Now that Ernests has left Australia we need a new thread for his tournaments

Here's his schedule starting from the next week:

Zagreb (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=135159)
San Jose (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=135353)
Memphis (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=135677)
Delray Beach (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=136148)

These are four consecutive weeks  I don't remember another time when Ernie has had such a tight schedule. The week after Delray Beach is Davis Cup week but Ernests won't be playing for Latvia (as far as I know) because Indian Wells (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=137164) is right after that. And a bit later there's Miami, too.

Good luck Ernest :yeah:

Zagreb's Draw:

Andreev(1) vs Dodig
Tursunov vs Gulbis
Gabashvili vs Youzhny
Lacko vs (7)Ancic

San Jose's Draw:

Roddick(1) vs Qualifier
Gulbis vs Mello (LL)
Haas vs Poerschke(WC)
Rochus vs Kunitsyn(7)

Memphis Draw:

[5] STEPANEK, Radek CZE vs QUALIFIER
KOUBEK, Stefan AUT vs GARCIA-LOPEZ, Guillermo ESP
GULBIS, Ernests LAT vs DENT, Taylor USA
CANAS, Guillermo ARG vs [2] DEL POTRO, Juan Martin ARG

I hope he does well in those upcoming tourneys!:) Hopefully he doesn't run out of steam too soon, though. I had a dream yesterday that he lost in R1 at Zagreb, but then managed it to R3 in San Jose..weird.:p

I wish the qualifier wont turn out being Andis Juska. :(
About Andreev, well, I like thinking Ernests will take advantage of their last AO match and of the things he could learn in that occasion. He should know how to play the russian.

Actually, a good draw! :) Tursunov won't be a stumbling-block for Erno. Let's face the reality...Dima is a bit overrated now. This season haa turned especially bad for him - he hasn't passed R1 in 3 tournaments this year - Doha, Sydney, AO. And he lost to 148th-ranked, 25th-ranked (Gasquet) and 138th-ranked Cipolli in AO. It doesnt sound acceptable for his ranking at all.
And now in Zagreb he won 3 qualifiers. 240th-ranked (but it was a tight match - 5:7, 6:7), 655th-ranked and 230th-ranked.

C'mon...he MUST NOT be a problem for Ernie.

But of course..i won't predict anything. The result will depend on many factors. I just wanted to clarify the situation.

 And they've put the top seed Andreev on there too,2nd match on:o The only half decent thing is that there's no advantage in terms of court.

They're missing the whole point though,in terms of closeness in rankings Dima vs Erno is the match of the round. Scheduling court is a big problem when there are 9 Croatians in the draw, playing in their home tournament. Sadly for us,they get priority for Centre Court for singles, apart from the guy who is playing Igor:o

 He's on Court 1 and as if that's not enough, it will start before Mario's match is over. I'm really pissed. Meanwhile, they have Hrbaty and Stakhovsky on Center Court. I know Stak's the defending champion, but I'd bet anything more people want to see this match. Some home guys could play on Court 1 as well

Gulbis beat Tursunov today 4-6 6-4 6-4. It must have been a hard match and I'm very glad he fought well and won it in the end :yeah: Dodig is no. 425 in the world so Ernie really should beat him and break the second round curse finally. Hopefully

Caught only the last set, but Ernie looked impressive then :yeah: He's really crushing that poor ball. No overdoing it, though, waited for the right moment for the final punch.
The next one should be on Center Court as he's playing the Croatian guy, meaning a livestream available. He should really sail through that one, I'm not sure what Andreev was doing, but time for Erno to get to round 3.

You should, Ellen. ;) Maybe you can get him out of this place. I'm sure it's a mental thing. He's stuck in this bad place, always losing in R2. Hope someone can get him out of it. Sometimes it looks like he himself does not believe he can get past R2. (Bad grammar there, sorry about that :o ). If he doesn’t believe it, how can he move on? Oh, and I don't want to hear about beautiful losses anymore. What he needs is to buy DVDs with Nadals' matches against Federer; he'll learn from there much more than any psychologist could ever teach him. My opinion :aplot:

she sounded pretty mad. I sent her another message asking how she was feeling now, she hasn't replied yet

I'm sorry she had to witness that. It's one thing to fight and lose the match, and completeley another to not try at all, if that's what happend. Stella was right, maybe we all need a few days before posting more on this matter; I'm sure I do.

