2008 Wimbledon final? Not a patch on this match. The only area in which it matched it was the stakes involved.

Just a stunning match. That double fault was no way for it to end.

Verdasco could have closed this easily if he had been willing to go to net a bit more. In numerous points, Fernando had pushed Nadal so far out of the court he had to slice his way back and then Nando just stood at the baseline, giving Rafa the time he needed to recover and neutralizing the rally.

What a sick match.

95 / 76 vs 52 / 25 winners/ue clearly shows who was dictating the play.

Some jawbreaking shots mixed with too many errors from Nando, but that's how it goes when you play sucj a high risk game.

Too many times Verdasco let Nadal back to the game after having 40-0 or 40-15 on his own serve.

Stunning. The best match of the year so far, no doubt.

One of the best matches I've ever seen. I didn't know Fernando could be THAT good. Considering their head-to-head and Nando's game, I thought that Nadal would breeze in three sets. I am glad Fernando proved me wrong, but am disappointed that he could not take Nadal out. Still, even though I am not a fan of either player, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great tennis throughout the entire match :hatoff: It will be tough for the final match to beat this one in terms of quality and intensity.

I suffered multiple tiny heart attacks in the final set. Nadal will always be one of my least favourite players, but you have to respect his fighting spirit. He won it on his last legs. Respect.

I'm pretty sure there's more to come from Verdasco, he'll be back. What a few months after all those years of many dissapontmeint. BRAVO!! In terms of watchability, he's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay above slutty passive moonball 9000 rotations of a ball per second Nadal's game.

High quality match, that had a very shitty ending which was not fitting for the standard of play.

Verdasco lost on the scoreboard, but he was no loser in this match. Nadal's defence got him over the line.

It was fantastic to be proven wrong about Verdasco bending over in this match, glad that he forgot the lube. The Melbourne crowd were lucky to see this match.

Some will call it one of the best semi-finals ever. And what a great performance by both of them.

Is there anything Nadal could have done better and improve for the final? Some of the points possibly seemed longer that they should have been because:

– he was standing so far back from the baseline for 1st and 2nd serves (resulting to weaker returns and many un-returns). The commentators seemed puzzled as to why he didn't make an adjustment to this over 5 sets.
– for the second match running he didn't use his backhand for winners

Not taking away anything from the match nor the way the guys played. Just something to think about...

Well, I am 28 and in my opinion it was one of the greates semis in AO since I've been watching this tourney, that is some 14-15 years now.

Roger - Safin was better in terms of drama and quality and this is the only semi that comes to my mind that would be better than this in last 10 years. I am talking only about AO.

It could have been the worst semi for you of course, after all everybody has his own opinion and yours are mostly :haha: imo.

Gotta love the Nadulltards hyping up this match... only because Verdasco bent over.

Last year Tsonga played much better. Gonzalez played much better in 2007. Were those matches considered great? Of course not, because Nadull was humiliated.

I'm obviously gutted for Nando but i'm glad that he was able to compete that well with the number one player in the world.:worship:

I REALLY hope that he will keep it up.
Double-faulting to lose the match was reminiscent of the old Nando, but he has to look at the effort he just made throughout the week.
Playing this well, he could be a great add to the top league.

He looked a bit tired in the fifth, less reactive, which is pretty normal but against Nadal, any meltdown is highly dangerous.

Win it all, Rafa.

Sometimes I thought who can ever meet Nadal.

I know one thing: all the hypes and things Roger wants to accomplished/all the records he's been chasing, Nadal just quietly came in and got it with easier effort than Roger.

Wimby; Olympics; even glam slam. Nadal will get all 4 easier than Roger (Roger and French), may be even withing a calander year. Roger might pass Sampras total slams, but I am having a feeling that Nadal can surpass that record.:worship:

It's like Roger's been striving for great achievements, but his records are erased 3 years later.

What a match :) gosh I just love the AO and i'm so jealous at the Australians who got to see it live! Incredible play by Verdasco, he looked so tired especially at the end of the 3rd set that i though that he would retire. Dunno from where did he find the power to fight but he deserves nothing but respect for that. And congrats to Rafa of course! I still think that it's very unfair that both semis are played on different days. Otherwise I would've bet on Nadal beating Roger but now I have no idea what will happen...

