Sydney SF: Nieminen def. Djokovic 6-4 7-6 (3)

Novak just couldn't break Nienimen's rhythm. Jarkko kept the ball in play nicely and certainly frustrated Novak. Pretty wild shots at the end of long rallies. The wind didn't help, either.

Awful from Djokovic, just awful. Error after error. Shame, I wanted to see a new number 2.

Niemenen played really well, but Djokovic needs to get his act together.

Jarkko played an excellent match and handle the wind much better than Djokovic.

Way too many UEs from Djokovic and seems the pressure of #2 got him again.

Congratulation Jarkko and win it all in Sydney!

An potential AO third-round rematch could be in the works, and if Jarkko can play to similar form, it's an interesting possibility :)

Great match from Jarkko! Nole was getting frustrated with the wind and was unable to put the ball out of play against the quick Jarkko. Jarkko saved break points with courageous play, and totally deserved this victory.

This win is Jarkko's biggest so far in his career... Hopefully this gives him even more confidence for the 2009 season and he will be able to put the disappointing, illness-full 2008 season behind him.

Tough match for me though, two of my faves and I would've liked to see Nole as n.2 and gain in confidence to defend the AO title... Though I feel that Nole may not have wanted to go that deep here since he likes to rest the week before a Slam.

Sure, this was definitely good for his match toughness.

Still, I hate these kinds of matches :D. Don't know who to cheer for. The biggest thing I enjoy when Djokovic wins is when it throws MTF into a total riot and some posters into a hating frenzy. That's entertainment at its finest :D :p

Djokovic can forget about the no.2 ranking for the rest of the year then

Lopez
01-16-2009, 09:37 AM
Some comments from Jarkko from the Helsingin Sanomat website (my translation to English):

On the match:
"It's fantastic for me that I win the world number three, in straight sets even. I was able to execute my tactics and gameplan. I put pressure on Djokovic's forehand. The wind was circling around the stadium, which made the conditions a bit difficult for the both of us. I tried to serve at his body and the spin caught him off guard a couple of times."

On facing Nalbandian:
"I feel that Nalbandian is a top-5 player when he plays his best, that is if he's motivated and well prepared. He's been playing very well here."

On his form:
"Many pieces have just come together. Most importantly, I'm healthy now. I kept saying last year, that some part of the bad form was due to illnesses. I've never felt this good about my physical condition and body than now."

On facing Mathieu in AO R1:
"A seeded player in the first round. Of course I'd rather play someone unseeded, but on the other hand I could have gotten someone way worse than him".

Hopefully Jarkko wins the final, he really needs the points since I don't see him going to the QF of the AO this year. Who knows though, maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Happy that Nieminen has started off the year well. Well done to him :yeah:

As for Djokovic, I don't think he's that gutted over the loss. It gives him more time to conserve energy for AO. Don't ever underestimate him, nor think that the change in racquet will hamper him. He’ll find a way to sprint, climb and walk through the AO rounds, but next thing you know he'll be in the semi-finals facing Federer once again.

there comes a time in most players career when we can say they have hit the ceiling and can go no further in the rankings... i feel we are now at that point with djokovic...

I assume this is a joke, the guy's 21 years old!

Very surprising loss for me as he played very well against Ancic the other night. His forehand was very good that match. I didn't see this match, but I don't hear many people saying that he didn't give his best, so that's a bit worrying. But on the other hand, he had a big chance to take the 1st set with 15-40 on 4-3, and I also hear no one about that...
And last year, Djoko didn't play a single match before going into Melbourne, and played an awful TMC before that, and he won it, so one cannot say much about this preparation I presume.

Indeed, and looking at JolanGago's avatar, he thinks Murray will past him. Then he first has to get a result on clay, and I don't see that happening this year.

And what is irrelevant? Irrelevant for number 1 spot? True, but Murray is even less irrelevant in that prospect.

Ad Wim

He has done something though. He is a very good hardcourt player, maybe the best at the moment, but winning a slam is another thing than winning a TMS.
And even if he does win it, he's nothing on clay, and still fysically a bit wobbelish, so I don't think he'll be a factor for number 1 soon.

mate, i quoted your post because i think you are neither flamer nor a hater, or basher of Fakey's.

but i don't agree about novak on this, he is, and will continue to oscillate, because he isn't mentally strong as he thinks/or would like himself to be, also cockiness is a dagger with two sides, and, unless your Fed, it's a very dangerous thing to posses, and deal with it's repercussions.
all this said, he will win more slams, and i firmly believe this, his game is of that quality, and offcourse, having a great game is not the most important factor in winning major or excelling, but again, i have no fear that he'll remain a 1 slam wonder.

Will he be a GOAT as Nadull and Fed? That's something i very much doubt.
Watch him through his whole carrier struggle with consistency and irritate the fuck out of his fans.

when it comes to Nole i have the impression that tennis makes him puke :)
it seems to be that he prefers true hedonism to masochistic repetitive sport called tennis and he's on stand by ;)
When Djoker wins than he is the best player in the world- when he loses he just is a hedonist.
Grow up Roxy :)

Nole got an ass whuping,Jarko was on fire and as usual the classless serbian fans were silenced and the other Aussies were gleefully supporting jarko.

Unexpected result for me - thought it was pretty much a foregone conclusion when I ended my tennis viewing for the night after the first SF that it would be a Djoko-Nalby final, but I clearly underestimated the Finn. Well done to Nieminen, he'll be the underdog again next time around and I don't fancy his chances if FitDave keeps playing like he is, but I'll be rooting for him :yeah:

Greatest moonballer of all time?

I agree. He's definitely not the GOAT.

Terrible result prior to AO Djoker should stick to comedy if he thinks this form can win him AO.

Will new rankings be released on Monday? If not then Nole only had a virtual chance of being #2 as he would have had more pts than Fed going into AO. Monday after AO would reveal true rankings.
