Super defensive ability

I don't want to get flamed, so this is a really really serious thread! What I've only noticed recently is that the players who give Federer the most trouble are the best at defense against his big forehands and serves.

Nadal
Djokovic
Monfils

One thing they all have is incredible lower body flexiblity to do a defensive split with 2-handed backhand. How many times did Nadal burn Federer at French Open and Wimbly finals with this move?

never in doubt.

Federer is a pretty good defender himself.

There's a pretty obvious omission from that list. Do I even have to say it?

never in doubt, but I do agree.

I'd also add Simon and an on form Canas to that list.

Karlovic, Blake and Roddick have beaten Federer in the last year who are also renowned for their awesome defensive capabilities.

yeah, that's because their attacking ability is quite lacking sometimes, specially on Karlovic and Black, not that much on Roddick ;)

That's true. Perhaps the OP is thinking of some other player...

Or perhaps the OP is a troll that doesn't know what he's talking about. Hmmm....

I think if you look at their history all the sets have been rather close, given one or two. I think what the OP was trying to say is these guys have the tools to give Federer trouble and make him word harder than usual.

Which is why people like gonzo who only strive to hit that forehand winner will never ever win anything big.

orangehat - before Nadal came along players like Gonzo could win big because nobody played that type of defense. Now to Federer's credit he still manages to play pretty amazing defense w/o doing the splits.
