ATP Graphics Makers Tour

Australian Open '09

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3523/ausopen09copytt1.jpg

Welcome everyone, to the first MTF ATP Graphics Makers Tour Tournament - the Australian Open '09.

To commit, simply write "DESIGNER - IN" or "JUDGE -IN" in this thread.

Deadline for signup is Sunday, January 18th 11AM Melbourne time. (= CET 1AM, = EST Saturday 7PM)

Due to this thread being out a week later then predicted by the rules - THERE IS NO QUALIFICATION ROUND.
Everyone starts play on Monday.

To review rules, go to the Rules Thread (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994447&postcount=1).

***------------------News and AnnouncementS------------------***

All the news will be announced here, so you don't have to search the thread - everything important (deadlines, announcements, reminders) will be posted here, in the first post.
Here are the most important News and Announcements for this GMT Tournament, sorted chronologically starting from latest:

Wednesday, 14.01.
- Send Task Pool Tasks: You can start sending in Tasks for The Task Pool. Everyone please send 3 Tasks (not one as predicted by the rules) by PM to Harmless, until start of play.

Monday, 12.01.
- Designers Commitment Deadline: Entry List Deadline for Designers is, for this tournament ONLY, until one day before AO Main Draw start of play.

- Judges Commitment Deadline: Judges will be accepted to the Judges Entry List all the way until the GMT Quarter Finals.

- Qualifications Round: For this Tournament ONLY, due to the thread being out a week later then normal schedule predicts, THERE IS NO QUALIFICATIONS ROUND.

- 1st Round Byes: The GMT Main Draw size will be out when we see how many Designers we'll have playing. Due to there being no Qualifications Round and, thus, no Seeding - if the Draw allows for 1st Round Byes for Designers, they will be given out in the order of application in this thread.

- Manager Wanted: The current Managers for this Tournament are Poiree and Harmless, and we are searching for a third Manager. Since GMT gameplay requires graphics to be posted every 8 hours, and we are both in the same timezone (Central European), we would need someone with at least 5 hours difference, so anyone from either North or South America, Australia or Eastern Asia would be great. Please PM Harmless if you're interested. :)

- Photo Wanted: Also, please, if anyone has a larger version of the court photo above, or knows where to find it, PM Harmless. The graphic above is a bit too messy, mostly due to the very small size of the photo available. :o

Hey everyone and great to see you here. :wavey:

We don't seam to be high in numbers right now, unfortunately, but, hey, at least noone has to worry about not making it to 2nd week.

Clearly this way everyone gets to play quarters. :D

If this is around our final number, I have two formats suggested for you, please think about it and let me know which one you'd prefer to play:

1. Wimbledon Final

A very, very long match :D - from the beginning of Main Draw play till the Quarters you will play against the Designer you were drawn with. That's a match 7 (or 8:scratch:) days long. You will create new graphics according to the tasks every day, and in the end, the average scores of each set make up the final score. (final 1st set score = 1st set score of day 1 + 1st set score of day 2 + 1st set score of day 3 etc.)
All these 7 or 8 days you play against the same designer, and it's all treated like one mega match.

2. Mr Disney's Dream - Grand Slam Round Robin :p

We all play eachother, in a Round Robin format, everyone in one group. You play each Designer once and the final number of the matches you win determines whether you go through to the semis or not.

Everyone please decide which format you like better and post it here.

Also, you can now start sending me(by PM) the Tasks for The Task Pool (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994486&postcount=8).
Please remember that you cannot play your own task, so think of things you want to see others do, not what you'd like to do yourself necessarily.

Also due to the size of the draw - SEND IN 3 TASKS, not one.
You have until Monday to think of 3 fun tasks to add to the task pool. :)

And I almost forgot to say :tape:, I'm in as a Designer too, of course.

Hope we have lots of fun with this :wavey:

Can you do an idiots guide? (with pictures, simple words and big fonts?:p)

Sure can.

I was afraid the rules were a bit too "wordy", people interested in the visual arts usually focus on images much more then words, so it's only logical that the rules for this should be more focused on that. I just wanted to get everything out first, worry about walkthroughs later. :D

I've made a quick rundown in a Q&A format, hope it's clearer this way.
It'll be in the next post, I'll link to it from the Rules Thread too.
Anything that I haven't managed to explain properly, just ask! :wavey:

But you'll see that once we start playing, you'll get used to everything very quickly. ;)

<ATP Graphics Makers Tour>

(all IMPORTANT words are in blue)

(all LINKS are in bold and underlined)

(all comments regarding THIS TOURNAMENT ALONE are in italic and orange)

:: What is GMT about? ::

The gameplay of ATP GMT consists of two things:
1. Creating tennis graphics
2. Judging (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994506&postcount=11) those graphics
--------------------

:: Who can play? ::

Designer - anyone with a graphic editing program. (such as Photoshop)
Judge (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994501&postcount=10) - anyone.
--------------------

:: How do you commit? ::

Simply write "DESIGNER - IN" or "JUDGE - IN" in the GMT Tournament Commitments Thread (in the Games subforum).
(each Tournament has three threads: 1. Commitments, 2. Qualifications and 3. Play)
(GMT AO '09 doesn't have a Qualifications thread)
--------------------

:: What's the first thing you do when entries are closed? ::

The first thing you can do (it's optional) is to think of a Task (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994480&postcount=7) to send for The Task Pool (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994486&postcount=8).
The Task Pool is a collection of player contributed Tasks, one of which is randomly drawn for each GMT Main Draw match.

