NOLE IN MARSEILLE

ATP 250 Event - http://www.open13.fr/

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8748/300pxvieuxportdemarseiljv4.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=300pxvieuxportdemarseiljv4.jpg)
Last time I went to Marseille, some guy along the quayside wanted to "buy" me in return for a battered old Mercedes :o Luckily my ex refused the offer - though he said he may have reconsidered if the car had been new :tape: Maybe that's why he's my "ex"?

Anyway - I digress - Nole will play in Marseille week starting 16th February. It will be his first tournament since the AO. Let's hope he has had time to regroup and practice hard, and I wish him all the best to go deep into this tournament.

:secret: Have to admit that normally when I start a thread he loses in the 2nd round - so if he goes further I'll consider it a great personal success :)

Looks like a few of the usual suspects will be there.

1 Djokovic, Novak SRB 3
2 Murray, Andy GBR 4
3 Simon, Gilles FRA 6
4 Tsonga, Jo-Wilfried FRA 7
5 Monfils, Gael FRA 13
6 Berdych, Tomas CZE 20
7 Gasquet, Richard FRA 23
8 Tursunov, Dmitry RUS 24
9 Cilic, Marin CRO 27
10 Lopez, Feliciano ESP 30
11 Mathieu, Paul-Henri FRA 31
12 Melzer, Jurgen AUT 32
13 Schuettler, Rainer GER 33
14 Seppi, Andreas ITA 34
15 Ancic, Mario CRO 35
16 Bolelli, Simone ITA 38
17 Youzhny, Mikhail RUS 39
18 Benneteau, Julien FRA 40
19 Hanescu, Victor ROU 48
20 Gicquel, Marc FRA 50
21 Santoro, Fabrice FRA 51
22 Llodra, Michael FRA 54
23 Ljubicic, Ivan CRO 58
WC Safin, Marat RUS 27

At least he can't play Tsonga until the SFs and Murray until the final.

It'll be good just to see him again since he's been like a ghost since the AO.

Good luck Nole!

Yes - I was practicing :o Thought it was better to practice in our thread than mess up one I started here :o

And I would prefer it not to be Nole's too. Guess you're already excited to see JWT back here in Europe - and in his home country too :help:

Thought I'd bump this up since the draw is on Saturday. :) Plus his official site provides some evidence that he still exists despite no live sightings. ;)

Novak back on court!
After three weeks off court, Novak is coming back on the tennis stage!

The third player in the world is playing in Marseille from Monday, February 16th. This will be Djokovic's fourth tournament in 2009. It belongs to ATP World Tour 250 tier, and the prize money is 576,000 euros.

The Australian Open quarterfinalist will be no.1 seed, and will get a BYE in the first round.

Andy Murray and Gilles Simon from top 10 will play there. Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Marin Cilic, Mario Ancic, Ivan Ljubicic are also in the tournament field. This will be Nole's third consecutive appearance at the Open 13 tournament. He hasn't been lucky so far. In 2007 he lost in the opening round, and last year he was eliminated in the second round.

The defending champion in Marseille is Andy Murray, who defeated Mario Ancic in the last year's finals.

The winner of the tournament will get 250 ATP points and 88,500 euros.

From the official Marseille site:

Draw ceremony postponed
The draw ceremony, originally scheduled at noon on Saturday February 14th at the Palais des Sports has been postponed to 6 pm. The location remains the same.

Also, here's a link to the web tv page of the site. Hopefully, that'll mean no one will have to worry about not seeing any matches due to their area not broadcasting Marseille.

I just watched Andy v Mario on our TV. Andy was limping pretty badly. Don't know what the problem is, but our commentators said he was in doubt to even play in the Final tomorrow, and had only played today because he didn't want to let the people down who had paid money for a semi final. Seems it is quite serious, which is why he has already pulled out of Marseille.

Edit: I see they have just given a Wild Card to Grigor Dimitrov  I really hope Nole doesn't draw him

02-14-2009, 02:09 PM
"I got luck today," said the winner of this first semi-final.
"I was playing great and Mario was not on his best game.
"I was hitting the ball well and made very few mistakes. It was tough for him. I'm very happy to come through."

Murray said that he would have to get a problem with his foot checked out but was optimistic of being ready for the Sunday final. He was flexing the foot several times during his brief outing on court.

"I'll have the physio take a look but I'm hoping it will all be fine."

I watched the match and Murray hobbled very much on the end of the match

It means something like "the day of glory has arrived" :) It's a line from the French National Anthem, which, of course, is called "La Marseillaise", so I thought it vaguely fitted as a thread title. I don't see any glory against Chardy on an indoor court in his own country though :help:

I have full trust in Marat to loose early, Nole's beat Clement easy in three at the USO, Hernych had some good results last week so he might be hot or cold. Vliegen/Zverev should be little trouble. Ivan/Dmitry are unknown variables, but Nole can get through either. The only one's who may spell trouble would Feli/JWT. R1 against Jeremy can get tricky, but think Nole will pull through.

Dubai (or the country UAE) refused visa for Peer to play in the WTA tournament this week. Basically the tournaments (both WTA and ATP) promised to grant visas to all players who make entry list but so far, all Israeli players were blocked one way or another. The players should boycott tournaments like this, especially the top players to show their support of fellow players.

