If Roger wind the AO, would you accept that '08 was a slump?

That would be two grand slams in a row. '08 started off badly with Roger getting sick and all and he was playing catchup ever since then. Not that it matters much to me, just interested to see the response here.

And his decline is completely normal and obvious since 2007 (he was quite lucky that year and in 2008, he was only unlucky that ... Nadal was there, and some other players -among them another great player : Murray- whose game doesn't suit him).

Well the critics argue that he didnt do well in the events outside of the GS. And lets face it he didnt live up to is own high standards. The point im trying to make is that he was sick and had a loss of confidence, so it could simply have been a loss of form instead of a decline. If he wins the AO i feel its pretty safe to say it was just a slump. Thank you for your input.

I dont necessarily agree with you. The mono might have been over but that didnt mean he immediately regained confidence again. He said in an interview he's never worked as hard as he did n 2008 to get back into form and it looks like its starting to pay off. Lets wait till after the AO and talk again.

I find it odd anyway to call a year a slump in which Federer player won one slam, reached the final in two others, and reached the semifinal in the fourth. Any other player and we would say this is fabulous. It's only because Federer had gotten us used to such absurd standards that some consider 2008 kinda weak.

I personally do not believe that Federer will be able to return to his pre-2008 domination; for this the field has become too strong at the top end and, well, he is getting a little older. But I'm glad that he hasn't lost it and will be in the mix whereever there is a grand slam title to be won. I count on Federer for at least 2009 and, hopefully, 2010 as well.

More generally, with the great champions Federer and Nadal, the dangerous Djokovic, the "old" battle horse Roddick, and aspiring and capable players like Murray, Tsonga, Simon, del Potro (yes, he got a lesson today), mens' tennis is in the best shape in years if not decades. Enjoy it as long as it lasts (unfortunately ladies' tennis is not in good shape).

Roger, as I previously mentioned, suffered from "Roger-nucleosis".

And Rafa lifted his game...and showed at the most critical of moments that when it comes to the clutch, he's far ahead of Roger. THAT is why he lost to 0-4 last year...and THAT is why Roger ended the year #2.
