Starting the year with their 50th title:worship:
================================================== ====
Bryans Win 50th ATP World Tour Title

Four-time ATP World Tour champions Bob and Mike Bryan defeated top rivals Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 6-1, 7-6(3) on Saturday to capture their 50th career ATP World Tour title at the Medibank International – an ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Sydney.

The American duo becomes only the fourth team in the Open Era to win at least 50 titles, joining Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde (61), Peter Fleming and John McEnroe (57), and Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan (57). They have a 50-33 record in ATP World Tour finals.

The Americans were unbroken in the 62-minute match and converted two of seven break points on their opponents’ serve in front of a big crowd on the Ken Rosewall Arena. In the semi-finals they knocked out No. 3 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles.

The 30 year olds played out an intense rivalry with Nestor and Zimonjic on the ATP World Tour season that culminated in a loss for the Americans in a winner-take-all Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai final in November, awarding Nestor-Zimonjic the title and the year-end No. 1 ATP Doubles Team Ranking.

“When we lost that match last year, it really gave us extra motivation to work hard in the off-season,” said Mike Bryan. “We came here pretty excited, and we played every match this week with a lot of energy. We worked on a few things and it paid off today. We're really happy and excited. It's a great preparation for the Aussie Open.”

“It definitely feels good to always avenge any loss,” added Bob. "But this is a really tough team, and we're looking forward to many finals in the future. They're going to be tough on any surface. We all know each other so well that just little tweaks are going to make the difference every time.”

It marks the first title in Sydney for the Bryans, who have twice before finished runner-up - in 2004 (l. to Bjorkman-Woodbridge) and last season (l. to Gasquet-Tsonga). They improved to a 14-6 event record.

“Ten years playing down here and to get it (the title) when we're 30 years old, it feels good,” said Mike. "When we're dead and gone we'll be up on that board and be remembered with some of the greats. It's good to be on the Sydney champions' board with some of our idols: Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.”

Individually, both 36-year-old Nestor and 32-year-old Zimonjic also have strong records in Sydney. Canadian Nestor was making his fifth career finals appearance with as many partners (2-2), having captured titles in 1999 (w/Lareau) and 2001 (w/Stolle). He also was runner-up in 1998 (w/Eltingh) and 2007 (w/Knowles). Serbian Zimonjic won the title in 2006 with Fabrice Santoro.

Last season, the top two teams captured five titles each – the best on the ATP World Tour. Nestor and Zimonjic compiled a 5-3 mark in finals, while the Bryan twins went 5-7 in title matches.

It is the second final loss in as many weeks for Nestor and Zimonjic, who finished runner-up to Spaniards Marc Lopez and Rafael Nadal at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha last week.

Mike Bryan
Bob Bryan

SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES

BRYAN-BRYAN/Nestor-Zimonjic
6-1, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Can you just talk about the start that you had in the match today. It was quite impressive.
MIKE BRYAN: Yeah, it felt good to be the underdogs for once. When we lost that match last year, it really gave us extra motivation to work hard in the off-season. We came here pretty excited, and we played every match this week with a lot of energy.
We worked on a few things and it paid off today. We're really happy and excited. It's a great preparation for the Aussie Open.

Q. Does it feel good to avenge the loss?
BOB BRYAN: Yeah, it definitely feels good to always avenge any loss. But this is a really tough team, and we're looking forward to many final in the future.
They're going to be tough on any surface. And, yeah, you know, little changes here and there are going to make a difference. We all know each other so, well just little tweaks are going to make the difference every time.

Q. Finally collecting your first Sydney title. Must be a bit satisfying.
MIKE BRYAN: Yeah, ten years playing down here and, you know, to get it when we're 30 years old, it feels good. When we're dead and gone we'll be up on that board and be remembered with some of the greats.
Yeah, I mean, it's good to be on the Sydney champions's board with some of our idols: Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.
There's one more to go, that's Indian Wells. So that's the title that eludes us, and we'll see.

