is it me or has simon's forehand improved this year?

Too many errors from Simon in the first/second sets, rather uncharacteristic. However, the key thing was he played the big points well despite this, especially that first set tie break where he went straight to a 6-0 lead, and saving 10 of 12 break points.

In the third set Simon was simply glorious. Masterclass of variety and precision flat hitting. If he meets Nadal playing like that, he'll win easily.

i donn't know which game did you watch but:
1. in tie break ancic didn't any first serve
2.ancic had more errors than simon
3.simon should loose 3rd set easily

simon played very good(not the best he can),but like simon played today ancic in top form would win against him.

As he always would, given a more aggressive game. However, Simon still dumped far too many into the net, by his standards. In 4 sets against Guccione he made 15 errors, here it was mid 30s in three sets.

I'm really surprised of the ability of Gillu to return almost everytime great serves also

Hes game is increasing yet, the only problem is he really has problems during derbies, probably for former equilibriums when they were children

and Monfils is playing so good as well, is trying to become more offensive, that was the key to improve his game and results

Simon should be able to use sharp angles with hot shots dtl after, hitting when Monfils will be in the wrong part of the court because of his run before to hit the sharp cross

That was a frustrating match for Mario, he served against the wind in the first 6 points of the tie-breaker, in every chance he got to break he either missed easy shots, got a netcord against or Simon came up with the goods and after he got broken at 2-2 in the third he just gave up. At this point, if you scratch the tie-breaker they had won the same amount of points yet he was down 2 sets and a break. He definetely didn´t deserve to lose in straight sets.

ancic had 6 break points in first two games on simon's serve in 3rd but didnt convert any of them(he had good chances of some on them) while simon had zero in first 2 games on ancic serve.after ancic didn't convert break chances everybody(because tennis is tennis) knows that he will loss his serve(0:2 in sets and that unconvert break balls,so player blow up).simon had 2 break balls in 3rd set and convert both of them.

ancic just need to keep his nerves,his tennis is good and it will be like it was.he need to not miss break balls and 1st serves in crucial moments.

I was surprised to see the attacking Simon. I always thought of him as a pusher, but this is the first match of him I saw since about a year (unfortunately I missed the end of 2008, but of course I know the scores) and he was hitting some nice finishing forehands and especially backhands.

I still think he doesn't belong to the very top (Top20 for sure, but Top10 ?) and his fans should be happy as long as it lasts.

The match was closer than the scoreline suggests and Simon was just 100% effective on important points.

Well trust me, you shouldn' make any judgments on that basis because you missed his best part! He was playing easily top 10 and 5 tennis at the end of 08, and as been much more aggresive than what he was yesterday.
