Just got back from Kooyong, Federer played well for an easy first match down under. going back to see him against Verdasco tomorrow, so he's going to have to kick it up a gear, Verdasco is a tougher customer than poor old Moya. ;)

Just wanted to say Good Luck to Roger for the final of Kooyong tomorrow (not that he really needs it:worship:). Theres been alot of talk about Roger being past his golden days on Aus tv, but i dont for 1 minute believe it! Anyone who wins a grand slam and reaches the finals in 2 others is nowhere near the twilight of their career.

I wouldn't have cared if Federer lost his No 2 spot. Djokovic had a chance to really earn the No 2 ranking last week, but he lost the first match of the year and had to ask to play an extra tournament in Sydney. Well, if you got your ranking up by playing an extra tournament, so be it. It won't last anyway. In any case, he lost somewhat bizarrely. But Roger must not be lulled into a sense of false security. He must fight his way through the draw no matter how easy or hard it is. At the end of the day, there is no such thing as a cakewalk.

And dunno why there are so many people writing Roger off already, he's performed the best so far out of the top 3. The only person who's had a better start to their year than Rog is Murray, and ah - we'll deal with him another day. :devil:

As for the semi against Nieminen, I wouldn't read too much into it yet, it could be that Djokovic is not in great form but it could also be that he just wanted to get over the Melbourne to start preparing for the defence of his AO title.

I don't think Roger's draw at the AO is much worse compared to the other top four. If Roger's playing well, he should be ok until the semi and if he's not playing well, the draw will not really matter as Roger showed last year that he quite capable of losing to the most unlikely players:o

I have only been watching tennis recently. The three attempts I'm thinking of are his tanking against Tsonga at TMC, his first round loss at Brisbane, and his defeat to Nieminen.

I didn't really count the defeat against Tsonga at TMC as at the time he wasn't assured the #2 spot if he won that match same with his first round match in Brisbane, with both of those he would have been dependant on Roger's result as well.

I was actually thinking of the two semis he played against Nadal last year in Hamburg and RG as those like the semi in Sydney would have given him the #2 spot regardless of any other results. But I'll stop spamming Roger's AO cheering thread with off-topic discussions now:p

I am watching Kooyong now and Roger looks pretty thin. Does anyone else feel that way or am I imagining things?

It's nothing new that people over there get over the top sometimes when their favourite player is in excellent form ;) We had the Nalbandian hype, Djokovic hype, Nadal hype and now it's Murray's time and it doesn't really help that the British media is pushing him so much.

What's wrong when Nadal fans keep believing their favourite player can win a hard court slam? He's been in the SF of the AO and USO last year and won the Olympics on a quick surface.

Unfortunately the players field in Kooyong wasn't as strong as in the last years this time, but Roger was able to get a good week of practice there.
I haven't been able to follow any of his matches, but it sounds as he played a convincing final against Stan. Let's hope he can carry his good spirit of the week over to the AO :)

We should take match round by round, just as Roger does. The best of 5 rhythm should suit his game.

They changed the Rod Laver court entirely before 2008 Aussie Open. I am not so sure about other courts.
