That was a very entertaining match and dramatic too. I only watched the last two sets because that was what was televised, but Stepanek was completely toying with Verdasco. Dropshots and lobs, slices and good volleying too. It was the best match that he's played this week. Verdasco looked totally confused as to what to do, and was mainly reacting to Stepanek's play.

Stepanek got tight at the end, where his dropshots started sitting up more, but with a double break lead he was able to still finish it off.

I think he went pretty overboard with them, really. Also deliberately slowing things down in Stepanek's last service game. Bit of gamesmanship. I guess we he won't get as much flak as Stepanek though given that he's nice looking. :o

Damn, entertaining match but stinky result. Again Stepanek beats a cute and talented youngster from a set down. :(

I was confused about Nando's huge fist pumps and celebrations in the 3rd set. I saw it as mocking the clownish Stepanek, but whatever he needed to do to get pumped. Perhaps he's taking a page from the successful Nadal - or, even from the girlfriend Ana Ivanovic, another player known for constant self-support during matches.

That was an entertaining match, plenty of gesturing and posing, but the sexy one needed to go a set down, before he got into the groove of the match.

Double break at 4-1 in the 3rd, and Steps was getting a bit nervous and when serving at 4-3, he played a great angled volley to save off the break point.

Good week for Verdasco, but the purple pimp or Lavender Lothario showed his sexiness when it counted.

Wah wah wah, the old what has he won argument, so it's ok, when players you like use delaying and gamesmanship tactics.

So the 50 sec in between points and 100 ball bounces, the injury time outs for a massage not at a change of ends are alright then? Like I said, there are plenty of ways to use gamesmanship, some are just more blatant about it.

Actually I have acknowledged Stepanek's antics many times, it's not like I don't deny their existence. If you want further proof of that, then check the Stepanek and Horna thread from Rome 2008, where tricky Radek took a strategic break at the end of the 2nd set.

Next of all, got to do better than that, when I happened to be a Muster fan and he was one of the biggest all time pricks on court and would do anything and everything to a win a match, yes like ripping a banana out of an opponents hand at a change of ends. Does this mean I appreciate the antics? No, it doesn't, but this does not mean that I deny their existence or approve of them. It is possible to dislike certain aspects of players and like others.

Schu

Seems Stepanek has found the winning formula... get beaten pretty routinely the first set, have some "magic" cream rubbed on your back early in the second set and immediately after bounce back onto the court, then start with the yells, and a few strategically place grunts/yells when your opponent is just about to hit the ball, throw in a few "moves" and for good measure add a bump on the changeover.

In American football, a player gets penalized for moves like Steps. I beleive it's called unsportsmanlike conduct...

Too bad he has to resort to antics to win. His game is clever and he has quite a variety of shots that he knows when to use.

I'm so fucking frustrated at this result. :(

This would have been the perfect start for Nando, it was an early chance to consolidate the Davis Cup win and really have him feeling confident heading into the Australian Open but now, yet again, a final has slipped out his grasp and it will probably have a lingering effect on him. So much potential, so few results. His friend, the crazy one, looked ready to jump on court and kick the shit out of Radek but yeah, it was an entertaining third set.

Congrats to Stepanek, I look forward to seeing those antics up close in Sydney so I can laugh at more than a television screen.

Um...a "tennis-lover's" player? I guarantee if you took a poll of players, officials, MTF posters, and general fans, he would garner about 5 to 10 percent support. The man is an embarrassment to the sport...and, as revealed by his pedigree, has three measly titles...Let's see, acting like a monkey on crack, wearing outfits take from his grandmother's 50-year old curtains, and using any and all cheating tactics (outside of shooting spitballs at the opponent...someone get him on the phone: I may want to use that)...all for THREE TINY, INSIGNIFICANT titles.

Again, for me, if you wanted to have a snapshot of his career, it was last year at Wimbledon where the loser, in a display of acting never before seen on a tennis court, started rolling around in the grass at Wimbledon..."writhing" in "pain"...finally getting up with blades of grass stuck to his hair...

:haha:

Whereas I do?
Exactly. On the other hand, I'm yet to see a post of l_mac acknowledging Nadal's antics.

there's a difference between calling a timeout and getting a quick kidney massage at a change of ends. Stepanek didn't call a time out in either the semi or the final. Could well have been a bit of gamesmanship regardless but you're factually incorrect

First of all, congrats to Radek....

I am far from being a true Radek fan, and sometimes he can be annoying I agree, but other players do the same, Rafa and Nole with ball bouncing or arse picking or MO, Kiefer touching the outside line before every return, Jankovic MO, and in the past guys like McCenroe, Connors, Becker or Muster, same thing and even much worse then Radek; not to mention the guys from the challenger circuit; we are here talking about tennis, it is no ballet, chess or swimming, tennis is and will always be a mind game, and players like Gasquet or Verdasco must grow a pair of balls, and stop being mental midgets, Richard is a mammas boy, and Nando has just no brain, both proved this in many occasions on the court, they are both big talents, while Nando did rise to what was expected from him, Gasquet never got(still can though) as far as he should have; just ask Roddick or any other player who usually demolishes Radek why they have no problem with his antics, thats because they do not give a shit; some people can get over it in a match, some can't; but saying Radek only won because of his antics is rubbish, he has great touch and feel for the game, he isn't a god given talent(like Gasquet,Nalbandian,Malisse or Roger, just random named) and he knows that, so kudos to him for maximazing all his powers...

And of course, off the court he is a legend, womanizer a la bon heur... (for that he is a true champ)...

Both players played great tennis and their match was greatly entertaining.

Stepanek is a great tennis talent, he's a little bit old but he really brings something to this sport, I believe.

He only won this match by his game, which was really astonishing, including his baseline game, but of course especially his imagination and tactics which are great.

Verdasco, who's younger, looks very promising for this year :

he is clearly utterly motivated and plays great,

the way he played against Mathieu and in the final was very impressive.

That's mainly what I remember.

I really hope Verdasco will not be too disappointed, since the way he played was really great.

Of course, with some fluke draws even Monfils made a GS SF.

Like you said, if Stepanek is that old, maybe he has a recurrent injury to take recurrent timeouts. :)

As if mr. top 10 Stepanek (something which Verdasco may never achieve anyway) would need timeouts to beat Horna.
