Safin out of Kooyong Classic

Former world number one Marat Safin has withdrawn from the invitational Kooyong Classic with a shoulder injury.

Safin was replaced in the eight-man field for the Melbourne contest by Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.

World number two Roger Federer, who missed last year's event due to what later transpired to be glandular fever, headlines the field, which also includes his Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka.

The duo combined to win gold in the doubles at last year's Beijing Olympics.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco, Marcos Baghdatis - the 2006 Australian Open finalist - Croatia's Marin Cilic, Chile's Fernando Gonzalez and Spain's Carlos Moya make up the rest of the field.

Play in the tournament, which guarantees each of the entrants three matches, begins on Wednesday.

Oh that really sucks:( I suppose he saw that the weather on Wednesday is gonna be 39 degrees, did the smart thing and pulled out.

Seriously, I hope his shoulder injury will be ok for the Australian Open. It will be nice seeing Ljubicic again anyway, he's a nice guy.

Any precaution is good. I'm afraid the next serious injury will end his career.

Surprised Federer didn't pull out too. Don't think I've ever seen him play that much prior to a Slam.

what a weak field for Kooyong, it used to be pretty strong.

Please, don't even joke about that! I don't think I could handle hearing the whole stadium chanting 'Brian' again