Q. What's it like playing in front of such a big crowd in Sydney?
BOB BRYAN: I think it just brings out the best in both teams. You know, it makes you more focused. The energy -- it makes every point more important.
We're all big match players, and a crowd like that brings us alive.
MIKE BRYAN: That's it.
BOB BRYAN: You know, it gets you ready for a big slam next week as well, because there's going to be big crowds over there.
So it's nice to come down here in the first week of the year and have such a packed house.

Kubot/Marach took out Fyrstenberg/Matkowski. Another seed (6) bites the dust. Though, I honestly don't know if it was a better case here... they (K/M) sure are looking dangerous. But I guess we'll cross that bridge when -- if -- it comes.

One match at a time. I hope the guys can pull it out against against Fish/Isner.

Since they are playing on Rod Laver Arena does anyone think ESPN will show the match?

tsurupettan
01-27-2009, 01:25 PM
I hope so -- looking at the schedule of play, I don't really think they'll have much competition for air time, either -- if any at all depending on how long Nadal vs. Simon goes.

It's also four [well-]known Americans playing -- if this match doesn't get aired, then that's just stupid beyond all belief, and I'd be really baffled.

zookeeper
01-27-2009, 01:48 PM
I'm hoping the 4 American's will help them to show the match. Plus like tsurupettan said it doesn't look like there will be any other matches going on that would be competition for tv time. I guess I'll be hoping for a quick 3 set match between Nadal & Simon.

Bryan brothers of US win Aussie doubles title

By NEIL FRANKLAND, AP Sports Writer 58 minutes ago

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—American twins Bob and Mike Bryan claimed their seventh Grand Slam title with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 win Saturday over Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles in the Australian Open doubles final.

The brothers, who regained their No. 1 ranking by reaching the final, were the second set of American siblings to claim Grand Slam titles after Venus and Serena Williams won the women’s doubles.

“It’s fun to see the hard work pay off, but it’s still a long year, we’ve got to keep it going for 52 weeks,” Mike Bryan said.

The Bryans, who previously won here in 2006 and 2007, have been ranked No. 1 in the world four out of the past five years. They lost their top ranking to Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor in the last match of the season-ending Shanghai Masters last November.

Third-seeded Bhupathi and Knowles made a strong start, dominating at the net to break the second-seeded Bryans in the second and fifth games en route to winning the first set.

The momentum changed in the second set when the Bryans held off three break points in the seventh game, and squandered one of their own in the eighth, before breaking to even the match.

The brothers maintained the pressure, breaking in the second, fourth and sixth games to take the title.

“Mahesh and I played very well, we just weren’t able to close there at the end,” Knowles said. “But they’re worthy champions and we enjoy competing against those guys.”

India’s Bhupathi and Knowles of the Bahamas were playing for their first Grand Slam title since beginning their partnership at the start of last year.

The final was a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal, when Bhupathi and Knowles dealt the Bryans their first loss at Melbourne Park in three years. The Bryans won all four of their subsequent meetings, including earlier this month at the Sydney International semifinals.

Bhupathi has previously won four Grand Slams doubles titles with longtime partner Leander Paes and Max Mirnyi, while Knowles came to Melbourne with three titles, all with Daniel Nestor.

Bhupathi has another chance at a title in Melbourne when he joins fellow Indian Sania Mirza against Czech pair Iveta Benesova and Lukas Dlouhy in the mixed doubles final Sunday.

The 30-year-old Bryans have contested the Australian Open final five out of the past six years:eek:, and are only the fourth doubles team in the Open Era to win 50 ATP titles or more. The Australian title was their 51st.

Q. Why are you building a gym at home?

BOB BRYAN: Rehab for my shoulder.

MIKE BRYAN: Yeah. We had an extra garage. We had the music room in the other garage. Every time we went across the street to the club, we got hassled by members. We'd always sit in there and talk to the members.

BOB BRYAN: Not hassled.

MIKE BRYAN: Just talked. Didn't get as much work as we wanted done.

Q. When did you build it?

BOB BRYAN: The day after Shanghai.