Di, I can understand how you feel I think. This is a ridiculous loss, because if he was not even trying to win, then it's unprofessionalism on his part. I'm mad at him too but I have just recently bought my ticket to Memphis and booked hotel for one week, so I have to stay positive about the whole thing or I'll go bananas. Cancelling the trip will cost me a good sum so I might as well go. I'm sorry for Camilla too. I feel like her experience in Zagreb might be a preview of mine.:sad:

Di,
I believe that everything that you said came from your heart, so that is OK.

I am afraid that Gulbis starded a "self-sabotage" behavior. I hope not, but if he keep the "unprofessionalism" he´ll lose much more than games and money: he´ll lose tennis fans.

I am disappointed. But not because of Ernests, although it was rather shocking result.
I am really disappointed of what I read tonight in this board and of some of you who called themselves as Gulbis fans.

If you claim yourself as a truly fan indeed, so please BE a truly fan - and not only when your favourite players wins, it's so easy.. Please also show some respect even after losses, and it doesn't matter how terrible or ridiculous they can be. I never expected that some of you can go and join bashing Ernests. It is the most shocking for me and not his loss!

What has happened today? WHAT? It is game, it is tennis, someone wins, someone losses, don't you know that? I really don't understand why many of you soooo overreacted. It's nothing special! Nothing at all! It happens. It is just a game. I guess most of you are beginning tennis fans. So I want to say you something, some kind of nice advise: there will many other defeats, even more awful. It is pretty usual for all kinds of sports, huh? One cannot win all the time. I have rights to say that because I 've been Marat fan for many many years - and as you guess, nothing compares to that :)))) but it’s never boring. And actually you should enjoy you’re a fan of such of an extraordinary player, who defeated ATP #3 and loss to #425 within a month.
And if this loss is a reason for stop being Ernests fan, then indeed, it’s right time to find some another hobby. Collecting porcelain elephants, maybe. I think Ernests won’t lose a fan because actually you were never his fan.

I wonder, who gave you rights to talk about Ernests' being hangover? I just want to ask you, maybe you were drinking brotherhood with him yesterday?
He is a grown-up, so please let him decide what to do and what not to do on day before matches. If you think tennis players are angels, then I really don't know what to say
Yes, he definitely a bit spoiled. Yes, as I have told Janis earlier tonight, it's better for him to find some new brain and change the attutude to life as soon as possible. But honestly speaking, I am afraid there won't be any changes (as I knew many other examples of spoiled boyzzzzz and men and not only in tennis  ) so take him as you find him, no?
I don't think Ernie is pretty happy right now at the moment. Don't be so ego and don't think you are upset more than him. Don't some of you write they would like Ernests to come here and read MTF time from time? Do you really want him to read all these shit? Because if you want, I should admit that you hate him more than all GM clinic patients. And you don’t hate him, do you? ;)

So I suggest to calm down, don’t act anymore as annoying teenagers and stop the drama on the board. :wavey:

Oh, I don't feel like writing this match report :sobbing: First of all, Dodig played well, better than I'd expect him to, served well, got to all the balls and returned them deep and hard enough to be competitive, but Ernests should have won this regardless. Once he started to read the serve better, he got the break, but then everything went downhill and it's strictly due to his attitude. There was a dubious call on his serve as he was serving for the set and he was annoyed. I'm not sure if it was in or out, but the linesmen are pretty bad the entire week, usually to the detriment of both players equally. He was complaining to the umpire for a short time and didn't really focus for the rest of the game and ended up losing it, as well as the TB. He never really got back into the match. Dodig won because he wanted it more, plain and simple. Ernie got a warning for racket abuse and a point penalty later on for throwing the ball to the crowd after an UE :o
I can live with losing your focus, getting tight, all the other things that might go wrong, but this was really bratish behavior. If you think you should be wining this (and you should), then for heaven's sake exert effort to do it and it will happen. If you need to break a racket to vent the frustration, fine, but then get back into the match and play. I don't remember when was the last time I saw someone so listless as he was in the 2nd set, especially after he got broken. I hope someone has a nice adult talk with him.

