Another Surprise Finalist (Does The Streak Continue?)

We all know that AO is the best GS for young improving players or underdogs. We have seen Johansson, Clement or Schuettler in the past. Also last few yers there was always somebody in the final whom we could call a surprise.
So, what about this year? We have Cilic, Gulbis, Nishikori and others.
Does anyone believe that a winner or at least a finalist of AO 2009 could be somebody else than Murray, Nadal, Federer or Djokovic?

I really don't see anybody challenging the great four, maybe apart from Monfils, but he's no stranger to the big stage anymore having reached the semis at French Open!

Don't forget Lapentti's run to the last 4 in 99. ;)

It's possible that we'll see a surprise finalist, but all of the top players appear to be in good form this year so it's less open than in the past.

Don't put Gonzo in the same list, please ;)

Maybe Gonzo's run to the final was a surprise, but at least he was seeded in the 20 first places and had an spectacular end of 2006 season. Not like Baggy or Tsonga, who were unseeded and not well known yet.

The longer this type of streak continues the better the odds of it being broken eventually.

However, this year Murray might make the final, but he would not be such a big surprise finalist as the others mentioned in the thread title.

Baghdatis, Gonzalez, Tsonga... Who's next and why?

And for arguments sake you can't say 2 of the Big 4 will be there in the end. Humor me, yourself, and others.

Personally I think Monfils has the best chance with the draw he currently has.

It's hard to see Federer and Djokovic or Nadal and Murray lose.

Yea, and it was also hard seeing those 3 guys get to the Final of the Aussie Open 3 years running wasn't it? Anything is possible.

Since when are top 8 seeds "surprise finalists"?

Roddick and JMDP would only be mildly surprising.

Since the media are pretty certain the finalists will come from any of the the "Top 4", with Murray being the favourite :p, I would say the rest of the Top 8 would be surprise.

But yes, you do have a valid point. ;)

Do you honestly think anyone outside the top 4 has been picked to go to the final? Then it is a surprise finalist. A surprise is defined as: a sudden unexpected event. If Roddick makes the final are you going to say you expected it? If no then he is a surprise finalist.

Who was the guy who said Gonzalez wasn't a surprise when he made his run. Sure he was, no one was picking that monstrous forehand to take down player after player. Guy was a thing of beauty to watch for 2 weeks.

Perhaps you may like consider players outside the Top 4 being a surprise finalist. Many of course would be surprises. I on the otherhand would not consider Roddick a surprise finalist, due to his current ranking and past experience in GS.

This of course is a subjective view.

It would be a surprise if Nadal was finalist at a hard court slam.
