Never in doubt, fun to see Haas "super backhand" once again beeing utterly destroyed by the Nadal topspin.

May I add 52 winners and 8 unforced errors. Amazing stats. Nadal could dethrone the GOAT Andy in semifinal.

I just don't get all the talk of Haas' backhand being so good. Every time I have watched him play I have not been terribly impressed by it. He shanks them just like Federer and often hit with little to no penetration with the shot. This is a horrendous match up for Haas. Rafa's backhand is better than Haas' forehand and Rafa's forehand is way better than Haas' backhand.

Awesome Nadal, he's gonna be tough to beat this tournament.

It was a horrible match to watch though, let's be honest. Nadal dominated with the forehand, just windmilling the topspin at Haas hitting winner after winner. Nadal just had to get a serve in, be it first or second, and Haas would hit a weak chipped return which Nadal would dispatch with ease. Disappointed Haas didn't attack more, but he never really had a chance.

Instead Haas backhand is slightly more consistent and he is better at the backhand down the line, but overall I would never rate Haas backhand over Federers. I think the winner of Murray/Rafa will win the tourney. Rafa looks in good form, Haas was pretty pathetic. The result was similar to what happened last time these 2 played if I remember correctly, I'm not sure why people thought Haas would win(or even take a set).

As I said, Murray-Nadal could be the pseudo-final. I'm just not convinced with Djoko right now, and Federer's record against those 2 speaks for itself.

Haas backhands make Federer's look good

It sure did, I had been waiting for this moment because of the arrogant comments on Federers backhand by that Haas groupie, Leng jai. Most overrated backhand in the open era, never thought it was anything special. Federer atleast has the greatest slice in the game and mindblowing passing shots.

I agree completely with your assessment and comparison.

Given though that Haas was supposed to have one of the finest 1 handers in the game, has the 2 hander officially trumped the 1 hander. Is the hander officially an inferior stroke? I appreciate that it was Rafa's forehand that was going to Haas' backhand usually. But the question still stands. I am musing over it more than anything rather than looking for a definitive answer, which I don't think can be given.

Gasquet's backhand is great, but he isn't reaching the latter stages of any big tournaments.

Yes I think the one hander is officialy dead and I am quite sad about it because I have a one hander myself and I love players who play that way. The game has become faster, with more crazy spins created by modern raquets. Short backswing is always better than the long onehanded backswing. Even Gasquet with his supernatural onehander needs to be so far behind from the baseline to have time to make his long backhand swings. I think Federer will be remembered as the last legend who used the onehanded backhand, but I hope I am wrong

Yeah, I dont know. I think Nadal gets kind of tired when it comes to semifinals and finals. His game is too physical, if he survives lets say a 4 set match against Simon and a 4-5 set marathon against Murray, how much energy will be left for the final?

- The last time Rafa lost to a one-handed backhand was against Youzhny (First week of January 2008). And we all know the circumstances around this loss.

I personally feel, if its a Nadal - Murray match, and both play their best tennis, the winner wont be walking on two legs. So I wouldn't say that the winner of that match would win the tournament (atleast not if Murray wins that match).

If Murray wins it, the final result would be similar to what happened at the last slam :p

If you think Haas lost this match because of having a one-handed backhand then you are deluded. You WANTED to see it that way to support your argument, but give Haas a 4 handed backhand and he still would have lost.

Watch Nalbandian play Nadal around on the court with his backhand and tell me if a one handed backhand could do the same?

Anyway, if you want proof that the one handed backhand is dying just see how many young players are coming up with a one handed backhand. In the top 100 Gasquet is the youngest guy with a onehanded and he is turning 23 this year.

Who is the most successful player ever in tennis? Sampras. 1 handed backhand.

One handed is just as good as two handed, they are equal, they each have their strengths and weaknesses and if you think that a one hander cannot do this or that, then it's your opinion, not fact. Nadal has been bagelled by Federer and Gaudio (TWICE!) before with a one handed backhand. Gasquet has consistently taken sets from him, but he has no mental strength whatsoever.

We're definitely going to get a Nadal/Murray SF. At the moment I just can't see Nadal beating Murray. Murray can handle Nadal’s game and spin remarkably well. Murray reads the game as well as Nadal & Federer, and has no true weaknesses apart from letting his emotions get the best of him from time to time.

He has an answer to just about anything his opponent can throw at him, remember how Nadal appeared lost in the USO semi?

Anyway, I really hope they make it to the semis, trust me when I say it’s going to be a 5-set classic match of the tournament!

