Doha QF: Federer thumbs Kohli 6-2 7-6(6)

Federer was in total domination first set but Kohli threw everything he had against Fed in the second but still couldn't convert one of his 3 set points.

Match stats:
Federer
72% serve, 4 aces 24 winners 24 UE's
Kohlschreiber
73% serve, 1 ace 20 winners 25 UE's

Great, Fed! Kohli played very well in the TB, but still not enough... Fed for the TITLE

huge slump from fed through the sedond part of the 2nd set, but he played perfect tennis at the end of the tie-break!

Pretty shit 2nd set from Fed, 4-1 up, then gets broken back and goes to a tiebreak, with kohli at one point 5-1 and 6-3 in the tb, fed played good to win that, champions mentality.

i really would have love to see a third set. kohli was finally playing well after walking out on court as if he were still asleep. oh well...very formidable stuff from Fed. Lapses here and there but overall good match from him.

Oh fuck yeah, great match. What a second set from Philipp. Impressive to see Federer turning the tiebreak around in such fashion too.

It is clear to me that Federer lost concentration in second set (and he thought he was going to coast to victory). Then his game fell apart when Kholi started playing well...

Real big dive for Fed in second set.

However the TB was very exciting..

Fed's serve has improved marginally from last time, his backhand is "normal". Forehand leaking some "snap". Concentration issues once again.

Only managed to watch from 5-1 Kohli in the TB, but Fed looked pretty awesome. Match point was

Actually very good. Roger seems to fuck up TB's lately but this one was mentally very strong.

IMO federer fell asleep during the second set.

He was doing some nonsense basic errors, short balls, passes that wern't working... Come 6-3 down in the tiebreak, he went back to basics.

He had one poor service game and that allowed Kohli to get back into the second set. The latter part of that second set Philipp indeed played very well. I know everyone wants perfection from Roger. Compare to last season though, this was an improvement. He found ways to stop the bleeding and amended for his mistakes.

I wouldn't say Fed DOMINATED the first set, 6-2 flattered him. Great match though, fantastic tennis from both players and a gripping tie-break and climax. :-) It was good to see a high seed tested finally as I missed Nadal-Monfils. :-(

I don't necessarily demand perfection. It'd be satisfactory if Roger were able to at least focus on the task at hand -- too often he's shown himself to be susceptible to concentration lapses. This alone in itself is not reason for concern.

However, he's making life tougher for himself by creating this Safinesque aura, which essentially increases the likelihood of opponents chasing down ball after ball, and making a reasonable effort to hold serve, in hopes of eventually benefiting from a few errors.

It's been quite some time since I've seen Roger overwhelm or demoralize an adversary -- U.S. Open final included, which had more to do with two factors: 1). A vintage performance on Roger's part; 2). Inexperience on Murray's part. There was never any point in the match when one got the impression that Murray was feeling overwhelmed. I just sensed confusion and panic, which more than anything, was self-imposed.

Yes, I'm serious talking about his ATP/DC matches, maybe he won somewhere in Challenger being 1:5 down but he hadn't too many occasions there. In ATP he won a tie-break from 2:6 down (S.Draper) and 0:4 down (Grosjean). Looks like the first time from 1:5 down, from 2:5 down he has won many tie-breaks.

I agree to some degree. I want to see more Fed Games again were he doesn't have any lapses and just crashes the opponent.

I understand what you are saying. I remember last time these two played each other, I felt Kohlschreiber was holding back somewhat. Maybe because he had so much deference for Roger on grass. Today, if Roger still had his aura of impeccability, maybe Philipp would have rolled over and accepted defeat.

It will take time for Roger to impose on his opponents mentally like he once did. These lapses in concentration like in today's match certainly don't help. It takes seconds to destroy a reputation and years to build it back up. We'll just have to wait and see.

That's true. Federer is at the moment the best tie-breaker in history of tennis. He's lost 132 tie-breaks so far (won 247) but only one of them 0-7... against Pescariu in Ljubljana (Challenger) ten years ago :)

So basically Rog does the old "I'll try to coast in the 2nd set" and barely squeaks it out. 2009 is going to be a long bad year. And yes, Muzza will drub him 6-2, 6-4 tomorrow.

I only started following the match when Kohlschreiber had the rebreak chances in the 2nd. It's always nice to see someone actually trying to play even more agressive than Federer. Those past few months I saw too many matches of him playing against more passive players. Anyways, such a shame that Kohli didn't manage to win that 2nd set. That must have hurt.

It's true, he was very aggressive at the start of set 1, and the end of set 2 and tiebreak. Kohli really is a talented player, and seems to be intelligent too.

It was very fun to watch. Infact, all the more impressive that Federer won the tiebreak pretty much by changing tactics in the end.

Well consulting wikipedia there seems to be some confusion about whether Arnie is a T-101 or a T-800 (and why exactly am I so concerned about this?), but Robert Patrick was the T-1000. One day such a figure will arise on MTF, with an even greater knowledge of tight tiebreaks and ace tallies than Voo, and the two will do battle in spectacular CGI fashion with the latter prevailing.

Kohli is a player I really appreciate and there's a long time I'm waiting for his arrival within the best players.
Yesterday, he made an amazing second set and he would have deserved to win this set but...he must be asking himself "how the hell did I completly lost this tie break ?!"
The answer is Roger really wanted it and he made awesome winners. In a way, I'm completly desperate about this new habit Roger has to freak all his supporters but, well, he doesn't give up, on the contrary !..
Hope he won't lose again against Murray today...Roger, don't do it again, pleeeeaaaase !
