Ripping forehand winners from all over the court.
Backhand could be better though.

Karanusic is lucky if he wins 5 games.

the last two sets weren't as close as the score indicates

The score is misleading... Rafa was just bored out of his mind for 4 games  Seriously, impossible to tell anything definitive from this match, but the courts seemed to suit him fine and he's hitting the ball MUCH better than during last year's Open already. Some of those forehands (like the 2nd to last point) were  And he played a stunning JesusFed(Rafa) point which ended with a lob in that third set :worship:

Forehand, forehand, forehand, forehand.

Smooth start from Rafa

Rafa without breaking a shadow of a sweat.

Absolutely pathetic performance from C.Rochus. This, my friends, is someone who is only in it for the money. Absolutely no inspiration whatsoever. Made Rafa look like Karlovic.

Nadal seemed to be very confortable in this court. And yes, hard to be 100% focused in a match like this, that's the only reason Rochus could hold serve a few times.

Past years Rafa wasn't such a killer player in hardcourts, even with such inferior rivals he would never finish a match so quickly, due to less aggressive game he would spend 2 hours and end 63 64 63. If he wants to win a HC slam, he really needs to play like this. And he's #1, so he's supossed to play like this, with many more winners than his rival.

But let's see what happens when he faces real opposition.

rochus didn't even try. he made renquist look like a top 10 player.

cant determine rafa's form yet. its easy to stroke fh winners when the other guy is a sitting duck and when there is absolutely no pressure.

rafa is moving and striking the ball well. He seems fresh and will be a threat.

Nice start for Rafa, he's doing well to not being exhausted in last rounds, we all know he wants to win he has to come fresh to the second week of the GS.

The Top 100's Bagel Boy knew going into the match that he was going to be cannon fodder, and that is exactly what he was. It is not that he wasn't trying; he just already resigned in the fact that he would be demolished beforehand and it showed. Rochus really isn't someone to show a lot of smiles on court, so when he did it when winning his first game it was telling.

Nadal was impressive, but needs to wait until the 3R for at least some sort of opposition. If he meets counterpunchers without a big serve, without a lot of power and without a lot of variety to their game (Rochus and Karanusic both qualify for this description, IMO), he will breeze. If anything, I think losing four games is more than I expected. Would not have been shocked at all had this been a triple bagel.

Anyway, this should never have been a night match.

He beat Serra by the exact sale scoreline last year even though he played like crap throughout the entire tournament:shrug:

At 6-0 2-0, I was reminded of those old Hollywood epics where Christians have lions unleashed upon them in Roman arenas. As other posters have mentioned it was wrong-not to mention cruel-of the organizers to schedule this as a night match. It could have been a lot worse than it was, however, and at least Rochus got to leave the court smiling instead of being aflame with embarassment.

Aside from Nadal showing everyone that he's fresh and eager, there was little other indication of what kind of challenge he's going to be able to mount in the fortnight. I'm looking forward to the possible Haas match to see where Nadal's really at.

If it turns out that challenger players suffer greatly under the new points system then C. Rochus presents a strong case for this being a very good idea.

Christophe Rochus is such a lame player. Such a horrible attitude this guy has. Why even bother to show up?:o

C. Rochus is not relly a GS-level player. I´m sure the top seeds are happy to get an easy first round match, but I´m also pretty sure that Rafa would have liked to get just a little tougher match to get some more match practice for the next rounds. This was no better than a normal practice session for him.

Same old BS.

Let's wait till Rafa faces Simon or some other tough opponent.

I don't think Haas, if he makes it to the 3rd round, will be tough.

Rochus is just too small and weak. Mentally weak as well. Only thing he's got is a little talent.

It won't stop Rafatards from claiming this match means anything about his current form. :p

oh please. The guy is in his thirties. The same as Santoro. Nadal is only fierce for men in their thirties. Pffftt. I won't say that he's doing well just based on this match.

Yes he looked very good in this match, even though it was against a nothing opponent. The most surprising statistic of all was the 10 aces. When was the last time he hit more than 4 or 5 in a match?

Let's see how he does vs. tougher competition this AO because on hardcourts he tends to hit a lot of mid-court balls.

Not impressed. Not convinced he's improved.
Lets see him do that to Haas or Tsonga. In all likelihood, the moonballer will return then.