MIKE BRYAN: I did most of it.

BOB BRYAN: You cleaned.

MIKE BRYAN: I cleaned out the garage, dusted it all, put down the carpet and mirror, got the equipment. Yeah, we spend a couple hours every day in there. Don't have a heater. It's pretty freezing in there.

Q. There was a time a year ago or so that people started to doubt you could win slams routinely.

BOB BRYAN: It's not routine. It's never routine. Like I said before the final to Mike, let's go play like it's our last slam final. You never know when you're going to be in another one.

We really cherish each one. There's so many good teams out there. You have to stay healthy. Like we saw last year, I didn't even know if I was going to have my serve back. :awww:

We're really excited to be healthy and be on top again. I think we'll take over the No. 1 ranking again, which is where we feel the best. We feel at home at No. 1. It's a little bit different to being in the off‑season as the No. 2 team. It made us want to work harder.

Seven weeks off really refreshed us mentally. I felt like we came into last season a little irritable. Long Davis Cup match, a lot of stress and pressure. Didn't get much time off. Had like five days off after the exhibition season. We came in here kind of baked. The whole season was like swimming uphill.

This year we feel like we have a clean slate. We're healthy mentally is the big thing.

Q. You've been so committed to Davis Cup, but it does take its toll.

BOB BRYAN: The final was awesome, the best moment we've ever had in tennis. But definitely stressful. I mean, we go out there, we don't get much sleep for the whole week leading up. You're out there training. Keep training hard. We didn't go to Shanghai. But we kept training, training, training, all the way to early December. Right after that, just straight to exhibitions.

This year we just put the racquets down for a month. We didn't pick up a racquet for a month. Just worked out in the gym. Only did two exhibitions. Didn't go to Hawaii like we usually do. Just stayed at home. Didn't get off the couch. Watched movies all day and left on January 8th. We built the gym at the house so we didn't have to leave. We just got in a routine, just cleared the mind, feel refreshed for the first time in a long time.

Q. Is your shoulder a hundred percent?

BOB BRYAN: Yeah. I mean, it's pretty close to a hundred percent. It still feels a little weird.

MIKE BRYAN: Feels a lot better.

BOB BRYAN: Yeah, it feels a ton better. That tear is healed. I'm still working on it every day to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Q. Looking at tonight's match, after a very poor first set, how did you turn it around?

MIKE BRYAN: We got broken first game of the match. You feel a little frantic. It felt like things were going wrong. They played great tennis to beat us 6‑2 in the first.

It came down to one or two points. Bob hit that kind of a lucky shot where he wasn't looking. It was on a big point at 15‑30. That's kind of a miracle shot. Then that kind of put the burn in the back of their mind, I think. Then it just opened up. We relaxed.

We call it getting the pickle out of the jar. You're working so hard, it kind of just breaks free. We loosened up and let our shots go. That's one of the best sets we've played in a long time, the third.:yeah:

It was a good match. It was high quality. Mark and Mahesh rose to the occasion and played some good tennis. Feel bad for them that they were so close. I feel it was a little luck, but it went our way. We started playing pretty good at the end.

Q. Did the match come quicker than you thought, because of the women's single?

MIKE BRYAN: That was a blowout. We've seen it a few times before. Played behind the women. A lot of time they're quick, yeah. I think we played after Henin and she pulled out. That was a quick one.

BOB BRYAN: Henin/Mauresmo. Then Serena and Sharapova.

MIKE BRYAN: Then the French Open, there was a French Open final where Henin beat someone just really bad.

BOB BRYAN: Clijsters.

MIKE BRYAN: We're surprised, but we're always ready. Yeah, we have a routine down where we shower, we're ready for anything.

Q. You've been around for a long time, had a lot of success, traveled. What kind of reaction do you find yourself getting coming back to these places? How is it different from the earlier years?

