Is it safe to say Verdasco is this year's AO surprise finalist?

Beating the undisputed favourite he bangs his way straight to the top. Murray bandwagon died, long live the Verdasco bandwagon.

no, if nadal and verdasco meet nadal is going to destroy him.

No chance..first he needs to quit being a little girl when it comes to the first serve. never seen a player that rather spin the first than hit a 2nd.

It is safe thay Henman-British chokefest will rule the british players forever. :o

About Murray by a friend:

Murray is a great player. His only problem is that he is british. :(

What if he actually makes it to the final first?

Besides, he is not as much of a surprise as Baghdatis, Gonzalez or Tsonga. Those guys did come from almost nowhere. Verdasco was at least showing signs of greatness.

But yeah, let's wait until he makes the final before you start with this.

Naaah Nathii, Fer will still lose to Rafa.

Gonzalez didn't come out of nowhere. Earlier Safin or Schuettler weren't tipped as the finalists but they made it. This year the big four were the favourites to the final, anyone of of big four is a surprise finalist.

if he somehow makes it to the final he's getting trashed by whoever is waiting there.

Baggy - surprise
Gonzo - no surprise considering his form late 2006, I knew he had a shot
Tsonga - highly touted since July 2007

Fernando Verdasco definitely have the weapon to challenge Nadal. His weakness from the past have always been too passive. He does not use his forehand nearly enough to do damage to his opponents. It's so obvious he can smash the crap out of the forehands, he just needs to do it more and he can win against anybody.

Nando has pretty good chance to beat Blake and Simon but not Nadal and Tsonga, Simon in turn has good chance to beat Nadal, Blake has a good chance to beat Tsonga, Tsonga has a good chance to beat Verdasco, so everything is conditional :p

Verdasco will be the "surprise" finalist this year.

Fed def Verdasco 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 to take his 14th slam. :worship:

It would be a great "Surprise"!!!
I don't mind any one of the them to be the finalist except Nadal from the top half!
Go Simon! Go Verdasco! Go Blake! Go Tsonga!

Of course let's start the Verdasco Nadal thread right now. I mean, Verdasco is only playing Tsonga in the next round. A nobody.

That is fairly disturbing. Anyway, I'm not really bothered if there isn't a surprise finalist. Though Verdasco could give tsonga a run for his money

Nando has a good shot, it all depends on whether he can beat Rafa or not ;)

I don't see him making the final but you never know. The win over Murray and Agassi's magic words (whatever they may be lol)can only be good for his confidence.

Not a surprise for me. He has some good performances last year like in Wimbledon and beating Murray means nothing to me. But if he defeats Tsonga then yes :p

No way he beats Tsonga or Nadal.

Imo he can win it tbh, just has to play it right, and keep at a high standard every set.

oh what a lame thread. Theres no surprise involved in Verdasco's win over Murray. He's been training so hard and it showed last night. But i still dont see him beating Rafa the way he's been playing...

Could Nando be the next surprise finalist at the AO? Considering the last few years and the way he is playing it is quite possible.

We still have to wait. He has Tsonga. Then Nadal.

TankingTheSet
01-27-2009, 12:08 AM
Because he probably has to play Nadal in the SF the betting odds are very high on this happening (about 1 in 15 to reach the final). I think the chances are a little better in reality but still a pretty long shot.

A lefty-lefty semi-final could be interesting, but I doubt he would make the final ..

Simon or Del Potro reaching the final would be as unexpected as Gonzo making the final in 07.

He was on fire towards the end of 06 and was in the opposite half to the overwhelming favourite after all.
