Crazy WTA-like scoreline.

Congrats to Florian though, who, after the German Championships and the final in Nouméa seems to be set for a return to the Top 100 in 2009 :yeah:

Quite amazing that Delic didn't break Mayer's WTA serve once, and I don't recall him having a break point either.

I'd be crying the whole way back to America if I were Delic, embarrassing result against a truly awful opponent.

Crazy WTA-like scoreline.

Tokyo Indoor 1992, Chang def. Stark 6-0 6-7(5) 6-0, I think the last time when that scoreline happened in ATP

No worries, I'm sure he'll rock the Carson Challenger.

Amer :( the scary thing is that the first two games he was broken in the match, he was serving 100% :tape:

At least he went Down Under and tried, which is a lot more than can be said about some of his younger compatriots :o

He should still get a LL spot.

Deboogle!.
01-17-2009, 05:06 AM
Yeah, he was the 2nd highest seed to lose (I looked very quickly, could be wrong), but don't they assign LL spots more randomly now?

TMJordan
01-17-2009, 05:08 AM
Thats what I thought but someone found on the site that they changed the rules and now the highest seeds get in. So Ventura is number one and then Amer, shouldn't have much trouble. I was expecting some other tanking beacause of the changed rule.

^^ I know that was the case for RG, but I don't know if it's true for all the slams.

Deboogle!.
01-17-2009, 05:14 AM
What they did was take the four highest-ranked losers in the third round of qualifying and randomly determine who'd be the LL(s), I believe it was all the slams, not just RG (but again I could be way wrong  )..... I didn't hear about any changes, but I guess I haven't paid much attention either

Qualifiers and lucky losers
Qualifiers:
The Australian Open 2009 qualifying event is held at Melbourne Park from
January 14–17. The 16 men and 12 women who win three consecutive qualifying matches qualify for the main draw.
Lucky losers:
If a main draw player is unable to play in the first round, the highest-ranked losing player in the third round of qualifying becomes a ‘lucky loser’ and fills the vacancy in the main draw.

Quite amazing that Delic didn't break Mayer's WTA serve once, and I don't recall him having a break point either. Mayer doesn't have a WTA serve. His serve looks weird, like his whole game, but it's not that bad at all.

Great job of the Germans in the qualies with 5 qualifiers.

I would hardly call the official site a reliable source, but in this case it seems to be true.

This is ridiculous. At the US Open last year, some random unseeded losers got in instead of Petzschner.

Don't think that still holds true. There's a random draw for the four highest-ranked losers in Q3.

Edit: OK, so didn't see the LLs. Guess it still holds true

Why for the 4 highest ranked? That was the case long ago, but not in the last few GSs.

Isn't it the four highest seeded (not ranked, though in qualies it amounts to the same thing)?

Yeah, same at Wimbledon. All 16 players had to stay in London if they wanted to have chance to have a LL spot that was drawn randomly from the 16 QR3 losers. This caused a few problems because the players were tied up in the following week and could not commit to a scheduled tournament if they wanted to keep a chance for the LL.

I don't know if the complete order of all 16 losers was done right after the last qualifying round. If so, they knew about their chances at least.

The Slams all have to do the same thing within a calendar year, they are governed by the ITF rulebook. So, what does this year's rulebook say and what did last year's rulebook say? Where is smucav when we need her?

In 2005, the lucky losers were chosen by rank. In 2006, it was a random draw of the top 4 losers, then a random draw of the next four losers if they needed more players. Not sure what 2007 and 2008 were, I never really paid attention.

It's definitely still random...

from http://amerdelic.com/

After the match I was in the Anti-Doping room for post match testing, when I found there was a possible Lucky Loser spot. I never like to get my hopes up for anything, especially for something like this, when I have never ever gotten one in the past. I mean, your name gets pulled out of a hat. Nothing good really happens that way.

Few hours passed before they actually went through the process. I was already on my way to dinner when I found out that my name was pulled and I was back in the draw!!! I though they were joking... thankfully, they were not.

pretty strange though that the 2LLs were the 2 highest ranked players who lost in qualies