I agree with you, should Nadal make it to the final, he’ll win. He’s become a serious contender on hardcourts in the last 6-7 months.

That's a bad argument.
Sampras won so much becuase of his serve, volleys and big forehand - those were his major strengths, in addition to his athletiscm.
His backhand was many times shown as a weakness.
So your statement in no way shows that "one handed is just as good as two handed"

And yes, there are things that one handers can't (or at least haven't been seen) do even nearly as well double handers (if history and current players are anything to go by), and probably vice versa.
e.g. return - putting real pressure on opponents and even hitting winners off the backhand
return of 1st and 2nd serves like e.g. murray, agassi. have there been any single handers that did that to the
same extent?

Forehander
01-24-2009, 03:57 PM
Haas's forehand was too weak to challenge Nadal. His backhand was alright. If Federer's forehand was given to him he would have pummeled most of the balls Nadal sent short with his forehands.

- The last time Rafa lost to a one-handed backhand was against Youzhny (First week of January 2008). And we all know the circumstances around this loss.
- Rog has a losing record against Nad&Mur 8:17

Good luck, Rog. You are so winning this.

Not only had Rog excaped playing Murray in the semis but would have had a day rest more before the final. Rafa and Murray are so lucky.

Is this a thread about Nadal's win over Haas or Federer's draw and AO chances.

***

I didn't get to see the match, but from the pieces of Nadal's other two matches, it seems like his opponents are not mixing things up, which would account for him being able to get set and then crack such an extreme (for him) number of winners. Not taking anything away from him, but his draw takes a big step up against Gonzo (his first three rounds have been against rankings of 75, 92, 79). I don't think the winner trend will continue there, certainly not in the QFs against Monfils/Simon.

Another amazingly eloquent interview from the genius...

You proably give brilliant interviews in Spanish when the Spanish press asks you questions, no?

Haas was the better player in the first set. Nadull is such a moonballer.

Why would anyone have to give interviews in Spanish?

It's bullshit.

I still speak Spanish way better than Nadull speaks English.

Nadal will be crushed when he faces a real player. He always gets a quarter filled with jokes who can't play tennis.

While it's true that Haas is not a juggernaut in tennis right now, it doesn't take anything away from Nadal's win.
People forget that Nadal made the semis of Cincinnati and won Beijing: both times on very fast hard courts. He has improved a lot and with his strong desire to win, it's not impossible for him to stun the world and win a hard court slam.

Personally, I don't expect him to win but to say he has zero chance is an exaggeration.

Interesting...so how would the draw suppose to look like first three rounds, that he would face "real" players?

Nadal's performance was not particularly impressive. The way Haas' shots were sitting up, it must have felt like Nadal was playing on clay, except this time his own shots will go through the court more so Haas had even less of a chance. His groundstrokes almost always lacked penetration and Nadal is the best at creating his own pace from crappy, nothingy responses.

Todays performance told us nothing more than we already knew about his chances to win this tournament.

I'm confused, I thought Haas was supposed to be Rafa's first big test? Such devastating, barbaric form from Rafa, I fear for Murray in the semis. Wait, no I don't. Rip him to shreds, Rafa, please? :boxing:

Maybe you missed it but Nadal played absolutely amazing today and Haas wasn't bad in the few rounds, either. And yes, Nadal is one of the top favorites now to win the title. :D

Haas didn't play badly really. Some of his net-play was superb. But Nadal was just relentless in this match...it is going to take a towering performance to take him out.

Maybe you missed it, but Nadal has been "a favorite" on hardcourts for a while. Soundly beating players of world rankings 75-92-79 doesn't suddenly earn Nadal a lot of -new- respect. What's next, the earth shattering announcement that "Murray has a chance at winning Wimbledon" after he torches Kendrick in Wimbledon R1?

While it's true that Haas is not a juggernaut in tennis right now, it doesn't take anything away from Nadal's win.

I don't think a lot of people believe he has 0% chance. I think a lot of people are over-reacting to his wins and stats though (against no better than 75th in the world), and if it wasn't for the bloated Murray hype, he is arguably the MTF favorite at this point. Still, it only makes the next couple rounds even more exciting.

that one is for the MTF archives...

After 9-11, they banded together like no city I've seen here in the States. This has nothing to do with bombings...all I was trying to say is that even those fans from NY who were not there tonight will be strongly against Novak from this point forward. Why? Because they will believe that some of their brethren were attacked...and will not stand ideally by.