BOB BRYAN: I feel like our fan base is growing. We get a pretty warm reception down here. It feels good coming down here. It feels like a lot of people know us. When we're walking around, there's a lot of tennis fans out there. We're signing some autographs in the casino or whatever. It makes you feel good because tennis fans know who we are, but most people don't.

Yeah, we walk around Camarillo, our hometown, fine, not have to sign autographs, anything. Just nice to be recognized once or twice a day. Makes you feel good. I don't know.

Q. Go back to the casino part.

MIKE BRYAN: We stay at the Crown every year. It's a blast. Bob does a little bit of gambling. Not much.

BOB BRYAN: Just peanuts.

Q. You're not like Sampras.

BOB BRYAN: We don't gamble to make money. We're not trying to make money.

MIKE BRYAN: We don't go to The Mahogany Room. There's a Mahogany Room where the high‑limit guys go. Andy is up there going big swings. I played with my girlfriend. Cent slots.

BOB BRYAN: Two cent slots.

MIKE BRYAN: Trying to earn dinner, you know.

Q. Can you talk about the Olympic match might affect you in Davis Cup? And how do you not give Roger Federer too much respect?

MIKE BRYAN: When we were playing them, you watch them on TV so much, you're a little bit in awe and you're expecting them to hit the big shot, ace you on a big shot, just because we're huge fans of the guy. I'm always rooting for him. Can't believe some of the stuff he does.

We felt like we had to overplay in that match. We were a little bit nervous and sluggish. It felt like he was kind of just freezing us a few times. It doesn't happen very often where you kind of play a legend. It happened when I played Andre at the US Open in singles. I had posters in my room.

We're going to try to treat him like a normal human being. It's kind of nice being the underdog. Everyone said we were the heavy favorites playing those guys over at the Olympics. We probably were because they hadn't played much together. But this time the pressure's kind of released; they're the Olympic medalists.

Yeah, I mean, it's a really important match to us, for the U.S. I see that as kind of the swing point, 'cause I think Stan is going to have trouble breaking Andy and James on that quick court, but Roger's probably going to be Roger in singles.

Q. It's pretty hard for one guy to win three points.

BOB BRYAN: It is.

MIKE BRYAN: It is.

BOB BRYAN: It will be nice to keep those guys out there on the Saturday. I think Andy and James will enjoy watching Roger and Stan put in the work on the Saturday. They'll just be kicking back at the hotel or watching one set and getting that huge rest.

Like we see out here, it's hard to bounce back. The body needs time to recover and regenerate. If you're on the court pounding away, even if it's a doubles match, it's still mentally taxing and physically taxing.

Q. Do you think Rafa is going to have a hard time tomorrow?

BOB BRYAN: If anyone can pull it off, it's Rafa. If it was me, I'd be in a body bag right now.

Q. You're going into Miami as the defending champions. Can you talk about that, your feelings about that tournament.

MIKE BRYAN: We always try to peak for Miami. We consider that the next biggest tournament behind the slams. When everyone asks us what our favorite tournament is, we say this one and Miami.

We love staying right there on South Beach. It's just a great atmosphere. Fans come out. It feels like a prime time tournament. So we always try to play our best tennis there.

Yeah, it's great we're defending champions. We've always wanted to be on that player board. We finally got it the last couple years. Then they took it out of the locker room. Hopefully they put it back.

But, yeah, definitely that's one of our favorite tournaments. We love coming to Miami.

Q. Did you say you were going out with Serena?

MIKE BRYAN: Yeah.

BOB BRYAN: We went two years ago. We've been seeing each other at the courts these two weeks. We just said, Let's do a repeat of two years ago. She won the singles, we won the doubles, then we all went out in the club until the wee morning of Sunday.

Q. Is that club still here?

BOB BRYAN: Same club. Right across the street from the hotel.

MIKE BRYAN: All I know is Serena usually picks up the bill.

Q. She didn't beat you guys when you were 10?:spit:

BOB BRYAN: No.

MIKE BRYAN: We knew her. They grew up in Southern California. They came up to our club.

No, we were always just way older. I know she said she beat Andy.