I just wish he'd at least consider going back to the Challenger circuit for a while, so he could get his ranking up for RG, where he has to defend a bazillion points :o

I hope these losses are making him hungry. I can't really say that I see indifference in results from him, because I haven't seen him play a lot, but...a lot of things have been getting to him easily. Ever since Madrid, he's been catty. And I hate seeing him with that type of attitude. Bring back the RG Ernie: ice in his veins, collected, and a fighter.

Nadie, thanks for that reminder of what a good Ernie fan should do in the aftermath of a loss. You gave us a good perspective on a few things. However, I think that we should also give room and understanding for these sudden bursts of reaction, esp. when our guy loses to someone ranked 400 places below him. Part of why I spend time in this forum is so I can celebrate and commiserate with people who feel as strongly as I do about Ernests. (Who else would livescore with me at 4AM?) My friends who are not his fans would think I had lost my marbles if I had started venting to them about this loss, and I needed a place to let off steam today because it kind of ruined my day. As Ernie's fans, we want so much for our guy to win and because our hopes are high, the disappointments can also be deep. It's normal,no? But in the end, we always calm down, the red emoticons are replaced by the smiling yellows and we set our sights on the next tournament. Those that quit being fans after this string of losses are no less fans for doing so, imo. They probably just don't want to deal with the heartbreak anymore and who can blame them? After all, this has to be fun. Those that stay, well, it's a choice we make and so... on it goes.

And Ernie, please make it to the quarters in Memphis so I'll have something to do for the rest of my stay! :armed:

A Croatian journalist, Berticevic, about this match (source NRA.lv (http://www.nra.lv/zinas/16617-divas-uzvaras-pec-kartas-laikam-par-daudz-prasits.htm)):

"I don't think Gulbis played great but he definitely could have won the first set. Ernest played a very bad tie break losing 6 points in a row. He played worse in the second set, and he made DFs several times in both sets in important moments. Dodig had nothing to lose and he confirmed that his win over Andreev wasn't a fluke. He serves well like all Croats. Not as well as Karlovic or Cilic but close. His first serve was often over 200 km/h and it wasn't easy to return it. Dodig could also play well in baseline rallies now and then."

Gulbis about the match:

"I was upset about some line calls. In the first set at 5-5 and deuce, I served an ace but it was called out although it was far from being out. In the tie break, the chair umpire had to overrule four line calls which were all in favour of my opponent and we had to replay the points. I couldn't forget these calls in the second set. It's my fault that I lost. I could feel that Dodig was serving well and moving well around the court but it was still in my hands. I didn't play well enough to win. I played the first match on the other court; the center court was a bit slower and I couldn't finish the points with a winner often enough."

About his goals for the season:

"This year I'm playing much better than before. I don't have a particular goal towards the ranking. I hope to play as well as I have recently and if I can do that my ranking will surely rise."

Hey everyone! :wavey:
Finally, no need a few days for myself. "La nuit porte conseil" (I don't know how to say that in English )
We are all different, so we have different reactions and feelings. I understand all the reactions, even the opposites.
Ernests needs time. And his fans too (so, no hasty judgment, please :awww:)

The feelings were devastating for me, during and right after the match (anger, disappointment, frustration and… resignation). Then, a few minutes after that, no feelings at all (I can't imagine Ernests' feelings —and Camilla ). I tried hard not to think about tennis in general. And it worked. I'm fine now.
This loss was a trial for all of us, but a good trial. I mean, now I think we are (all his fans) more devoted and united than ever, no?
No place for resentment (grudge) here. There is nothing to forgive (Di, don't worry :)). We are only a bunch of hotheads, that's all… :o
Sometimes, the words can be terrible, because they come from an immediate reaction. I'm pretty sure all it's OK now, for all of us

I'm thinking a lot about Ernests. I hope he is OK and re-motivated for the next tournaments. It's only the begining of the season, after all.

