For the first time I've seen a tie-break 11-9, won without saving setpoint.

The second set was great, especially TB.
Jakke had BP at 1:1 in the third.
What a roller coaster match.
Great start of the year for both- but Dave still has to work to get the shape .

Tight match, but not of great quality IMO :p.

The first set and a half David was great and Jarkko played like he usually plays against the top... He looked lost, didn't know what to do on the court. He probably wasn't sure of his gameplan. Then he usually starts slugging it out with the top, but that won't work either since that isn't his game. He goes for wild winners, makes UEs, gets depressed and down on himself and loses. During this match he said stuff in Finnish like "I'm playing like sh1t!" etc.

But then he saves BPs at 2*-4, throws in a good service game to hold for 4-5, and Nalby gets tight, Jarkko breaks and suddenly it's a whole different ballgame. Jarkko is playing his game, mixing it up and David's game is falling apart.

Jarkko had I think 3 SPs at 6-5* Nalby serving, many in the tiebreak which was tight but not of great quality :D. Great for Jarkko to win the TB, but then Nalby put his foot on the gas and started playing a bit better, Jarkko choked a few points and it was over.

All in all I'm very happy for Jarkko that he was able to make this a match and he can take a lot of positives here. Hope they're both fully fit for AO.

Nalbandian started out really smooth, dominating Nieminen with angles and crushed returns, all the way up til he was serving for it in the 2nd. In the tiebreak holding your serve was like a minibreak, as the first eight points were all won by the receiver. Jarkko took it on his third or fourth setpoint. In the decider there were three consecutive breaks of serve up until Dave underlined his break. Jarkko looked slightly impaired with his leg or knee or something. Both players were erratic with their shots, but Dave coped better and broke yet again, finishing with a smash. Nieminen's dreadful record in finals continues.

True. Some really nice running forehands, for example. I hope he can build on his performance this week, and he might just be able to set up another meeting with Djokovic in Melbourne. :)

Good match despite there being a lot of unforced errors.

Nalbandian was playing fantastic until serving for the second set where his level went down dramatically. Nieminen was steady throughout but run out of gas towards the end. His Isner-like second serve was getting the job done of course.

Too bad Nieminen has a bad record in finals but this was still a great week for him and he mitigates the loss of the Adelaide points.

dave's forehand went a bit haywire in the second set when trying to close out the match... just got tight... really impressed with jarkko's resolve, he just wouldn't cave in... though, he was throwing in some wta-ish 1st serves at tight moments... nice popcorn match for the crowd... i am sure dave will also enjoy some popcorn later as well...

Jarkko does have a bad record in finals, but if you look at the opponents, there aren't many that he should've won. Llodra and Schalken maybe, but then there are lost finals against Federer (x2), Nalbandian (x2), Blake and Gaudio (on clay).

Against Schalken had *3:0 (40-15) in the fifth so he should have won it but on the other hand it was his just second ATP tournament and participation in the final was a huge surprise then. Definitely losing the final to Llodra is a wasted opportunity.

The way you phrased yourself here it took me a while to realise his final against Blake wasn't played on clay.

Yeah I didn't watch tennis back when Niemo made his first final, but I've heard and read about the final. Shame for him to lose it, one wonders how that loss affected his career. What if he'd won it? Only second ATP tournament etc... who knows ;)

Why easy when you can do it in a hard way? Anyway, it is a 10th title for Nalbandian and there were moments when he was in a serious danger to lose in a third final in a row (Basel, Paris).

Nalbandian played some solid tennis till he was serving for the match, then he got a bit tight with his forehand. Jarrko did well, played some nice on the run shots.

good to see david play well so early in an normal tournament. hopefully david will perform well in the GS this year like he did before last year. In my opion he belong in the top 5 en should be real competetive against roger, rafa, nole and andy

Funny when he hits a 210km/h first serve and then the second serve is like 115km/h :retard:

Solid win by Nalbandian - a bit jittery at the start of the 1st and 3rd sets and extremely tight for the end of the 2nd set, but otherwise he was quite consistent both mentally and with his game.

As for Nieminen, I gained a lot of respect for him from his performance :hatoff: Sure he lost, and sure he doesn't really have the skills and consistency in his game to challenge the top players... but he's a fighter - he didn't give in and he pretty much threw verything he could at Nalbandian. IMO used his DTL forehand quite effectively. Mentally, his state of mind seemed to be swinging wildly especially in the last games and TB of the 2nd set (and mine too )

Great atmosphere, great match, what more can I say? :)