Q. Could you talk about the challenges of the new drug testing regime.

BOB BRYAN: Yeah, it's pretty strict. We got tested a few times when we were home. The tough thing is you got to be worried to go to breakfast at 8 in the morning. You got to wait it out and stay until 9. If you're clear, you can go eat breakfast. You always got to kind of be on‑call. I guess it's the responsibility of a professional athlete.

It's a little bit brutal. They can't call you. I guess that's the rule now. We have one or two missed tests, so we got to be really aware of what we're doing and make sure.

MIKE BRYAN: Yeah, you got to communicate with whoever it is, the ITF, where you're going to be at all times. They even want to know when you're flying in, the day you arrive, if you're going to be at the hotel for an hour.

We missed a couple. Just weren't thinking. Just down in L.A. One time I got a flat tire. But, yeah, you just got to be ready for anything.

Q. They just knock on the door?

MIKE BRYAN: Yeah, they just knock on the door.

BOB BRYAN: Knock on the door. If you're not there... They used to call you, and you have one hour. That's usually enough time to get to the house. But now they don't call you.

Mike missed a test. He was just at breakfast. Just had an extra long breakfast.

MIKE BRYAN: Every time we're home, they're usually there, one of the days. I think we got tested 15 to 20 times last year. It's either USADA or the ITF. Yeah, you just got to be home.

Q. Can you not miss another test?

MIKE BRYAN: I think I have ‑‑ April ‑‑

BOB BRYAN: Until April he's got to be clean.

MIKE BRYAN: But I'm sure I can appeal because this body doesn't look like a 'roided‑out body.:o:lol:

Q. Rafa described it in Spanish as intolerable harassment, and Roger says it's a necessary evil. Where do you come down on that?

BOB BRYAN: I don't know. I think once someone gets banned for missing a few tests, then you hear the stories and they're kind of ridiculous stories, then I think we'll probably have a problem with it. If it's one of our friends that goes out, if Mike gets banned...

MIKE BRYAN: I think it has to be done, though. It's fair across the board. You don't want doping in tennis. The fans definitely don't want anyone playing that's ‑‑

BOB BRYAN: ‑‑ cheating.

MIKE BRYAN: It's good. I think we just got to get used to the strictness.

BOB BRYAN: The strictness.

Q. Was it really a flat tire?

MIKE BRYAN: I missed a couple. One of them, I think I got a flat tire. I was trying to make my way back up from L.A. One I decided to take my girlfriend to San Francisco for a day. I wasn't thinking. I didn't call my agent or the ITF.

Q. Nestor and Zimonjic got beaten in the second round. Were you surprised?

BOB BRYAN: Yeah. They've been a tough team for the last year. They're probably our biggest rivals right now in the sport. We played them six times in six finals in 12 months, so yeah. We weren't disappointed to see them lose. Obviously it opens the draw up a little bit.

We played Knowles and Bhupathi today, who we respect. I wasn't nervous before this final because I knew we had to play our best tennis. You can't just go out there and play safe against a team like that.

Yeah, I mean, I wish Daniel and Nenad the best. They're both at home with their families, their new babies, and they're having fun off the court.

Q. Do you feel targeted by the drug testing or is it everyone?

BOB BRYAN: It's everyone.

MIKE BRYAN: They're not coming after any one individual player. I'm pretty sure it's fair across the board.

Q. Where would you rate the Polish players, Matkowski and Kubot?

MIKE BRYAN: I consider them a top five team. They're getting better every year. They're really powerful, a dangerous team. Big shots.

BOB BRYAN: Kubot and Marach, we respect them, too. They had us on the ropes at the French Open a couple years ago. We scraped out of that one. Yeah, they're dangerous, as well.