Big hug for you all

Hi, Im back from Zagreb, finally! And, despite what happened on Thursday, I must say Im pretty happy with my trip. Mostly because I saw Ernests in person, once again – which always gets me super-happy. Second, because I really enjoyed his first round match against Dima. I had a good spot and he played really good to me! As Cath already said, the construction of his game was good and so I was :woohoo: all the time. Well, after he lost the first set I was a bit worried, but still I knew he could win the match. It was then that I decided to whip out the Latvian flag from my purse (I hadn’t done that before, because I felt shy). I was like ‘maybe this will remind him he has to fight’. And it worked! Of course it was not the flag, it was all thanks to his marvellous game. But Im happy I had the flag with me. I hope he could felt there was someone supporting him, although I was quite quiet all the match.
Then the news that he would not have had to face Andreev in 2nd round came, and so I was even more excited – I let my imagination run wild and even daydreamed of him winning the tournament (that’s when I decided I would have stayed in Zagreb until he lost, ignoring all my other commitments at home for this week). You can figure how much I was “pumped up”.;)
But everything that rises must also come down, as they say. I guess I got that much disappointed after his loss against Dodig because I had too many expectations. I guess it must have been the same to many of you… I read someone thought, as me, that this could have been his first tourney.
About his second round, there’s nothing more to add to what Sandra already said. Her report of the match is way better than the one I could do, so thank you Sandra ;) And you all can also peacefully trust what Ernests himself said after the match, that he was SO upset after those line calls and the umpire overrulings. I was rather pissed about those things, too. Of course I was much more frustrated by his behaviour on court, because I think he can control himself more than that… but it’s ok. I mean, we all know how he is hot-headed and what he does is part of what he is. And, honestly, I love what he is, although I keep on being disappointed after losses (how could I not be, being his fan?).
Im thankful to all of you who felt sorry for me, but I need to say Im starting to think that, to me, it’s better attending to his lost matches than dealing with them being at home. I believe it’s because when you are there you can actually understand and perceive much more things about what’s going on.

Concerning what I read here (someone’s reaction to his loss), I can understand you – which doesn’t mean I can justify you, tho. When I read Nadia’s post, I felt totally in agreement with her, with every single point she made. So, no need to repeat what she wrote, but it’s like this in my opinion, too.

In the end, I think it’s always worth watching him play and supporting him, because, in spite of the losses, the bratting, the frustrating fear he might never achieve the result his tennis deserves, when Ernests plays at his best, there is no more beautiful player to watch.

So, come on, now, Erno: rock the SAP Open – for Edna’s pleasure!

EDIT: I just read the Andre Gomes analysis of the match…
Links:
Analysis before the Gulbis-Dodig match - here (http://andregomes.apostaganha.pt/atp-zagreb-tennis-pick-ernests-gulbis-vs-ivan-dodig/)
This should serve as a warning to anyone trying to foretell things about Erno. You end making a fool of yourself: that’s what happens when you break the 11th commandment: “You shall not predict God's Ernests Gulbis’ actions”. lol

The second point you could not have said better. When I was planning my trip to Memphis, I decided that even if he lost again in the second round (I SURE HOPE NOT!!! :armed:) it would still be worth going for the sheer pleasure of watching him play in person. I'm really psyched for it. :yeah:

Camilla, thank you very much for your report :) I'm glad you enjoyed your time there.

I'm also glad that Ernie is playing doubles again. I think the last time he played was when he got the title in Houston. Anyway, he was practicing together with Kunitsyn in the off season so presumably they should play well together :yeah:

He will also play the Doubles (last match on Courtside Club 16 — matches start at: 4:00 PM). What a day for Ernests!