A sensational epic. Nadal’s defence was on full display & it’s going to be hard to argue that he isn’t the best defender of all-time on all surfaces.

Nadal could’ve been more aggressive though, to shorten those long points. He did a hell of a lot of running and didn’t attack the net enough (never does). It’s going to be difficult for Nadal to fully recover in time for Sunday’s final.

Only saw the last 1.5 sets, but that was brilliant enough! Very well done to both guys! :worship: And, again, this is the sort of match where it is sad that there has to be a loser. :(

Fer played his heart out and came up with some incredible stuff...in particular, I'm remembering that sick angle he was able to create on a whipped cross-court forehand. But the end was a little inevitable...failed to make the most of a mini-chance in the 9th game, and you wondered how long, if at all, he might be able to successfully serve to stay in the match...and I did wonder if he might struggle a little on a 2nd serve at match point. Disappointing end for him, but otherwise he can hold his head high...hopefully he can maintain this level of form for much of the year. If he does, he has a solid chance of qualifying for London. :yeah:

Totally overrated match, it was good for the drama, but all the shotmaking and unbeliebable clutch play was coming from Verdasco. The match stats say it all, Nadal had to rely on Verdasco's errors to win it, as usual. Shame Murray didn't get to the SF and school this tool off the court.

Excellent points. One of the best matches in years...and certainly in the history of this tourney. VERY reminiscent of Sampras/Corretja (which ALSO ended on a double fault on match point). Verdasco was PUNISHING the ball.

However, Rafa's strategies during the match were non-existent. He was receiving WAY too far back...and was not hitting the backhand with authority. His second serve was almost WTA-level...and was getting trounced. Still, he fought harder than anyone in history not named Connors...and again: added to the legacy of Nadal.

People can dog his game, but NO ONE can doubt his heart.

Expected.

Pathetic from Verdasco to bend over once again to Nadull, then even more pathetic to lose a match on a DF.

1) 2 DFs to lose a match = bending over. If it were against Federer people would be whining all day long that he "gifted him the match".

Berdych missed two easy volleyes = he gifted the match
Verdasco makes two dfs = amazing fight from Rafa to get the break

Nadal was lucky to win, had Verdasco not played Aussie Doubles this week, he would have been more energized.

PATHETIC! You are probalbly very young, but even most teenagers aren^t as dumb as you seem to be. I would like to see how dynamic Roger^s shots would be after playing for 5 hours. I pray Rafa wins this tournament just to hopefully put an end the stupid, vicious statements by some of the Fed fans here. This was a great match! Anyone who does not realize that knows nothing about tennis.

I'm not a Federer fan.

Most teenagers know how not to put ^ instead of ' when typing. I'm not one of them, though. Are you?

Federer has played many many long matches and he doesn't start moonballing.

Why, WHY do I have to be a Rafa fan of all players... :bigcry: I nearly turned this match off, just couldn't take the stress any more. Wasn't the Wimbledon final enough? Fucking ridiculously gutsy fighting and out of this world serving from Verdasco, I feel so sorry that he had to "lose" this match, but he's going to have a great year. As for Rafa.... you have no chance in the final, but right now... I don't care :woohoo:

Geat post :yeah: Now you know how i felt Roger vs Berdych, and wimby! :)

Still, he fought harder than anyone in history not named Connors...and again: added to the legacy of Nadal.

thank you. I'm really surprised by the first point (standing so far back and not making adjustment). He's a clever player and the only explanation I can find to resisting to receive closer to the baseline is lack of confidence or outside his comfort zone

Nadal only faced 4 BPS in that whole 5:14 match and had about 5 UE per set

Fed has no hope against that

Because Verdasco was going going for return winners or close to it most of the time. When he didn't, he got to 0:30 quite a few times, only to blow it by being too hasty. Nohting rock solid about Nadal's serve games. If Federer blows it, it will be because he shit his pants more than in Wimbledon.

Sweet Jesus, what's with all the bitching and moaning? This was an awesome match, was it the best ever? Opinions will vary but no one can dispute that both men showed heart. Very, very entertaining to watch. I think when Rafa realized Verdasco was hurting and didn't move that well anymore in the 5th he went back to just pushing the ball back in because he didn't want to make any mistakes. Not the most attractive kind of tennis but effective.