They should. This is an insult to the whole tour. What if other countries decided to behave like this? If they cannot respect the rules of ATP or WTA tour then they should not have a privilege of hosting the tournaments. I would really like to see players pull out of this tournament.

I agree, but no one will. The WTA released a statement saying they were going to look into the future of the tournament and were very upset by this news. I may just be overly cynical, but I have a feeling that sounds good today, but they're really hoping the whole thing blows over and people barely remember it next year when the tournament rolls around. I blame the tour above all else. They knew this was going to be a problem, but they wanted the money and for the Israelis to just stay home. I know a lot of people say that politics and sports shouldn't mix, and on one hand I agree with that since I don't really want to hear about politics when watching sports, but on the other hand I'm glad Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe didn't feel that way back in the day. Sadly, I think Billie Jean feels that way today, though.

It may not be an issue next year or further down the road. Dubai's money is running out. The real estate market is falling like/or worse than US. Roger probably lost money in his 2nd home there :p And without the BIG appearance fee, there won't be that many top players playing there.

I was reading Zverev's "blog" and he says that he was supposed to practice with Nole today, but Nole cancelled because he isn't feeling well.

I don't think it's anything serious, but I thought I would let you know.

Thanks for sharing. :) Not the best news to inspire confidence. Hope he's 100% by match day.

Thanks for coming over with the news - hope Nole gets well soon - hopefully it's just a cold like mine - should be clear in a day or so.

As for Dubai - I think what they've done is disgusting, and I really hope they are punished for it by having their damn tournament wiped from the schedule:fiery: I certainly hope players will pull out. Sadly neither will happen though

Hmm - it just says due to illness - no more detail. But we won't hold our breath. Rather tough on the Marseille tournament if the top seed collapses two years in succession though. They might wish to bestow their appearance money elsewhere next year.

What does anyone expect from Dubai? It is just acting true to form - its record is also appalling in terms of conditions for foreign construction workers etc. It has always struck me as a negative entry on Federer's personal balance sheet that he owns property and spends so much time there.

That's true about Dubai. Always expect that things will be better despite no actual reason as to why it would be different. And I admit to the same uneasy feelings about Federer's connection to Dubai. The ATP/WTA ties with the country also make me uneasy.

On topic, the webtv on the Marseille site doesn't appear to work. Hopefully just a problem today. Does anyone remember what it was like last year, if it even existed? I thought it worked, but then I was thinking maybe I had it confused with Rotterdam's web stream.

Guess it's because there are more, higher ranked French players still involved for the later sessions - Simon, Tsonga etc. It might work in Nole's favour, because in the afternoon, less of the crowd will be drunk and raucous like they may become at night!

Nole will play against Jan Hernych in the second round. Number 68 in the world from Czech Republic beat the Belgian Kristof Vliegen.

The Serbian and the Czech player met only once, in 2006, in the second round of Den Bosch (grass), Hernych won in straight sets, 6:2 6:4.

ATP Tour - Djokovic returns with win in Marseille

A refreshed Novak Djokovic started his Marseille Open campaign with a 7-6 6-4 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
The world number three has been out of action since he retired against American Andy Roddick during their Australian Open quarter-final last month.

"I took some rest after the Australian Open. I needed to have a fresh mind," Djokovic said after his first-round win.

The top seed served 13 aces and only had to defend one break point against the 22-year-old Chardy, who reached the final of this month's South African Open.

"You always have to be happy when you win, especially after a couple of weeks off," commented Djokovic. "I tried to recover after the Australian Open quarter-finals and tried to get some rhythm. It was hard to get some rhythm today because I played against a big server and we were both serving well with a high percentage of first serves. It was just a matter of a couple of points that decided the winner."

Hopefully Rose will be here later!

Pretty good start 3-0 and Hernych so far can't handle Nole's ground stroke. As long as Nole didn't commit an UE. ;)

Djokovic, Benneteau reach Open 13 quarterfinals

MARSEILLE, France (AP)—Novak Djokovic reached the quarterfinals of the Open 13 on Thursday, beating Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4.

The third-ranked Serb broke Hernych in the first game, then dropped serve at 5-4. They also traded breaks in the second set, with Djokovic again breaking to claim the set.

“I made a lot of unforced errors today,” Djokovic said. “I was in control of the match most of the time. With my mistakes, I gave him opportunities to come back in the match. But I’m happy to get through in straight sets.”

Djokovic will next play Mischa Zverev of Germany.

Nole.. you were so frustrated and pissy and hissy.. it actually made me smile, means you care.

On a more serious note, what. the. fuck. happened to his fh? Doesn't take the balls early, lousy timing, too much of a swing or a tight one..:cuckoo: Is it just a matter of confidence?
He tried to go for too much today and missed a lot.

Still. Think he'll be better come tomorrow.:)

Yes - MTF is slow as help again right now  As for Zverev - I've seen him play a bit here in Europe. Makes a lot of unforced errors and has a tendancy to choke, but he also has another "BIG SERVE" I am sick and tired of these damned big servers  In his interview after the match, Nole said they knew each other quite well from junior days - I guess maybe Zverev spent some time at the Pilic Academy too?

Lee
02-19-2009, 04:49 PM
With the racket and string technology, almost all up-and-coming players are "big" servers. Nole better learns how to deal with them ASAP.

Honestly, I can't blame his missing forehands on the new racket. His forehand has been hit-or-miss since last year hard court season
