Sydney Qualies: Xavier Malisse trumps Gabashvili, Mannarino and Luczak

Very big scoreline considering Gabashvili's form in 2008, considering this is his best surface and considering Malisse's rather flaky return to the Tour last season.

Maybe it'll signal a strong return by the Belgian in 2009.

Two excellent players. Tennis was the winner in this epic battle.

Btw nice to see Xavier back on the track.

Too early to say. Let him try to qualify first. He didn't succeed last week in Brisbane.

Subsequently crushed Mannarino, 6-3 6-1. Of course it's still in the early stages, but these are very convincing scorelines, especially over Gabashvili.

Good scorelines over both, but, to me, Gabashvili is a Poor Man's Tursunov, and isn't Mannarino struggling to find his feet after some sort of injury from the tail-end of last season?

Nevertheless, I hope this a sign that Malisse is getting back to the sort of level of play that can enable him to make a full-time return to ATP level.

Yes, Adrian had some injury problems, and was sick in the off-season from what I heard.

I also agree about the comment on Gaba, but I find both scorelines against players who know how to play on this surface pretty impressive.

If Malisse was out of shape, he could have lose to any of these. Instead, he demolished them. Good indicator, what else did you people expect, double bagels?

he played well at the belgian masters, easily won the tournament. his hair is coming back as well at least at the masters. He has the most potential of all Belgian players.

Luczak tomorrow, probably won't be as easy as Luczak had good wins today too.

Nice to hear. (Though I don't want to be disrespectful to either Gabashvili or Mannarino.) But Malisse is such a naturally gifted player, I've always found him a joy to watch. It's a pity that injuries and sometimes his mentality have let him down. Hopefully he can salvage something late on in his career.

still some people left who think he's the real deal as i can see.

awful player and part-timer with a career like a swiss cheese.

I never said that he is the real deal. I only wanted to emphasize that I like players who have more natural talent that the average. And I think he is one of them. I admit that he might not have been the best competitor, but that does not take anything away from the ease with which he used to play when he was in form.

Another convincing scoreline against Luczak, 6-2 6-4.

Now he meets Ancic.

He's playing pretty well against Ancic now... Won the first set 6-4. When Ancic was serving for the second set at 5-4 he broke back. It's 5-5 now. :)

So Xavier can go to Melbourne. Hopefully he can qualify for the main draw. :)

Good week for Xavier. Three impressive wins and a great scoreline against Ancic on hard. Looks set to do well in qualies.

Indeed a good week for him, he is one of the most gifted players on tour but unfortunately probably the laziest one.

Ancic isn't in the greatest shape at this stage in his career. I somehow feel Malisse in the form he showed in qualifying could have beaten Ancic. Of course he 'had to lose' if he wanted to play AO quallies, maybe he tanked a bit , wouldn't the first time it happened.

I remember Malisse player a cat and mouse game with Schuettler in Delray Beach at the time of round-robin in 2007, he knew he was through so he just clowned around.

Ohh, c'mon you are not serious , are you?

You are saying that proffesional tennis player who is struggling to come back at the highest level, will tank a match(winning first set ) in which he could possibly take 20+ points (moving him up on the list for around 50 places) just to play to qualies at a Slam?
No believe me, he'll take 40 points , even if that means that he will miss the qualies.
In the position X now is, the 20 points are very important.

Malisse :timebomb: after he lost the second set, he went from ripping winners from all over the court to making stupid unforced errors.

Ancic didn't play well at all in the first set - he only warmed up about 10 minutes before the match started, I was at the practice court and saw him run in. He probably didn't expect the Safina match to finish to quickly or was running late for whatever other reason.
