YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I am shocked and stoked all at the same time. Never would have thought he could do this yet on the circuit. Must have developed something in the off season. And thank god he did not fold after beating Moya!

Yay Somdev! I knew he could pull it off! Crowd was definitely behind him and probably made Ivo nervous, still such a big win. Wonder where this puts him ranking wise

Dev should be Top 50 player at the end of this season.

Still yet to see him, but this is probably his best win to date, so well done!

However, it is a little easy to go overboard...Kim isn't a particularly great player, Moya is a little washed-up these days, and Karlovic can be unpredictable. But, to his credit, the latter two have a wealth of experience over him...

from what I saw of it Dev was mostly pushing from way behind the the baseline though he was able to mix things up by slicing a few backhands which produced a hell of a lot of ue's from Ivo's forehand.

Ivo played like absolute shit. Let Devvarman escape 0-30 twice when he had control of points, missed a ton of easy shots in the tb, and should never have come close to being broken in that last game :o Dreadful stuff

Hmmmm not so sure. He really needs to develop a weapon and a better serve. At least from what I saw on my tv screen a few times:p And these matches were during his college days.

Good win by dealing with the big man's serve.

Hopefully he developed some more muscle in the off season so he can get a weopen to hurt an ATP player.

Don't need to exaggerate :p Dev was playing successfully a lot on the hard courts in college, he might take an advantage of it because the season is constructed this way he can play almost all year there. I suppose in the clay court season he'll choose some hardcourt Challengers to improve the ranking. Anyway I won't be surprised if he reaches 3rd round in Roland Garros.... last year on clay he lost only 5-7 in the third against Almagro. The guy has a talent and good mentality.

I suppose he said about American or Indian clay courts because in Europe as a senior he played on clay only in Romania :) No doubts that in serious tennis only European clay-courts are important.

Impressive win Somdev :yeah:
Not really surprising to me, though. People who don't think he will reach the top-100 don't know him well enough. His mental toughness is off the charts.

well he did give Almagro a tough 3 setter losing 7-5 in the 3rd there in fairness so he might have a fondness for Euro clay. Depends on his ranking come clay season I guess.

Ivo wasn't at his usual level, but to lose from the player ranking 200 and something?
Credit to indian guy, it was nice to see the joy on the faces of the crowd.

yea...agree

Somdev is fast and his groundies are constant...he can catch good angels with his serve but no real power in it or in his strokes..his BH wing is constant..but lack power and depth...he hits looping shots with his FH sometimes and will be punished against a top player...i must admit..was a bit dissapointed with his overall game

he is a fighter though..Karlo made some FH UE(in TB expecially) but i can easily see him beating many top 100 players with his todays performance..so credit to Somdev

Pretty surprising run for Devvarman. Chennai is definitely a tournament where such runs can happen though. But this is a definite confidence boost after that disappointing ending of the season. Still would not be surprised if he failed to qualify for the AO though.

dont agree karlo played so bad..yea he was not on his regular level..but Somdev is awful matchup for him...he is damn fast and on 0-30 twice he didnt made mistakes which you wolud expect from unexperienced player..he anticipated well..and his looping shots worked well today..got himself from trouble by hard labour out there..i say again Karlo wolud beat many players today..but not Somdev

So this guy might have potential? One to watch in the future.
Beating both Moya and Karlovic makes me feel a bit better about Moya losing ... at least Carlos got one set off him.

top 50 is a more than reasonable target in my opinion... dev has a blind faith in his ability... can already see that he is one of those guys who wont let a bad run of form get to him....

A lot of players can beat Karlovic as long as they protect their serve properly. I'll remain sceptical until he beats someone with solid groundstrokes and fitness.

Agree with Sue. Too early to tell, though I'm pretty assured of him getting to top hundred if he carries on with such confidence. Hopefully once he gets there, he'll get some proper coach and team who improve his serve and rest of his game, and REDUCE THE MOONBALLING before entering top 50 if he does!

He looks less than 18 though: Babyface:p

Last year he bagan to collect ATP points in June. At the beginning of January '08 he won Futures in USA (so already gained much more points in Chennai) and didn't play pro tournaments in the next 6 months what means that starting right after Chennai until June '09 actually he has nothing to defend and is obligated only to climb in the ATP rankings.
I've seen him only once (against Karlovic) but his results + that match tell me a lot about him. I'm careful into tennis' nuances and I noticed the details in his mental attitude what are characteristic for amazing tennis fighters, that niuances what allow to win matches 7-5 in the fifth instead of losing in the reverse scoreline. Therefore I'm not surprised he survived tight match against Moya.

Yes, he looks younger than all Top 100 players who are 2-3 years younger :)

Do you know whatever about his religious status? I'm asking because of his Dev suffix and prefix

Religious status meaning what? I am guessing he's a Hindu by birth. Somdev means "lord of the moon" . It's pretty common name and nothing to do with his beliefs as such. Devvarman is a common last name for people from the North eastern states in India.

Edited: for better description

What's his religious declaration :) I know that "dev" is strongly connected with Hinduism and means "god", "divine" or something like this.

And that is key when playing Cilic!
Pros: mental fortitude
tough competitor
good return of serve
fast

Cons: small stature-height and weight
moonballs too much but steady defense
fair serve
