He's playing great! Offense and defense. Even some touch with a nice volley and backhand slice that I saw.

It should have been an even more comfortable win, because Juan Martin was screwed on a call on break point for a second break in the 2nd. Soderling's ball was well long, I thought.

Why didn't Del Potro tank this? Does he want to upset Nalbandian all over again by not prioritising the big events?

Del Potro still is a big freak. He beats lower rank opponents easily but being in his top form was crashed by Fat Dave twice and once by Federer at the end of last year :shrug:

To be fair- I really don't think he was in top form at Madrid and Paris last year. He was tired and had that toe issue (sounds like I am making excuses but I really don't think he was A= game wise). I still think Nalby would have beaten him- but he was not playing his best.

Have you seen how he crashed Nalbandian and Ancic a day before he lost to Federer and Nalbandian? IMO Federer and Nalbanian are really wise and found a way to humiliate Del Potro who has really one-sided tennis but I have to admit well rounded.

Not to forget that Del Potro also beat Nalbandian before losing twice to him.

I'd tend to say it's fatigue that cost him the end of the year matches, but then again, we're only going to know once this year is over how well he can deal with both the pressure of big events and the sustained effort.

I see your point- but I still don't think he was playing in top form at those tournaments. Ymmv. But yes- they did not let him get any sort of rhythm. To start to try to make inroads on the top players- he needs to come in more when he has the opportunity. And drop shots will always be a danger- as Nalby was quick to exploit. Delpo does have some big limits on his game right now (movement forward and back, tendency to stay back for too long, a weak second serve, etc.) but I think he is capable of building on it. If not- I will be disappointed.

Unfortunately I didn't see his match against Murray, the scoreline indicates it was a good match by Del Potro, maybe even one of his bests, but the matches against Federer, Nalbanian, Djokovic and Davydenko in autumn last year, showed holes in Del Potro's tennis.

Yes, but Novak doesn't play with a lot of variety on the speed or weight of his shots, and uses the slice less than the others, I think. Still he plays great angles and thats not good for Juan Martín.