Remember last year? they made what, 4-5 finals and lost them all til a few months into the year? This year they're undefeated so far  Should be a great year if they can stay healthy and keep this up :D

Took me forever too forget the heartbreakin loss in the QF last year in Melbourne to Knowles & Bhupathi:mad:....
I had Mike & Bob all set to add to the Grandslam Silverwear like most would have though as well,

The boys sure have had a great start to the 2009 season;), Two Titles, Two wins over Knowles & Bhupathi already in 2009;) Teams need that great start to kick-start the year & it keeps going & they carry it through most of the season.... So great hopes for 2009 indeed

If the boys keep fit & Injury free, Have great expectations of them returning back to the best team on the tour, & adding more Grandslam Silverwear shouldn't be a problem for the boys!;):yeah:....

oh man the twins just won an insane match over Lipsky/Martin 7-6 3-6 12-10, Lipsky/Martin served for the first at 5-4 and the twins played two UNREAL points that helped them break back, and they were down a minibreak. Also they were down a minibreak a few times in the superTB. The twins really did not play very well, especially didn't return too well, hopefully they can play better.

Good to see the boys break through for a win at Delray Beach:bigclap::woohoo:..... Another milestone in the Bryan Brothers Resume:);) I'm sure they will be over the moon that they finally have won in Delray Beach at long last

even thought the boys won today, still think they are way off the form from a few years ago
My thoughts on this.... think since the new format with the Super TB system..... If it gets down to a Super TB Its more about luck or having the courage to let a few rip & open the Super TB up for you

When it was under the old way the boys seemed to have more easier matches & not having the lucky escapes that you see all the time these days... It's taken away the brilliant play factor & turned it into a more even contest that one lucky shot can seal your fate!

Just my little look at things......

Hmmm, well, I'd say the super tie break thing might have changed things a bit... I mean, I don't really think the twins aren't showing the same form as before. Because, really, if you take a look you will see 1) they have always been in the top positions in the ranking 2) they are always winning titles 3) playing and beating the best doubles teams and players out there. Thing is: nowdays there are a lot of doubles specialists and a lot more good doubles teams than maybe some years ago, where they could easily beat the guys who'd just play for fun or whatever. In my opinion it's really great they've been on tour for years and years and always doing great, even when they have to deal with injuries, etc. :D

Hey I agree that they are still such a formidable duo & anyone would be nervous about seeing them slotted into the draw against Mike & Bob.... You have to back there chances most weeks to be around at the business end each week
It's great that they are still winning titles & majors after all this time, They will be remembered when the curtain finally comes down on there Illustrious career (Hope It's not anytime soon) as one of the greatest teams of the modern era.

The doubles part of the game has changed with so many now turning into Doubles Specialists so they can make a decent income from the tour, & not the scratch combinations like days gone by....
The only thing I miss about doubles these days are the lack of main draw Singles contenders also playing doubles & the almost non playing of doubles by players who want to go deep in the draw at slams or the old Masters Series Events

But it's worked in the favour of Mike & Bob & sure even if the big names of the Singles Tour were in the doubles draw Mike & Bob would still be pushed to be beaten most times they hit the court

Maybe Im just an old or living in the past:confused::D.... as they say you need to move with the times..... & change can only be good in the long run for the game

Bob's blogging for the tourney site:

March 19, 2009 - Bob Bryan

Hello Tennis Fans,

I’ve been asked to write a short blog during the last few days of the BNP Paribas Open. I just wanted to start by saying that it’s been an excellent tournament so far.

The weather has been fantastic. It’s been nice and sunny during the day and it cools some off at night, but more importantly, the winds have stayed away which is great for the tennis.

Mike and I really love coming to Indian Wells to play in this event. For the last few years, doubles gets more interest than usual because many of the top singles players like Federer and Nadal use this tournament to play doubles.

Besides Federer and Nadal, players like Del Potro, Nalbandian, Gonzalez, Gasquet, Monfils, Robredo, Fish and Roddick all entered the doubles this year. It was great to see such a strong doubles draw and it really pumped Mike and me up. It’s also great for the fans, who have the opportunity to watch great doubles.

Many of the players really enjoy playing here and one of the reasons why, are the fans. They really come out and support the players and the tournament. The players greatly appreciate playing before a big crowd and you can feel the excitement. Without all of their support, it certainly wouldn’t be the same.

