A poll to follow up on the "charisma" thread. I picked 10 who got mentioned frequently there. If you think someone else is the most charismatic, please specify.

None of these guys are terrible charismatic. Safin has a raw animal aura about him; it's more of a sex appeal than charisma. Federer has zero charisma. Nor Nadal.

Lendl - there was a guy with charisma, because he was intelligent and witty. Kind of sly too. Muster had charisma.

Roddick has some - it's apparent in his interviews, but it's undermined by his brash tendencies. In other words, he's too "American", but I still like the guy.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I think Gasquet has charisma, although he is shy in his interviews. There are a couple (whe he is more relaxed) where he lets his sense of humour and personality show and he is so endearing and I think quite charismatic. I expect we all have different views on what charisma actually is anyway.
As for animal magnetism, Marat everytime.

Btw, in my book charisma is more closely related to sex appeal than to giving articulate interviews.

That excludes the entire group that has no interest in sex appeal and I assume there's quite a few straight guys here, as well as in crowds on the stands. For me, it's a combination of a lot of things that combine to projecting an interesting and likable personality both on and off court. Sex appeal might help their cause, but alone will not do the trick.

The Pro
01-25-2009, 02:24 PM
Roddick has confidence in abundance, but is far too sarcastic to be truly charsmatic.

Nadal as charm and maturity, but is kind of stiff and serious at times.

I would say Safin, I imagine he could walk into a room of strangers and put a smile on the face of the first one he spoke to, just with wit and charisma.

Tursonov too, when he's not screaming at umpires.

Charisma, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholders. A poll will reflect the participants' average perception, no more no less.

True, but that doesn't change the fact sex appeal is unlikely to play a role for straight guys in this case and even straight women/gay guys are expected to have a broader perspective once they are past adolescence (or I am overly optimistic about human race )

I'd say Tsonga, IMO. Djokovic, Safin, and Roddick have a unique persona but I don't see them as truly being charismatic. Neither Federer nor Nadal is charismatic in my opinion. But of course this being MTF, all the fanboys and girls will vote for their favorite.

reggie1
01-25-2009, 03:10 PM
Tsonga comes across as a natural leader (most of the other French players say this) so he probably does have charisma imo.

Yup my fave Nalby interview from last year just shows it off

Q. You had a great fall last year. Some players, I'm wondering if you think they play better in the beginning of the year or end of the year?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Who?

Q. Just players in general. Are they better at spacing out how they play over the entire year or do you think...
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, it just depends. You never know. Sometimes you think you're great in the beginning, and you didn't get the best results in the year. They come in later.
Depends the surface, depends whether you like to play more. You never know.

Q. Some players, they win more titles in the first half and some in the second half. Do you think of certain players as being good starters and others as good finishers?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No. Depends.

Q. You didn't feel that way last fall?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No.

I would say that it is a quality closer related to possessing an aura of confidence, persuasiveness, assertiveness, intelligence, effortlessness and, in general, presence.

Roddick is pretty articulate, but he doesn't have the bodily presence to qualify as charismatic. His body language is pretty rough.

Relaxed, easy-going wit is something I frequently associate with charisma.

Again...charisma..Merriam Webster dictionary

: a special magnetic charm or appeal

Most of the players mentioned are fun/interesting to watch, but in terms of magnetic appeal...the kind who remain elusive, whose mind remains a mystery, who attracts people on message boards like flies even though he's losing, who try to understand him & gets followed around by hoards of fans.

Only one
