Can you go way down to Nadal (99 and hopefully 100 in some 11 hours time)?

JediFed
01-26-2010, 12:26 AM
He's still behind Hewitt (126) and behind Roddick (106).

Those are the only other actives who are close. Safin only had 95. Hewitt needs another 12 more to pass Borg.

Table corrected. Nadal, Kafelnikov and Nastase are all off the list while tennis Legendas Ferreira, Martin and Smith added. Roddick now just 10 behind Chang for the 'One shot wonder' award.

To put it this way, 120 is the equivalent of 24 semifinals.

Highest man without a slam, none other than Henman who had 98. :)

Where do you guys think Federer will end up on this list? My bet is he'll surpass Connors either at Wimbledon or the US Open next year.

V.H.

If Federer wins every GS match he will surpass:
Sampras (203)in Wimbledon this year
Lendl (222) in Australian Open 2011
Agassi (224) in French Open 2011 and
Connors (233) in US Open 2011

Records still coming :)

Agassi (224) in French Open 2011 and
Connors (233) in US Open 2011

He doesn't even need to do that. He could 'just' get to the final of the remaining majors this year, and then to the quarters of all four next year. That'd equal Connors' 233 at the US Open in 2011.

Amazing that this longevity record is now almost a shoe-in!

Rafa will be 21st player on the list tomorrow and,if I'm not wrong, only 5th with 100 Grand Slam victories before 24th birthday (Borg,Wilander,Becker,Edberg)

JediFed
05-25-2010, 07:18 AM
More significantly, if Roger makes the semis, he will become the first player to reach 200 wins in his 20's. Lendl was the second fastest, reaching 200 at the 1991 US Open, at the age of 31 7 months.

If he averages a SF/slam over his next 7 slams, and 1 win, or 2 finals, Roger has an outside chance of owning the record outright by September 2011, just after his 30th birthday. The earliest he can acheive it is in Wimbledon of next year.

I was wrong about Edberg.... Borg,Becker,Wilander and now Rafa are the only players with 100 Grand Slam victories at the age of 23

Nadal already caught Roddick (age 28) and could tie Courier tonight, who won #118 at age 28. Hewitt should enter the top 10 soon, having won at least 8 matches for 11 years running.

He will surely get there. :) As for single slams, I'm always astonished by Connors' 98 US open wins, and 182 wins at Wim+USO combined.
Federer could get the records for most Aus Open wins and French Open wins, both standing at 56 and held by Edberg resp. Vilas if I'm not mistaken. Needs another 2 resp. 13 to tie them.

Federer just 5 behind Lendl and Agassi for the most at all 4 slams. Also, just 20 shy of Connors.

Needs another good year to be top 5 in all 4 slams, which has never been done.

Edit, tied with Lendl for 7 consecutive years with at least 20 GS wins.

Big year coming up. Has a chance to pass Agassi on hard and Sampras on Grass/Wimbly, and Connors overall.

I don't think there's been anybody who's done as well on the slams as he has.

Congrats on tying Connors, Fed.

At RG - Fed could pass, Connors total, Lendl, and Agassi for total on the dirt. Not bad for someone who isn't a claycourter. ;) Could climb as high as second all-time, behind Vilas.

That is really surprising when you think about it. Connors plays for 20+ years and wins eight, Sampras plays for a much shorter time and wins 14, and still Connors has more wins pr average.

It's one of the reasons why Connors is vastly underrated in the GOAT discussions. In 35 consecutive slams entered, he fell short of the QF only once.

Federer has an amazing record of 33/33 slams, but, still has a little ways to go to break Connor's record. Two more slam QFs will do it.

Kevin Curren has the honor of being the only man in 35 slams entered to defeat Jimmy Connors before the QF. On court 2 the 'Graveyard of champions'.

If I am correct, Roger have 34 of the last 35 only a loss in Roland Garros in 2004

Thanks for the update! Fed has 68 in AO, though. Also Guillermo Vilas has 58 in FO. He used to have 56 because the FO 1972 was incorrectly listed on ATP.com as having a 64-man draw.

Yes. And Nadal needs to win to achieve the same.

It is a bit strange the RG has a record as "low" as 58. In the US Open, Federer is just 6th with 64 wins. In Wimbledon, Sampras' 63 is only good enough for 4th. The AO having 56 as the old record before Fed improved it was less surprising, considering the lower status it used to have.

Not really surprising. The biggest champion was Borg (who quit at 26). Lendl did well, but was done by 30. Since then there hasn't really been a significant star at the event.

A quick q. In open era slams, were it always best of 5 for 7 matches to win the title? And top players were represented?

No and no. Australian Open had just six matches for a long time, 1982 was the first year with seven rounds, plus a lot of the non-Aussie top players were missing until the late 80s. Also, it was Bo3 in early rounds not only in AO but in a couple of the others as well. In AO it was Bo3 in R1 (R64 then) until 1975.

US Open had Bo3 in R1 and R2 in 1978. And Bo3 even in R3 in 1977 and earlier.

RG had Bo3 in R1 and R2 until 1976.

Federer needs just 2 more wins at RG to have the most wins on all 3 surfaces at 60, passing Connors. Another Connors' record will hopefully fall.

Connors never had this particular record, I believe. Vilas has 75 clay wins.

I think that he means at least 60 wins in each surface, Connors have the record with at least 59 wins (107 G, 59 C, 67 H)

Ah, yes, you're right. That makes more sense. Thanks for clearing it up for me :hatoff:

Two wins in the FO and Hewitt becomes only the 7th man with 30 wins in all of them.