The stands were packed when we played Federer and Allegro in our first match. In our second match on Tuesday night, the fans really filled up Stadium 2 for our match against Nadal and Lopez. I would like to thank everyone who came out and not only supported us, but came to watch doubles. The atmosphere was amazing. We could feel the buzz.

It’s different playing doubles against the top singles players like Federer and Nadal, who will probably go down in history as two of the all-time great players. We really have a lot of respect for them. Mike and I have played against them many times,

In our matches against them, it takes us a little while to focus on the ball before we find our rhythm. When we play matches like this against the top players, we go into every match with a game plan. We’ve had to improve every year because the other guys have gotten better at playing doubles.

This year Mike and I made winning this tournament one of our goals. During our career, we’ve won each of the majors that make up the Grand Slam and we won the Davis Cup. We’ve also won every ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament except for, you guessed it, the BNP Paribas Open.

We’ve played this tournament every year since 1999 and we’ve come close to winning, but each time we’ve come up short. It’s always been something. Mike’s been sick a few times and once when we made the finals, we were up a set and a break and lost.

It’s been disappointing not only for us, but for friends and family who come and watch us. One thing is for sure, if we were to win this tournament it would be very, very satisfying.

That’s about all for today. If you’re at the tournament for the night session, Mike and I are playing the Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

Have a great day everyone.

Could anyone here please help me :D ?

Tight second set, if the scoreline is anything to go by, though they blasted them in the TB. Come on, Bob/Mike -- the title is so close!!

Speaking of mixed doubles, I would've loved to see Bob when he played with Venus at Wimbledon a few years ago. Wish they'd team up again. I'd be so amused if there ever was a Bob/Venus and Mike/Serena match-up.

If the Bryans are able to pull it out tonight, I'll be torn who I want to win tomorrow. :(

March 20, 2009 - Bob Bryan

Hello Again Everybody,

Mike and I are on a roll after last night. We got past the Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in straight sets, but it wasn’t easy. We’ve played them lots of times and we know their game. They really bring the heat and they serve big. We just chipped away during the match and we were able to break it open in the tiebreaker.

The crowd was great last night. When we play in the States, the fans really carry us and support us especially here in a tournament like the BNP Paribas Open. If you’re here in Indian Wells, Mike and I hope you’ll come to our next match which is tonight (Friday) in the second match of the night session in the main Stadium.

Speaking of our next match, we play Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in the semifinals. We expect an even tougher match against them.

They’re both tacitly:haha::haha::haha: sound. They know doubles well and they’re both big servers. Max probably has the biggest serve in doubles. He’s a very good athlete and has a very good volley. Andy, who has a tough service return, won the doubles title here last year with Jonathan Erlich. He knows what it takes to win here.

Mike and I have played against Max many, many times. We’ve beaten him and he’s beaten us. We actually have some history with Max at this tournament. Back in 2002 Max played with Roger (Federer) and they took us out in the quarterfinals.

Last year, he played with Jamie Murray and we lost in the quarterfinals in a close match tie-break.

It’s time to go now. We’re going to try and get a short practice in.

Wish us luck and we hope you get a chance to come and watch our match.

Keep serve and volleying.

Bob

Horrible serving from them. PLEASE, pick it up [in this second set]. I'm gonna go to bed and hopefully when I wake up... :o though I'm honestly not having that high of hopes...

Gutted, first Andy and now this.
I couldn't watch the match, but from the scoreboard it seemed like they were awful mentally, had a 4-2 lead in the 2nd and ended up losing it 4-6(In the final game, they served they saved 2 MP'S from 15-40 to 40 all but lost the deciding point).
Plus, they had plenty of missed chances in the 1st set, they saved 2 set points in the TB to get to 6-6 but then lost 2 points and lost the set.
I know they won Delray beach, but for me they haven't been playing the same since thier first loss of the season in San Jose.
They will lose like 600 points if I'm not wrong, but the gap will still be big enough and fortunately Zimonjic and Nestor are playing really bad this season.