Hey, he will play against a brazilian! :)
This year is kind of "come back year" for Ricardo Mello. I don´t know why, but the last couple of years he was reaaaally bad ranked.
But he won a challenger here in Brazil, Aberto de São Paulo, in january.

Well, since you're in Italy (I believe :p) I think you're ahead 8 hours. Because I know New York is ahead of California by 3 hours, and England is ahead of NY for 5 hours :p I hope that's correct.

ETA: and I estimated that each match before his would run for about an hour. So I'd say he's on at about 12PM California time.

I don't know if you can fix it, but the person who leaves a comment needs to enter the URL of their blog. that's what I did but then an error occurred. I hate when that happens  maybe my kind of blog is just none of the allowed URLs

Hello everyone, I've not had much time to post over the last few days but really glad to see Ernie beat Dent as he can still be a tricky customer over the other side of the net.
I love your blog Edna, your comment about rocking heads and dancing bananas really made me laugh. The person next to you would think "WTH?"

Ernests will play against Del Potro on the Stadium (not before 1:00 PM). And there will be a livestream!

I think you have to have some money in your bet365 account in order to be able to see the livestream :( But perhaps channelsurfing or another free resource will pick up the stream, too :D

you only need to register. they are gonna ask you to put money in your account in order to complete the registration, but it will be complete even without doing that. just stop after the first step of the registration, not like I did

yeah. it's very tricky, they make it sound like you have to make a minimum deposit of 10 euros, so I clicked on it. but then I remembered ellen told me she didn't have to pay anything and asked her, but it was already too late. I wasn't even sure I actually validated that step, until I got the receipt from my account. I asked them if I could get it back, but that's not possible with a deposit below 125 euros..

Oh dear... I wonder if there is any difference between putting a deposit and not putting one.
I was nearly tricked too, I didnt want to have an aco**** after seeing that I had to put in a deposit. But I got myself out of the trap in the end.

There's no need for it to start earlier, as 2PM EST = 1pm CST = 7pm GMT, so channelsurfing starts at the same time as the del Potro challenge.

pfff for some reason I keep mixing up the different time zones.Cath, Im even worse at dealing with time zones, so you can be relieved... just think I usually rely on you!;)

lucky you :p oh well I'm happy it's not more than 10 euros ;)O-oh, here we go, the first stage of a new disease called "spending money like Ernests does". When you reach the final step, you'll be like "oh, luckily its just some thousands dollars; and there's basically no difference in having them or not, you know..."

:p

erno won a second round guys you're not gonna believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!
he just won his double's match, 6/3 6/7(3) 10/6
I tried to follow the scores, but in the end they were all messed up. and I didn't know who was serving when  erno kinda served twice in a row unless I don't get the doubles rules, that's not right lol
he started with his service game though and made 2 aces, 4 points on his first serve. they actually took the first 6 points of the match. I'm not gonna say anything about the rest of the match, as I'm not sure about anything
so it looks like he's in the semi-final here. who would have thought :p

-Evita-

Just kidding. May this bring luck and determination to him for singles too :)

Yay, Erno/Kuni! :bigclap: I guess this is because the doubles court is wider than the singles court. And because of this, all Erno's beautiful shots which were just out, playing on singles court, were now in.

Whoaa this is great  Go Ernie and Kuni! Next up: Fish/Knowles

And please don't tell me they'll broadcast it  Couldn't they just schedule their match last, no? 2nd match is really bad, unless Sela-Stepanek play for 4 hours

I think I do know why...
According to the tv schedule in Singapore, there's a live match at 1am which I presume is Stepanek's.
Then there's live football at 2.55am.
Followed by live tennis again, at 5am (Roddick's).
Which means between 2.55 and 5, I highly doubt that they would broadcast Ernests' match.
That is also why you want Ernests' match to be at 5am??

stella, does he play doubles? I don't know where you always get the draws from, but I always get "tounament information not yet available" when I click on the link on atp
