What a win for Tomic. He played excellently, much, much better than the previous times I've seen him play.

Kid's got game, that's for sure, now he's just gotta fix his attitude.

his movement and 2nd serve both look pretty bad but that's expected at that age.

Fourth 4-setter with three winning tie-breaks by one player in Australian Open history (T.Martin, Mirnyi, Safin, Tomic) :yeah: Tomic is 10-1 in tie-breaks (all levels), good prospect to be No. 1 at some point in the next decade, maybe it will be a consolation for Starace

:rocker2:

That was an intense match. Sure he beat a complete mug  But to get a solid, fairly convincing win in only your 2nd ATP Tour MD match? Apart from a bad lapse in the 2nd set and slow starts in the 3rd and 4th, Tomic played really well with IMO the presence and court brain of a much more experienced player :) His DTL backhands were lethal for much of the match.

As for Starace, he must be the worst World No.73 ever :rolls: And to think he ever made the top 30... he must really be itching to get back to the Euro clay

Well done Tomic, great win over Starace. Tomic has a great backhand down the line and definitly got alot of winners on that. Starace showed signs of tiredness in that 4th set, Great win overall!

A first round win on a grand slam court is an impressive accomplishment considering his age and ranking, regardless of the opponent.

So, I'm half listening to the commentators talking about Tomic and Darren says how he's never even been to the semis of a future, etc, etc. And, I'm thinking, then why the hell are you all talking about him. Then, finally, I caught that the kid is just 16! Holy hell! 16? I knew he was young but I didn't know how young. I only saw a couple of points but what I saw was impressive. This kid gets some conditioning and muscle on him and watch out.

Hilariously awesome win for Tomic even if he quite annoying. The extreme muggery of Starace in this match was totally unacceptable. I know he's not great on hard courts but this was just pathetic. I kept waiting for him to start actually playing but it just never happened.

This Tomic is good though. Big time winners under pressure. Good for him!

why,marat,why?

Quite the stroke production on the forehand, Bernard. Good win regardless.

You're right he does get pretty effortless power. It is just a bit too snappy and wristy of a shot for me. Not a ton of racquet speed and not very fluid.

So this guy's really 16? Seems like he's been in the news for ages.

Like Donald Young, he's got that punchability thing going for him. Unlike Young, who has an interesting game, Tomic is raw and definitely talented, yet ultimatery just another ballbasher. Sometimes he seems to miss even the tennis fundamentals, as shown by the repetitive inability to decide whether to rush the net or stay behind and then electing to miss both oppourtunities by standing a metre inside the baseline on no man's land. On the other hand, he's got a lot of effortless potential on both wings and that was shown in the winners column today.

Fortunately for him, Starace was shoddy, missing a plenty of rally forehands throughout the match.

CooCooCachoo
01-19-2009, 08:50 AM
Wow. Just wow. Both him and Klein stepping it up at the right moment, after their earlier matches in the season on the same surface offered no indication they'd even be able to win a set.

Starace and hard courts, like a cow on ice, how someone just can't adapt to faster courts is just unreal; I had the honour to see him play indoors, amazing scenes, what a goat of a player....

Nice job Tomic...

Hewitt should get Tomic to teach him how to hit a backhand down the line.

:haha: Very true

I didn't think Tomic would be able to win a best of 5 set match like hat. i know Starace is a mug but not that much of a mug, should of been able to grind out but to Bernie's credit, he fought hard, espically to come back in that fourth set.

Love that bachand up the line, his forehand is quite a ncie shot as well. Seems very gangly though and with time that should improve and hopefully his serve. Great moment being MCA when he won.

No doubt he'll be hyped up and put on RLA wedensday night, hope he enjoyes it.

Incredible, he just cannot play his tennis anywhere else except clay.

It really is hillarious. I didn't watch him play indoors yet...and I'm not even interested. :tape:
I wonder what is his indoor and grass record?

Tomic now plays exhausted Muller, he could even make 3rd round here.

i dont get it that some players here are burning starace down. ok he isnt great on hardcourts. but he won a set against nadal in bejing. and now a 16 (!!!!!!!) year old player is winning against him. so in stead of whining about how bad potito was, maybe we should all credit this young boy for a very very very outstanding performence! i wish him the best and hope he will have a good career. 16 years and winning a gs md match against a top 100 player wow!!!

He could have put up a scary face. After all, he was playing against just a kid who is probably still afraid of monsters.

i don't understand why everyone (the media in particular) is hyping this win up

as enthralled as i am that he is into the second round, he did nothing to claw his way back into the fourth set, starace just looked tired and irritable and began losing interest in the match and victory completely with the crowd as raucous as they were albeit with good reason he was acting like a complete dick out there

muller will p. take him out in the next round provided he is not completely exhausted ?_? either way if anything this was an expected win... don't hype it up if by the hype tomic has already received he really should have been clear favourite

anyway good luck to bernard :)

yeah... a massive congrats indeed... dude has got a bit of the x factor, cos he still seems to lack a lot, yet, pulled out something at the right moments...

the tomic camp still have a long way to go to prove to those who have been watching his results/actions over the last half year... a professional match is just that - a pro match... i dont care whether its at futures level or challenger or whatever... its a pro match, treat all conditions the same... good win in a first round, yet i'd love to see his old man pull his kid off the court in front of the eyes of the world...