Both Designers and Judges (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994501&postcount=10) can send in tasks.
Your deadline for sending in Tasks is the start of ATP Main Draw play (usually Monday).

(for this tournament(AO '09), since we're a week late with opening the thread, you send in tasks WHILE commitments are still accepted)
(also, because of the small draw, send in 3 Tasks, not one)
--------------------

:: Are there Quallies? ::

Yes.

But not for this tournament, so I'll do this write-up for the next one.
--------------------

:: What's the format of the matches? ::

Just like in an ATP Tournament. One-on-one, best of three sets matches based on the Draw.
Winner goes through to the next round.

(In the AO, due to our small draw compared to the ATP draw, we're playing a Round Robin format until the semis)
--------------------

:: When does play start? ::

Instead of before, GMT starts AFTER the first ATP match of the first day ends.
Basically, it starts as soon as you can get pics from the first match of the day.
--------------------

:: What's the deadline for sending in graphics? ::

24 hours after GMT play starts.
--------------------

:: How many graphics do you design for each match? ::

3 graphics. One for each set.
--------------------

:: How do I send in my graphics? ::

You should first have an account opened with an Internet website that hosts photos.
Tinypic and Imageshack are recommended.
Photobucket has your username in the link, so avoid that.

After you make your graphics, upload them to the hosting site you're using, and then send the links to them to the Manager by PM, before deadline.
--------------------

:: After I've sent my graphics, how are they judged? ::

They're judged one by one, set by set.

For the 1st set, both yours and your opponent's 1st graphic are posted by the manager on the Play thread.
Then each one is judged for 8 hours.
Everyone who judges a graphic gives out 3 scores for each:

1. Task - how well the task is accomplished / shown
2. Technical - blending, cropping, perspective etc.
3. Overall - your personal subjective score for the graphic
(see details about Judging (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994506&postcount=11))

Everyone posts their scores on the Tournament Play thread.
To determine The Set Score (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994515&postcount=13) of the 1st set, all the scores for each graphic are added together, category by category, and the one with the higher score wins the set.

2nd set - repeat.

If players are tied, 3rd set is played.
--------------------

:: Can I be both a Designer and a Judge? ::

Yes.
Every Designer is automatically entered in the Judges List.
You can vote on every match but your own.
--------------------

:: Which format should I make my graphics in? :: There are 4 formats you can choose from in [GMT]:

1. Avatar - 144 x 168 px
2. Signature - 800 x 260 px
3. Standard - 500 x 350 px
4. Poster - 500 x 500 px

This is only different in the Finals, when both designers make a Wallpaper(800x600)
--------------------

:: Does GMT have a specific format for set tasks? ::

Yes.
Every 1st set task is drawn from THE TASK POOL.
Every 2nd set task is a graphic of A MATCH in the ATP tournament, which the manager designates.

Every 3rd set task is a choice between A MATCH OR A PLAYER currently playing the ATP tournament.
(see details about Tasks (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994480&postcount=7))
--------------------

You can also see the Colour-Coded Schedule of a Tournament here (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=7994470&postcount=5).

Anything else I missed let me know. ;)

For the task pool, do they have to be tennis related? Or just Australia related?

Hey Andreas. :wavey:

All the Tasks need to be tennis related, and specifically, related in some way to the AUSTRALIAN OPEN.
That's the main principle, for the task to be related to the Australian Open. :)
These are some of the categories of things you can put in a Task:1. Any player in the main draw (or final round of the qualification draw) (example: Troicki)
2. Any potential match-up in this year's draw (you can see this when the draw comes out)
3. Any previous winner of the tournament (Đoković, Federer, Safin etc.)
4. Any previous match in the past of the tournament
5. Any event that has happened in the tournament's history (some kind of a scandal maybe, I don't know, I don't know of any )
6. Any infrastructure the tournament contains (courts, stands, grounds etc.) (the Rod Laver stadium, AO grounds etc.)
7. Something in some way typical for the tournament (like strawberries or rain delays for Wimbledon)
:wavey:

Harmless
01-15-2009, 07:16 PM
The judge will vote open? or by PM ??

Ok ;)

Oh, thanks for reminding me, I forgot to put that in.

Everyone always votes by posting on the thread.

There's only one exception:

In Quallies, we don't play matches - all the graphics are posted together and then we rank the best ones highest.
And since you can't vote on your own match, everyone would know which graphic is yours if you posted your scores, because it would be the only one you haven't sent scores for.
So only Designers in Quallies send scores by PM to the manager. Everything else is posted on the Play Thread.

I have one more question for all of you before we get started -

Would you like the Task Pool to be posted in whole, so you know all the tasks that are available, or would you like it to be a surprize that's revealed with each task that's drawn?

A 7 votes majority decides.

Goldmund
01-18-2009, 12:03 PM
well maybe it would be nice to know all the tasks so maybe when i know i won't be around for some days (and don't have my graphics programm anywhere else but my home computer) i could already do the tasks and send them in order to stay in the tournament...on the other side i shouldn't commit if i know i won't be there for some days and it seems more fun to not know the tasks before....so well.....i don't really know...no vote from me