Deboogle!.
04-02-2009, 06:50 PM
oh wow :o i didn't realize they had the lead in the 2nd, they also had a SP when they were up 6-5 and the other guys were serving at deuce. Jeez. You're right, something's definitely off mentally with them the past few tourneys. It's just so strange after starting the year so incredibly well.

Well, clay season starts today(vs Jeremy Chardy (FRA)/Brian Dabul (ARG)), the most boring time of the year in singles but the Bryans have decided to make it more interesting in doubles with that full schedule a la Nadal(Although I still have my doubts on how are they going to switch from Houston to Monte Carlo).
I guess all I can say is "Here's to a Healthy clay season" :)

BTW, I haven't introduced myself yet, and I'm doing it here because most of my posts would probably be in the Team USA forum anyway.
I'm Nicholas, I'm a fan of A-Rod, The Bryans, Dent, Querrey, Murray and basically I'll root for any American player out there.

I'm already thinking about Monte-Carlo, it's a bit weird that the tournament starts tomorrow and the twins are still in Houston.

Here's the draw:

[1] BRYAN, Bob (USA)/BRYAN, Mike (USA) vs BYE
[WC] COUILLARD, Guillaume (MON)/LISNARD, Jean-Rene (MON) vs MONFILS, Gael (FRA)/WAWRINKA, Stanislas (SUI)
CHARDY, Jeremy (FRA)/SIMON, Gilles (FRA) vs DAVYDENKO, Nikolay (RUS)/MARACH, Oliver (AUT)
BYE vs [6] FYRSTENBERG, Mariusz (POL)/MATKOWSKI, Marcin (POL)

[3] DLOUHY, Lukas (CZE)/PAES, Leander (IND) vs BYE
BERDYCH, Tomas (CZE)/CERMAK, Frantisek (CZE) vs MONTANES, Albert (ESP)/ROBREDO, Tommy (ESP)
LINDSTEDT, Robert (SWE)/SODERLING, Robin (SWE) vs ASPELIN, Simon (SWE)/MOODIE, Wesley (RSA)
BYE vs [7] KNOWLE, Julian (AUT)/RAM, Andy (ISR)

[8] COETZEE, Jeff (RSA)/KERR, Jordan (AUS) vs BYE
MELO, Marcelo (BRA)/SA, Andre (BRA) vs DJOKOVIC, Novak (SRB)/TROICKI, Viktor (SRB)
LOPEZ, Feliciano (ESP)/VERDASCO, Fernando (ESP) vs ANDREEV, Igor (RUS)/SAFIN, Marat (RUS)
BYE vs [4] BHUPATHI, Mahesh (IND)/KNOWLES, Mark (BAH)

[5] SOARES, Bruno (BRA)/ULLYETT, Kevin (ZIM) vs BYE
ALMAGRO, Nicolas (ESP)/FERRER, David (ESP) vs CILIC, Marin (CRO)/KIEFER, Nicolas (GER)
[WC] GICQUEL, Marc (FRA)/MATHIEU, Paul-Henri (FRA) vs ARNOLD KER, Lucas (ARG)/CUEVAS, Pablo (URU)
BYE vs [2] NESTOR, Daniel (CAN)/ZIMONJIC, Nenad (SRB)

Monfils/Wawrinka could be really dangerous on clay, pretty harsh for 2nd round.

Except from Blake/Fish nobody has challenged them in Houston, but a title is a title.
And it's OK to be challenged by Blake/Fish, after all, Mardy is half of the greatest doubles team to ever play the game... :)

I hope they defend their title or else that #1 spot could be in danger.
I'm a bit worried of Mirnyi/Ram in the Quarterfinals and that Indian Wells loss doesn't make me more confident, but I guess it's a different game on clay and of course Mirnyi and Ram have lost some of their momentum.

Happy Birthday Bryans!31 already

What a horrendous start to the match, I hope they are not going to lose again :o
