#30 Tusunov playing qualifying draw for Zagreb

I just noticed Tursunov is playing the qualifying for an MM tournament in Zagreb. What's up with that? Kind of risky if he's just looking for a few extra matches. Whenever a player does that it seems to backfire and they end up not even making it into the tournament. If Tursunov does qualify it will be very unlucky for whomever draws him as a qualifier because he'd probably be about 5th seed if he just applied straight into the main draw.

It's more for the matches to be honest, can't hit a forehand at a barn door at the moment.

Verdasco played qualies at Queens and ended up in the 4th round of Wimbledon where he led Stepanek 2-1 in sets.

Simon played qualies at Casablanca and took the title last year. Stepanek kick started his 2007 season reaching the semis in Gstaad as a qualie and ended up rising from 60 or so to being not far off top 10 at one point.

It can be beneficial, but then Tursunov is the clown who instead of resting a problematic shoulder at the end of the season decides to play a heap of challengers. I wouldn't like to apply logic to him. Maybe the clown just missed the deadline

All those instances were players playing qualies because they were late to sign up for the main draw.

I'm sure that's the case.

Thanks! I didn't know they had different deadlines for the draws.

Maybe it's to build his confidence up again. He has had some poor results lately. Sometimes he's great and other times  I'm surprised I haven't got him in my sig as I seem to have a soft spot for inconsistency! :o

I will never understand the way Dima constructs his schedule.

obviously a late entrant, same happened with Simon last year in bucharest and he ended up winning the title, ah well the way dima is playing that happening again is very unlikely

I would say so :rolls:

He isn't the smartest tactician on court...and he probably isn't too smart with scheduling either.

He was definitely late for the deadline, but it has been mentioned they offered him a WC and he declined, so perhaps he wants a few matches under his belt.

Last year a lucky loser won. Maybe he's just superstitious.

So he's gonna tank the final qualifying round 100% guaranteed! :rolls:

And then get in as LL (highest seeded loser) and win the tournament.

I'm starting to like this guy.

I remember him playing quali's before, when he could have entered directly. He probably didn't schedule this tournament but decided to play here anyway, because of his very poor form. He needs matches and thinks he can win against quali-guys. Not a big deal in my opinion.

The strange thing is that he could have gotten WC, but then again, this confirms that he wants to win matches for his confidence. He also tends to play quali's sometimes, just to play matches and win points, I kind of like that.

Bad thing is though, that if he does qualify, he will be against Andreev, Ancic, Gulbis or Stakhovsky :s

And if he doesn't qualify, it will be even worse for his confidence. But I cannot see him failing in this draw...

Zagreb should never offer a WC to a major mug like Tursunov.
