer Ljubicic would have won some Masters Series and more other titles.

well no he wasn't :p

I saw Ljubo play Tsonga in the AO so I know what he still is capable of :p

But I guess you can say the same thing for Roddick, Hewitt, Ferrero and tens of other players. You could also say the same thing about Federer with Nadal. :p

So when I say underachieving, I know what I'm talking about :p

Stop bashing Ljubo, only one man in history has done what he has done in DC and his name is John McEnroe and he has nowhere near the talent of Jmac or Marin for that matter. He's a legend with a capital L.

okay okay okay......

he is very talented and IF he didn't have to play Tsonga he would have made it far in the AO. Ljubo IMHO squandered his best chance in the AO by losing to Baggy :p

If anyone here is bashing Ljubo, they should be bashed themselves ;)

Ljubo's DC antics are worthy of recognition too :clap2:

Since 2000 the USA has won every Davis Cup tie at home.
Except in 2005, when Ljubo single-handedly destroyed the USA in California beating Roddick and Agassi.

Ljubo is good. Just don't make him a better no. 3 in the world than he really is :p

At the very least both Roddick and Djokovic have achieved more than Ljuba Truba has ;)

It's not about comparisons, it's about ridiculing the fact that Cilic should and almost certainly will have a better career then him. He's done very well given his potential, should have won those two masters titles against Nadal and Berdych to fully maximize it, but winning all double rubbers and all but one single rubber en route to a DC title more than makes up for it.

Tankman
02-08-2009, 07:44 PM
ok no worries... Cilic could just die tmrw for all you know ;) :o :p

and of course. I'd say the same thing about Hewitt and the Scud for Australia :rocker2:

Exactly.
I'm only saying Cilic has to improve all court game if he wants to be a competitor for the best players in the world (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray). The same situation with Del Potro...

Just some observations on these players.

Ancic's career has hit a brickwall a while ago and Cilic is way too lanky with feet the size of flippers. He does not have a body for long term tennis success.
