Is it me or do lefty two-handed backhands always look uglier than righty ones?

I mean, seriously. Has any lefty possessed a two-handed backhand that can compare in beauty and style to the likes of a Safin two-hander, or a Davenport two-hander? I mean, Nadal's is supremely effective and wins him lots of points from aggressive and defensive positions. But it doesn't look as beautiful as some of the best righty backhands in the history of the sport.

Maybe I'm being a subjective righty, I don't know.

Style is irrelevant, it's about the W and L, and the effectiveness.

Rios, Koubek, Nieminens backhands aren't ugly, then again Roddick and Moya's backhands are the epitome of beauty.

there's probably about 5 or 6 lefty 2 handers in the top 100. It's a matter of probability that you won't find one to rival what you consider the most beatiful in the game.

Style hardly matters.

Style hardly matters.

I don't agree. Don't fans support players whose styles of play they like? The aesthetics of a player's game matter to me. I don't just cheer for results. But yes, for the player, it's W/L that matters most.

I'll buy Rios' lefty two-handed backhand, maybe... but not Koubek or Nieminen's. I agree with Henry. There are barely any lefties in the game, so it's hard to find one with a backhand stylistically and aesthetically comparable to those beautiful two-handers we know and worship so well. ;)

I don't find right two-handed backhands prettier than left-handed ones, really.

there are hardly any right-handers out there whose two-handed backhands look nice either. most of them get the job done and only some actually "look" okay to me, like nalbandian's for example. nothing rivals single-handed backhands. everything else is shades of ugliness.

Im a lefty two hander.

I don't really think that left 2HBH looks ugly.

Few doublehanders competes with his in terms of style. One who deserves a mention, though it's his overall style I'm in love with, comes here:

Good point!

When it comes to aesthetics, those assessments are in the eye of the beholder. But Connors' backhand certainly had deadly efficiency, which is beautiful in a certain sense.

Verdasco has beautiful swing on his lefty double handed backhand.

What's the point of threads this silly, we're already on season

 this silly thread is turning the hearts of the hordes of MTF Rafatards into a maremagnum of ill-feelings  Mods, please close this thread fast and move it to the Nieminen forum.

Nadal playing as a lefty makes everything ugly, nothing to do with left handers.

The season may have started, but frankly it's always boring until the AO. I'm trying to start a discussion about something other than Murray/Nadal/Federer/Djokovic/MUG ERA and the usual bullshit that fills up GM. But clearly as an Andy Murray fan, all you want to talk about is him?

I have noticed this in baseball too. Swings of talented righty hitters generally look less smooth than swings of talented lefty hitters. Ted Williams, bonds, David Justice, Will Clark, Dave Magadan are easier to watch than Pujols, McGuire, Ramirez, Gregg Jeffries. Maybe there is something similar in cricket as well?

A better way to think about it might be to compare switch hitters in baseball, guys who bat righty and lefty, IIRC chipper jones lefty swing is nicer to watch than his righty swing. The tennis equivalents are santoro and gambill. IIRC gambill's backhand was smoother than his forehand.

Not sure I have ever heard a decent explanation for it.

Dear original poster, I understand exactly what you are saying. I am not sure why, but for some reason, a left-handed player's game looks a little weird at times. I think it just has to do with the fact that it is "backwards" when compared to the way most people play.

Also, on a small TV, the left-handed double-handed backhand can look a little like a two-handed righty forehand, which is something I find ugly. Like, when I watch Monica Seles play on YouTube, the screen is so small. It looks like she just plays with two backhands.

So, I get what you are saying.
