Dangerous floaters for AO 2009

the classic thread + this time a poll included for fun

floater = player who won't be seeded, but could make the second week (4th round/quarterfinals), take out a seeded player and have an impact beyond his ranking. Or a player that no seeded one wants to meet in the 1st round.

Schwank,Kiefer,Darcis and Nishikori colud make 2 week
i think kiefer's chances to play are <10%, as he suffered a torn ligament in his right foot (again).

Gulbis, Nishikori and maybe Haas if he brings his AO form.

Hewitt.

Don't think anyone would like to play him in a night match on Rod laver in the first round.

GlennMirnyi
01-10-2009, 07:05 PM
Exactly. Hewitt.

The others aren't that scary.

Hewitt can beat pretty much anyone from the top 30 in a 5 set-match, except for the top 5 I think.

Definitely Lleyton on a paper, but still haven't seen him play after hip surgery so I am not sure how ready he will be. It will be clearer after Sydney. Some of those guys there can produce a 1st round upsets (there are few seeds that are in bad shape lately) but I can't see many of them reaching 2nd week.

Haas did always fine here; if he's healthy and has no very tough draw he should do so again in 2009

Hewitt and Gulbis have chances as well, I don't see much possibilities for the others mentioned in the poll

the draw should help me in deciding for one out of this trio (or somebody else) whom I consider most dangerous

it has to be hewitt. even though he won't have a chance againt the top 4, he might be dangerous for the other seeds

Tipsarević, Gulbis and Hewitt.

Nishikori is not quite ready I think...and the rest of the poll options are in mug form.

Janko :rocker2: He can beat nearly anyone on a good day.

doubt he will do it tough with his 5 set matches( wins 3-2 with comeback form 0-2 down) with Berlocq and Coria....so his tank will be half empty when meet serious opposition

Hewitt maybe, and Ancic.

Anyone on that list is potentially dangerous, but they would be my worst nightmare in R1.

Gulbis likes the slams, and Nishikori - time for him to step up.

Haas - when many crossed him out he made an epic run at the USO, so with this one you never know.

The other ones, Ancic, Tipsarevic, Cilic - any of them can.

Players like Ferrero, Baghdatis or Hewitt are out of shape. Adding to that, Hewitt even in shape had some idiotic losses at home slam.

Malisse to surprise us? :D

malisha
01-11-2009, 01:41 AM
after i saw Nando PHM i can understand how Ancic was beaten like that if Nando was playing that match with same intensity and power...but it doesnt look to good for Ancic..he was sharp in his first Tournament last year in France...now in Australia he cant hit a flat groundstroke winner properly

I don't see Hewitt posing much of a threat to any of the seeds actually.

Labamba

Ancic and Hewitt have scored a couple of decent wins this week in Sydney.

Nieminen also made the Sydney QF and looks to be in good shape.

Exactly. Hewitt.

The others aren't that scary.

Hewitt can beat pretty much anyone from the top 30 in a 5 set-match, except for the top 5 I think.

Lleyton has so much experience that he can be very dangerous. It all depends on how his body holds up.

Gulbis will go far as well.

Månu

One could add Chardy as well, he's just beaten Andreev

I would have said Nishikori instead of Tipsarevic but it seems he has a problem with his arm.

(btw, Monfils, Fish, Cilic are seeded)

Hewitt cant play well in the AO :p except for that fluke year the surface was made for him..

Gulbis IMO is the one to be careful of..

took out Djokovic and a 3 setter with Del Potro proves the guy can pretty much do well if he wants to

Why is Gulbis being mentioned as a'dangerous floater'?????:o He very rarely advances past 2nd round in tournaments:o:o

My dangerous floater tips are Ancic and Hewitt;)

Ancic, Tipsarevic, Gulbis, Hewitt pose a threat.
Verdasco could go far. He's seeded, but no one expect him to do anything. That greasy bastard will want to prove himself to Ana.

Labamba
01-15-2009, 07:26 PM
Querrey could also be a threat to some of the seeds.

We will know more when the draw comes out in a couple of hours...
