Good Win played well to be honest moved much better then usual. something like 36 winners and 26 unforced errors.

yes he did play well. Very emotionally composed as well. Navarro fought hard but against a consistent Safin, it was not enough.

So serious, Marat. I like the look of it :yippee:

But honesty, I thought his movement was poor..

He looked completely disinterested out there. If you don't want to play, then don't.

Served well, but in the third set that's pretty much all he did. Congrats though; if he can fulfil his potential he can go far.

Navarro is a funny player, he pushes himself into the net but he isn't a good volleyer at all. Many baseliners have better volley technique than the Spaniard.

me too, but I saw only parts of the first set, so my impressions might be wrong.

You know, it's hard to stay focused against guy who you know, won't do any damage to you. Anyway, good win, I liked it and I am looking forward to the match against Federer.

That was not my impression at all. Are you sure you're not mistaking the serious, composed Marat for a disinterested one? ;)

Marat played ok for first round. More or less consistent with no lapses.. forehand held up ok.

what match did you guys watch??

it was a pretty crappy match overall with hardly any rallies except for the third set. marat looked bored, navarro looked like a future player with all the hustling and bustling to no avail.

Well, you might call him composed for the lack of tantrums and outbursts of temper. I thought he just looked plain bored.

Navarro definitely is a very different kind of player. His volleys aren't that good, and he has little reach at the net, but the very queerness of his game style is very unsettling to many players. He gets wins on all surfaces because of this weird mixture of baseline and net play. I actually enjoy watching him play.

There were as many rallies as net rushing Navarro would let  No one said it was a match to be remembered. Safin did not look bored, he looked like a guy eager to get it done, but uncommonly composed when he would miss his opportunities, quite a few missed BHs, a terrible volley, you name it, he sailed on. What did you expect from this match?

i didn't expect anything - which is why i was surprised about the people in this thread saying marat played well or that he moved better than before and calling this a "good win". both players' game was far from peak form, it was a dull first round, that's all there is to it.

I was at the court for this match. It was pretty funny. Navarro's grunts were ridiculous and Marat looked like he was barely trying. Funny see Navarro rushing the net even though his strike rate was around 33% was pretty funny. Safin is looking good for a 3rd clash with Fedmug.

Let Safin turn back the clock to remind everyone who's boss. Hope he does well this year to stem any thoughts of retiring.

Nothing much to be impressed about, but he is in the next round after all.
